Simplex Society: How to Humanize
By Koen Stroeken. 2024
This open access book provides thought-provoking anthropology grounded in comparative ethnography. The theory captures the current historical moment, the long-term…
trends that led us here, and the prospects for a humane future. The experience of complexity characterizing a globalized information society triggers simplexes. These unidimensional responses instrumental in bringing about a predictable effect are altering our ways of communicating and the technologies we design. In Part I, a ‘speciated’ history, injected with the anthropology of Bateson and Gluckman, describes the semantic and experiential impoverishment of the lifeworld. After going through the affects of distrust (the neolithic lifeway), of futility (industrial lifeway) and disconnection (post-knowledge), the human species today depends for its survival on installing a new lifeway, which manages to wed (eco-social) inclusion to the already difficult first pair of the French Revolution. The species needs to rehumanize. Part II illustrates the remedies currently developed: to reframe, re-sphere and re-source. What do critical street art, international football matches, presidential elections, hip-hop dissing performances, charismatic church services, intuition stimulation, and ‘pre-ceptive’ experiences of consciousness have in common? They are moments of the real. Rooted in ‘life sensing’, they are tensors organizing frameshift. As multiplex measures tackling the simplex, these tensors overcome the cultural relativism of the postmodern matrix.

Political Communication and Performative Leadership: Populism in International Politics (The Palgrave Macmillan Series in International Political Communication)
By Corina Lacatus, Gustav Meibauer, Georg Löfflmann. 2023
This edited collection explores the intersections of populist communication, performative leadership and international politics. It investigates the mechanisms and dynamics…
connecting these core conceptual fields and offers empirical examples. Together, the contributors to the volume argue that populist communication, i.e. the language, deliberation and discursive performance of populist ideas, has a profound and lasting impact not only on domestic politics, but in terms of foreign policies as well as the conduct of international politics writ large. First, populist communication shapes how global, regional and transborder issues are debated and strategically used for political purposes domestically. Second, populist communication changes when and how states and other actors in turn formulate responses and policies vis-a-vis, for example, migration, global health, climate change, trade, or war. Finally, populist communication affects the nature of international politics. It influences how actors conduct themselves internationally, and how we may conceive of core concepts and practices such as diplomacy, security, cooperation, and order. To illustrate these mechanisms, the contributors explore cases from around the world, demonstrating the relevance of populist communication for international politics in both the Global South and the Global North.

By Andrew Lewis. 2023
This monograph provides some useful tools for performing global geometric analysis on real analytic manifolds. At the core of the…
methodology of the book is a variety of descriptions for the topologies for the space of real analytic sections of a real analytic vector bundle and for the space of real analytic mappings between real analytic manifolds. To illustrate the techniques in the book, a number of fundamental constructions in differential geometry are shown to induce continuous mappings on spaces of real analytic sections and mappings.Aimed at researchers at the level of Doctoral students and above, the book introduces the reader to the challenges and opportunities of real analytic analysis and geometry.

A Social Dreaming Experience at the Time of COVID 19 (New Paradigms in Healthcare)
By Elisabetta Pasini, Cinzia Trimboli. 2023
The book describes the experience of four Social Dreaming Matrices held online between March and May 2020, during the first…
lockdown caused by the Covid 19 emergency. The pandemic isolated us and imposed prolonged contact with ourselves and our solitary thoughts. Against this backdrop, there was hope for change, a desire for a different kind of sociability and different forms of intimacy. On the basis of this evidence, our research supports the shift "from experiencing trauma to reacting to trauma", looking at a collective traumatic experience not only as something to be overcome but as an opportunity for a transformation that changes our mental schemes in relation to the external context. We have identified Social Dreaming as a privileged technique to overcome a collective traumatic experience, supporting its elaboration through collective feelings, new connections between intuition and rational thought, the discovery of community meanings. The authors's thesis is that the much-needed transition from 'magical thinking' to 'transformative thinking' takes place in a setting that is able to contain the anxieties of life's transitional phases, supporting the creation of new rituals and new social bonds and sustaining the passage from “me” to a “wider we”.
