Throughout much of the western world more and more people are being sent to prison, one of a number of…
changes inspired by a 'new punitiveness' in penal and political affairs. This book seeks to understand these developments, bringing together leading authorities in the field to provide a wide-ranging analysis of new penal trends, compare the development of differing patterns of punishment across different types of societies, and to provide a range of theoretical analyses and commentaries to help understand their significance. As well as increases in imprisonment this book is also concerned to address a number of other aspects of 'the new punitiveness': firstly, the return of a number of forms of punishment previously thought extinct or inappropriate, such as the return of shaming punishments and chain gangs (in parts of the USA); and secondly, the increasing public involvement in penal affairs and penal development, for example in relation to length of sentences and the California Three Strikes Law, and a growing accreditation of the rights of victims. The book will be essential reading for students seeking to understand trends and theories of punishment on law, criminology, penology and other courses.By David A. Butterworth, Per-Olof H. Wikstrom. 2006
This book examines young people's involvement in crime (including crimes of violence, vandalism, shoplifting, burglary and car crime) as both…
victims and offenders. Although adolescence is the time when involvement in crime peaks, few previous UK-based studies have attempted to provide a methodical and comprehensive understanding of adolescent offending on a city-wide basis. This book seeks a better understanding of adolescent crime by studying the relationship between individual characteristics (social bonds and morality and self-control) and lifestyles (as defined by delinquent peers, substance use and exposure to risky behaviour settings) and their joint influence on adolescent involvement in crime, against the backdrop of the juveniles' social context - taking into account family, school and neighbourhood influences. The findings of this study suggest the existence of three main groups of adolescent offenders; propensity induced offenders, life-style dependent offenders and situationally limited offenders, groups of offenders having different causal backgrounds to their crime involvement, and who therefore may warrant different strategies for effective prevention.By Alan France, Ross Homel. 2007
This book is concerned with the development of prevention policies and approaches that involve intervention 'early' in the lives of…
children, young people and their families, and explores new evidence that has been emerging from longitudinal and developmental prevention research. It addresses a number of key challenges, arguing that by broadening the research questions and exploring contributions from a wider range of disciplines our understanding of both the pathways into and out of crime and the type of interventions that might work will be greatly enhanced.By William J. Chambliss, Raymond Michalowski, Ronald C. Kramer. 2010
State Crime in the Global Age brings together original writings from leading scholars in the field to explore the many…
ways that the use and abuse of state power results in grave social harms that outweigh, by far, the consequences of ordinary street crime. The topics covered include the crimes of empire, illegal war, the bombing of civilians, state sanctioned torture, state sacrifice of human lives, and judicial wrongdoing. The book breaks new ground through its examination of the ways globalization has intensified potentials for state crime, as well as bringing novel theoretical understandings of the state to the study of state crime, and exploring strategies for confronting state crime. This book, while containing much that is of interest to scholars of state crime, is designed to be accessible to students and others who are concerned with the ways individuals, social groups, and whole nations are victimized by the misuse of state power.By Gordon Bazemore, Mara Schiff. 2004

Foundation, provides an overview of the restorative justice conferencing programs currently in operation in the United States, paying particular attention to the qualitative dimensions of this, based on interviews, focus groups and ethnographic observation. It provides an unrivalled view of restorative justice conferencing in practice, and what the people involved felt and thought about it. The book looks at four structural variations in the face-to-face form of restorative decision making: family group conferences, victim-offender mediation/dialogue, neighborhood accountability boards, peacemaking circles. The authors address two issues that have received limited research emphasis in restorative justice: the lack of clear and consistent standards, and the absence of testable theories of intervention that reflect what has become a rather diverse practice. In response the authors conclude with a proposed structure for principle-based evaluation designed to test emerging theories of restorative decision making.By Robert A. Geffner, Robyn Spurling Igelman, Jennifer Zellner. 2003
Learn how to help children cope with domestic violence! The Effects of Intimate Partner Violence on Children examines the short-…
