Women are an essential part of the history of the piano—but how many women pianists can you name? Throughout…
most of the piano&’s history, women pianists lacked access to formal training and were excluded from male-dominated performance spaces. Even the modern piano&’s keys were designed without consideration of women&’s typically smaller hands. Yet despite their music being largely confined to the domestic sphere, women continued to play, perform, and compose on their own terms. Celebrated pianist and author Susan Tomes traces fifty such women across the piano&’s history. Including now-famous names such as Clara Schumann and Fanny Mendelssohn, Tomes also highlights overlooked women: from Hélène de Montgeroult, whose playing saved her life during the French Revolution, to Leopoldine Wittgenstein, influential Viennese salonnière, and Hazel Scott, the first Black performer in the United States to have a nationally syndicated TV show. From Maria Szymanowska to Nina Simone, and including interviews with women performing today, this is a much-needed corrective to our understanding of the piano—and a timely testament to women&’s musical lives.By Wendy Loggia. 2023

Many people regard stammering as a joke, reinforced by the fact that they are usually portrayed on film and television…
as figures of fun: Michael Palin in a Fish Called Wanda, Ronnie Barker in Open All Hours. But for those who stammer - and there are half a million in Britain -the affliction is a constant source of misery and embarrassment. The Stammering Handbook aims to help stammerers of all ages cope with it in everyday life - at work, at home, at school, at play. It will be illustrated with case histories and contains advice and help for friends and relations, too. Fully endorsed by and written with the help of The British Stammering Association, THE STAMMERING HANDBOOK is essential reading.By David Delargy, Eugene O'Hagan, Martin O'Hagan. 2010
Known collectively as The Priests, Fr Martin, Fr Eugene and Fr David, have taken the music world by storm. Since…
they signed their much-reported Sony contract in front of Westminster Cathedral in April 2008, their album has sold almost 2,000,000 copies worldwide and broke the Guinness record for the fastest-selling debut classical album in the UK. It has also chalked up an impressive fifteen weeks at No. 1 on the Classic FM chart and was nominated for a Classical Brit Award. In June 2009, The Priests topped off their incredibly successful year with a highly-acclaimed mini-tour of the UK and Ireland. But long lunches in swanky restaurants and celebrity parties count for little with these down-to-earth, wonderfully talented singers, because first and foremost, David, Martin and Eugene are priests; their faith and the work they undertake in their busy parishes takes priority over everything else they do. So, whilst their gruelling promotional schedule for the album has taken them around the world - from Europe to Montreal and Toronto, from Washington to New York and Sydney, where they have played to packed houses and given dozens of press, radio and tv interviews - they have always been happy to return to their parishes in Belfast and the people they serve. Now in Soul Song, The Priests draw upon their unique experiences as priests and performers, their love of music and their faith, as they weave together a rich, illuminating tapestry of spiritual wisdom. Insightful and engaging, it is a treasury of memories which offers us all a rare and timely opportunity to reflect on our own journey through life.By Jan De Vries. 1992
In this latest book in the 'By Appointment Only' series, Jan de Vries deals with the ever increasing problems of…
skin diseases. Drawing on over 35 years' experience, he writes about causes, effects and ways of alleviating irritating and sometimes disfiguring problems. In Skin Diseases Jan de Vries deals with everything from acne, allergies and dermatitis, to the latest developments in the treatment of psoriasis. He explains why infantile eczema is so much more prolific now and how it can be helped by simply eliminating cow's milk from the diet. He discusses some of the more obscure fungal conditions which are prevalent in today's society, explains why there is such a high incidence and how these can be overcome by simple herbal remedies and naturopathic treatment in the home. This book is essential reading for anyone who has suffered from any irritating skin condition, and generally offers sensible guidelines for healthier living.By Simon Goddard. 2014
They had just a few hundred pounds, one band missing a drummer, a sock drawer for an office, more dreams…
than sense and not a clue between them how to run a record company. But when Alan Horne and Edwyn Collins decided to start their own label from a shabby Glasgow flat in 1979, nobody was going to stand in their way.Postcard Records was the mad, makeshift and quite preposterous result. Launching the careers of Orange Juice, Aztec Camera and cult heroes Josef K, the self-styled ‘Sound of Young Scotland’ stuck it to the London music biz and, quite by accident, kickstarted the 1980s indie music revolution.Simon Goddard has interviewed everyone involved in the making of the Postcard legend to tell this thrilling rock’n’roll story of punk audacity, knickerbocker glories, broken windscreens, raccoon-fur hats, comedy, violence and creating something beautiful from nothing, against all the odds.By Amelia Freer. 2019

