By Carlos Pavesio. 2017
This book offers a concise but comprehensive overview of scleritis, with up-to-date information on all aspects, including diagnosis and treatment.…
Fundamental features of the pathogenesis of scleral inflammation are first discussed as a basis for understanding the therapeutic strategies. Detailed descriptions are then provided of clinical manifestations, the complications that can arise during the course of the disease process, and the best way to manage them. An individual chapter is devoted to infectious scleritis and its management, this being an uncommon but serious condition that may result not only in loss of vision but also in loss of the globe itself. The diagnostic approach to and various management options for scleritis are then discussed extensively, with coverage of local and systemic therapy and new strategies, including biologics. Apart from the potential impact on vision, inflammation of the sclera carries a risk of association with systemic diseases, some of which can prove fatal if not promptly recognized and managed. This book is designed to allow ophthalmologists to easily identify the condition and the signs indicative of a more severe problem. It will thereby assist in safe and effective management, and help in preserving vision and life.Studies on Binocular Vision
By Dominique Raynaud. 2017
This book clarifies the interrelationship between optics, vision and perspective before the Classical Age, examining binocularity in particular. The author…
shows how binocular vision was one of the key juncture points between the three concepts and readers will see how important it is to understand the approach that scholars once took. In the Middle Ages and the Renaissance, the concept of Perspectiva - the Latin word for optics - encompassed many areas of enquiry that had been viewed since antiquity as interconnected, but which afterwards were separated: optics was incorporated into the field of physics (i. e. , physical and geometrical optics), vision came to be regarded as the sum of various psycho-physiological mechanisms involved in the way the eye operates (i. e. , physiological optics and psychology of vision) and the word 'perspective' was reserved for the mathematical representation of the external world (i. e. , linear perspective). The author shows how this division, which emerged as a result of the spread of the sciences in classical Europe, turns out to be an anachronism if we confront certain facts from the immediately preceding periods. It is essential to take into account the way medieval scholars posed the problem - which included all facets of the Latin word perspectiva - when exploring the events of this period. This book will appeal to a broad readership, from philosophers and historians of science, to those working in geometry, optics, ophthalmology and architecture.Keratoconus
By Jorge L. Alió. 2017
As a degenerative disorder of the eye, keratoconus can cause substantial distortion of vision, with multiple images, streaking, and sensitivity…
to light all reported by patients. Keratoconus: Recent Advances in Diagnosis and Treatment updates ophthalmologists about the innovations that have occurred within the last decade, discussing the diagnostic imaging techniques that have been developed for keratoconus diagnosis, understanding of how examination techniques are related to the evolution of keratoconus, and how to indicate the different therapeutic tools that have been created for keratoconus over the last several years. Additionally, fundamentals for new diagnostic elements, based on the mathematical, physical and biomechanical data are analyzed in depth for a better understanding of the essential diagnostic steps for the clinician to guide patients towards the most adequate therapeutic tool in the case. Modern keratoplasty techniques, assisted by femtosecond lasers or other devices, are also covered and these techniques, along with the emerging conservative treatments, have added to more precise control of the evolution of the disease. The Infected Eye

This book discusses the diagnosis and treatment of common ocular infections with the aim of clearly explaining current recommended clinical…
practice in order to aid physicians involved in the care of patients. Relevant pathological principles are described to provide a basis for the understanding of these disorders. The epidemiology of infection as a class of ocular disease and the pathological effects of infectious processes in tissue are discussed in an introductory section. These fundamentals are explained and reinforced with tables and selected illustrations of tissue pathology. Leading clinical specialists then describe the diagnosis and treatment of infections of the conjunctiva, cornea, intraocular tissues, orbit, eyelids, and ocular adnexa as they present in adults and children. Illustrative tables and algorithms enhance the discussion, making key principles accessible to the busy clinician. The book contains useful appendices that summarize relevant microbiological techniques, recommendations for specimen collection and transport, and current principles for the appropriate use of antibiotics.Uveitis

specialists, practicing ophthalmologists, and ophthalmology residents with the appropriate diagnostic testing and evidenced-based therapeutic options for managing patients afflicted with these conditions. The realm of ocular inflammatory diseases is constantly changing with improved diagnostic modalities and treatment options, however, despite these innovations, the ocular inflammatory diseases, including uveitis, are the third leading cause of blindness worldwide. Written and edited by leaders in the fields of ophthalmology, rheumatology, internal medicine, infectious disease, and oncology, Uveitis addresses the latest advances in the field, from the advent of PCR technology, intraocular depot steroid implants, neoplastic and infectious diseases masquerading as uveitis, and the use of systemic immunomoduatory therapies (including biologic agents/humanized monoclonal antibodies in the armamentarium).Making Eye Health a Population Health Imperative: Vision for Tomorrow
By National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, Medicine. 2016
The ability to see deeply affects how human beings perceive and interpret the world around them. For most people, eyesight…
is part of everyday communication, social activities, educational and professional pursuits, the care of others, and the maintenance of personal health, independence, and mobility. Functioning eyes and vision system can reduce an adult’s risk of chronic health conditions, death, falls and injuries, social isolation, depression, and other psychological problems. In children, properly maintained eye and vision health contributes to a child’s social development, academic achievement, and better health across the lifespan. The public generally recognizes its reliance on sight and fears its loss, but emphasis on eye and vision health, in general, has not been integrated into daily life to the same extent as other health promotion activities, such as teeth brushing; hand washing; physical and mental exercise; and various injury prevention behaviors. A larger population health approach is needed to engage a wide range of stakeholders in coordinated efforts that can sustain the scope of behavior change. The shaping of socioeconomic environments can eventually lead to new social norms that promote eye and vision health. Making Eye Health a Population Health Imperative: Vision for Tomorrow proposes a new population-centered framework to guide action and coordination among various, and sometimes competing, stakeholders in pursuit of improved eye and vision health and health equity in the United States. Building on the momentum of previous public health efforts, this report also introduces a model for action that highlights different levels of prevention activities across a range of stakeholders and provides specific examples of how population health strategies can be translated into cohesive areas for action at federal, state, and local levels.A Practical Manual of Diabetic Retinopathy Management

By J. Sebag. 2014
The vitreous body long has been the most mysterious of all ocular structures, owing perhaps to its seeming simplicity. There…
have been few concerted, sustained efforts to unravel the mysteries of how vitreous is composed and what role it plays in normal physiology as well as pathology. Over the years, however, many studies have produced important findings concerning vitreous biochemistry, structure, physiology, and pathobiology. Published on the 25th anniversary of Sebag's first book on Vitreous, this second installment is nearly five times longer than its predecessor, reflecting how much has been learned in the past quarter century. This well-constructed compendium not only addresses the most current scientific knowledge, but also reviews clinical perspectives in a manner that lends richness to the scope of the book. Written by 90 authors, this book has 56 chapters organized into 7 sections: Biochemistry; Anatomy, Development, and Aging; Pathology/Pathobiology; Physiology and Phamacotherapy; Posterior Vitreo-Retinal Surgery; Peripheral Vitreo-Retinal Surgery; and Pharmacologic Vitreolysis. With a foreword by Coleman & Lincoff and an introduction by Wallace Foulds, Sebag's latest tome on vitreous is destined to be the authoritative text for years to come. The Glaucomas
