REBECCA NETLEYGothic Nostalgia: The Uses of Toxic Memory in 21st Century Popular Culture (Palgrave Gothic)
By Simon Bacon, Katarzyna Bronk-Bacon. 2024
This book is an original and innovative study of how Gothic nostalgia and toxic memory are used to underpin and…
promote the ongoing culture wars and populist politics in contemporary popular culture. The essays collected here cover topics from the spectral to the ecological, deep fakes to toxic ableism, Mary Poppins to John Wick to reveal how the use of an imaginary past to shape the present, creates truly Gothic times that we can never escape. These ‘hungry ghosts’ from the past find resonance with the Gothic which speaks equally of a past that often not only haunts the present but will not let it escape its grasp. This collection will look at the confluence between various kinds of toxic nostalgia and popular culture to suggest the ways in which contemporary populism has resurrected ideological monsters from the grave to gorge on the present and any possibility of change that the future might represent. This book explores how three Anglo-Irish writers, J.C. Mangan, J.S. Le Fanu and Bram Stoker, use settings in their short…
fictions to recreate, depict and confront Ireland’s colonial situation in the nineteenth century. This study provides an innovative approach by targeting a genre (the short story) which has not been explored in its entirety— certainly not within nineteenth century Ireland - much less using a postcolonial approach to the short story. Added to this is the fact that it analyses how these writers used settings as an anticolonial tool. To do so, the book is divided into two major sections, an analysis of Irish settings and non-Irish ones. It works on the premise that all three writers used the idea of displacement to target colonialism and its effects on Irish society. In short, this book addresses a gap in scholarship, as the Irish Gothic short story as a decolonizing tool has not been sufficiently and globally studied. The Seminar
By Reuven Bryer. 2012
‘The Seminar’ is a fiction novel narrated by a cynical out of work aspiring actress recalling her mysterious epoch mesmerizing…
journey, all of which happens in one spectacular weekend. Every turn she takes, even outside of the seminar room, becomes more surreal than the last. She meets a physically and financially broken down man who somehow intrigues her. His past seminar experiences help guide her through the conceptual complexities and the jargon of the seminar but unusual powers he displays confound her and unravel with spiraling twists. It is of little wonder why the three hundred and fifty people would attend a free weekend seminar titled ‘50 Passageways To Riches’ in an era of global recessions, depressions, down turned economies, high unemployment, and world hunger. There is a dichotomy though where people still have the dreams and the urges to become successful entrepreneurs when the global mindset has been instilled with such low confidence. ‘The Seminar’ provides far more than just fifty passageways to riches. Mentors, gurus, seminar leaders, provocative and prolific teachers present themselves throughout the entire weekend providing insight that not only she witnesses, but the reader may also get what is commonly found in a seminar experience. That would be what addresses the positive elicited changes in the essence of the psyche, the consciousness, or perhaps self-perception, all of which are capable of transforming even the unemployed layman into a successful entrepreneur. Anyone who has never experienced attending a seminar on any form of personal achievement, which can cost, and be worth, thousands of dollars, can get a good feel of one here. Anyone who has experienced such a seminar will find this one quite unique and very special. The author has been attending seminars since the 1960’s on a wide spectrum of subjects, many of which he covers in the ‘Passageways to Riches,’ while telling a unique mysterious love story within, ‘The Seminar’.Tempting Little Thief

Bastian Bishop. That's his name. He's rough, rugged, and utterly unpredictable. Silent and steady one second, and a nightmare the…
next. He's an outsider and in my world outsiders don't belong. But he doesn't seem to care. After one night of reckless rebellion, the tattooed tyrant keeps coming back, sneaking into my world without permission, and causing trouble I can't allow. I should end it before my father discovers my existence and does it for me. But Bastian says, like it or not ... I am his now, that nothing and no one will stand in his way. What he refuses to understand is I'm a Girl of Greyson, a coveted queen of sorts in the underground crime world. He's a nobody with nothing to his name. We could never be. Or so I thought I did, until betrayal burns so deep that suddenly nothing makes sense. Nothing but him...Tracing the Shadow of Secrecy and Government Transparency in Eighteenth-Century France
By Nicole Bauer. 2023
This book traces changing attitudes towards secrecy in eighteenth-century France, and explores the cultural origins of ideas surrounding government transparency.…
The idea of keeping secrets, both on the part of individuals and on the part of governments, came to be viewed with more suspicion as the century progressed. By the eve of the French Revolution, writers voicing concerns about corruption saw secrecy as part and parcel of despotism, and this shift went hand in hand with the rise of the idea of transparency. The author argues that the emphasis placed on government transparency, especially the mania for transparency that dominated the French Revolution, resulted from the surprising connections and confluence of changing attitudes towards honour, religious movements, rising nationalism, literature, and police practices. Exploring religious ideas that associated secrecy with darkness and wickedness, and proto-nationalist discourse that equated foreignness with secrecy, this book demonstrates how cultural shifts in eighteenth-century France influenced its politics. Covering the period of intense fear during the French Revolution and the paranoia of the Reign of Terror, the book highlights the complex interplay of culture and politics and provides insights into our attitudes towards secrecy today. The Four Symbols: The Black Sun Trilogy, Book 1 (The Black Sun Series #1)