A New York Times bestselling author and Harvard-educated M.D. shows you how to grow new receptors for your seven major…
metabolic hormones, helping you to lose weight and feel great, fast! When weight loss is your goal, you often don’t think about hormones. But when you develop resistance to the seven major metabolic hormones (cortisol, thyroid, testosterone, growth hormone, leptin, insulin and estrogen), your body is programmed to adjust by raising your hormone levels higher and higher. Since these hormones regulate your metabolism, it will get slower and slower, making you fatter and fatter! The solution is to reprogram your hormonal levels by repairing hormone receptors and growing new ones. In The Body Cure, Dr. Sara Gottfried uses cutting-edge research in a weight-loss and energy program that will reverse hormone resistance in just twenty-one days. As a result, you will boost your metabolism and calorie-burning by growing new and fresh thyroid receptors; increase your weight loss by re-balancing estrogen and progesterone receptors; and reverse your aging by resetting glucocorticoid receptors, for better cortisol processing. For the last twenty years, Harvard–MIT-educated physician Dr. Sara Gottfried has helped thousands of patients address the root hormonal causes of what bothers them most: excess weight, lack of energy, aging and illness. This program is the next generation of her deep understanding of hormonal optimization for rapid weight-loss and better health.By Geezer Butler. 2023
A rollicking, effusive, and candid memoir by the heavy metal musician and founding member of Black Sabbath, covering his years…
as the band’s bassist and main lyricist through his later-career projects, and detailing how one of rock’s most influential bands formed and prevailed. With over 70 million records sold, Black Sabbath, dubbed by Rolling Stone “the Beatles of heavy metal,” helped create the genre itself, with their distinctive heavy riffs, tuned down guitars, and apocalyptic lyrics. Bassist and primary lyricist Geezer Butler played a gigantic part in the band’s renown, from suggesting the band name to using his fascination with horror, religion, and the occult to compose the lyrics and build the foundation of heavy metal as we know it.In Into the Void, Butler tells his side of the story, from the band’s beginnings as a scrappy blues quartet in Birmingham through the struggles leading to the many well-documented lineup changes while touring around London’s gritty clubs (Eric Clapton, Jimi Hendrix, Frank Zappa, and The Who makes notable appearances!), and the band’s important later years. He writes honestly of his childhood in a working-class family of seven in Luftwaffe-battered Birmingham, his almost-life as an accountant, and how his disillusionment with organized religion and class systems would spawn the lyrics and artistic themes that would resonate so powerfully with fans around the world.Into the Void reveals the softer side of the heavy metal legend and the formation of one of rock’s most exciting bands, while holding nothing back. Like Geezer’s bass lines, it is both original, dramatic, and forever surprising.Reflexology is a complementary healing technique, second only to aromatherapy in popularity. London 1962. Five young hooligans have formed a band and are on a collision course with the austere and intolerant…
values of post-war Britain. From their beginning in a scummy flat off the Kings Road to the notorious Redlands scandal, this is the anarchic rollercoaster ride of the Stones’ first five years. We follow our heroes in a rags-to-riches romp of sex, scandal, mischief and uproarious behaviour as they challenge the establishment, invent the archetype of the rebellious, parent-scaring rock star lothario and, eventually, receive their comeuppance from the powers that be. Presented with the audacious wit and bawdy humour of a vintage novel, complete with Dickensian illustrations, Rollaresque celebrates the young Stones in the grand English literary tradition of lovable rogues. be the funniest music book ever written' ObserverThe Fall are one of the most distinctive British bands, their music - odd, spare, cranky and repetitious - an acknowledged influence on The Smiths, The Happy Mondays, Nirvana and Franz Ferdinand. And Mark E. Smith IS The Fall.47 members have come and gone over the years yet he remains its charismatic leader, a professional outsider and all-round enemy of compromise, a true enigma. There have been a number of biographies of the legendary Smith, but this is the first time he has opened up in a full autobiography. For the first time we get to hear his full, candid take on the ups and downs of a band as notorious for its in-house fighting as for its great music; and on a life that has endured prison in America, drugs, bankruptcy, divorce, and the often bleak results of a legendary thirst.'A riot' Independent on Sunday 'Unbeatable' Time Out'Vicious' Daily Telegraph'Hilarious' Scotland on SundayBy Sara Dallin, Keren Woodward. 2020

about growing older.Colourful, informative and inspiring, The Race Against Time is a story of cold science and heart-warming resilience; of champions and also-rans; of sprinting centenarians and forty-something super-athletes barely touched by age. Its heroes are experts and enthusiasts - scientists, coaches, runners - from many countries, each with a different story to tell. This is a book for anyone who has ever felt the healing power of running – or simply wondered about the effects of ageing. It is both a very personal account of one man's journey from despair to hope, and an exhilarating guide, explaining how timely adjustments to lifestyle and training can slow the progress of physiological decay, while sheer human spirit can, if you are lucky, keep you running happily and healthily, all the way into extreme old age.