and long-term developmental issues facing children exposed to violence in their own homes. The book addresses the growing concern for children at risk of suffering psychological, behavioral, social, and educational problems, and for the effects childhood maltreatment may have on their adult lives. An interdisciplinary panel of researchers, academicians, attorneys, clinicians, and practitioners discuss treatment programs, theoretical perspectives, research and methodological issues, assessment and intervention, and forensic issues, including child custody. The Effects of Intimate Partner Violence on Children addresses the emotional and behavioral disturbances children can suffer after being exposed to violence between their parents. It examines methodological and theoretical challenges, pilot programs for treatment, intervention models, therapeutic curricula, and family law. Practitioners and academics review dozens of studies, representative samples, probability samples, and research findings relating to children's internalizing and externalizing behaviors, adjustment difficulties, coping strategies. The book also examines: the association between emotional regulation and emotionality and marital and parent-child conflict in terms of children's adjustment and physical health how the experience of mothers in low-income families suffering severe physical abuse relates to children's behavior problems. how father-to-mother aggression reduces children's affinity with their parents problems of service delivery for battered mothers Canadian legislation involving wife abuse and child custody the well-being of families accessing treatment group interventions implemented in family agency and school settings how to develop interagency protocols and much more! The Effects of Intimate Partner Violence on Children is an essential resource for professionals, advocates, and practitioners who work with abused children and maltreating families.By Lode Walgrave. 2003
Restorative justice has become an increasingly important element in reform and change to criminal justice systems throughout the western world,…
and there are many reasons for satisfaction with the progress that has been made --from the point of view of victims, offenders, the level and incidence of reoffending, and in terms of public opinion. At the same time there has been cause for concern, not least to do with the confusion on aims that has accompanied the rapid spread of restorative justice practices, an over-estimate of its possibilities, a blurring of concepts and a lack of attention to legal rights and processes. This book, based on papers presented at the 5th international conference held at Leuven, Belgium in 2002, aims to provide an overview of recent experience of restorative justice in the light of these concerns. The central theme is the positioning, or repositioning, of restorative justice in contexts where it can offer hope to communities both fearful of crime and looking for more socially constructive responses to crime. At the same time restorative justice practitioners seek definition in relation to the kinds of crime it is appropriate to apply restorative justice to, how it relates to different forms of punishment, to rehabilitation, and how it fits in with criminal justice systems and the law of different countries --how to reconcile the informal, participatory philosophy of restorative justice with formal legal processes and the need for legal safeguards.By Garth Nix, Stephen Graham Jones, Alma Katsu, Josh Malerman. 2023

J. G. Ballard&’s collected nonfiction from 1962 to 2007, mapping the cultural obsessions, experiences, and insights of one of the most…
original minds of his generation.J. G. Ballard was a colossal figure in English literature and an imaginative force of the twentieth century. Alongside seminal novels—from the notorious Crash (1973) to the semi-autobiographical Empire of the Sun (1984)—Ballard was a sought-after reviewer and commentator, publishing journalism, memoir, and cultural criticism in a variety of forms. The Selected Nonfiction of J. G. Ballard collects the most significant short nonfiction of Ballard&’s fifty-year career, extending the range of the only previous collection of his nonfiction, A User&’s Guide to the Millennium (1996), which selected essays and reviews published between 1962 and 1995.A decade on from Ballard&’s death in 2009, a new generation of readers needs a new collection. In the period following A User&’s Guide, Ballard&’s writing addressed 9/11, British politics from New Labour onward, and what he termed &“the rise of soft fascism&”—a diagnosis that maintains its relevance amid a shift toward right populism in European and US politics. Beautifully edited by Ballard scholar and novelist Mark Blacklock, this volume includes Ballard&’s editorials and manifestos; commentaries on his own work; commentaries on the work of others; reviews; and more. Above all, it makes the case for the currency of Ballard&’s work at a contemporary juncture at which so many of his diagnoses concerning the media and politics have become apparent.By W. B. Yeats. 1970
First published in 1970, this book is a faithful representation of the original edition of Beltaine, a literary magazine edited…
by W. B. Yeats from May 1899 to April 1900. Beltaine was the first of several magazines of the Irish Literary Theatre (later to become The Abbey Theatre) in which Yeats’s editorial role was of utmost importance. It was an occasional publication and focused on promoting current works of Irish playwrights whilst challenging those of their English opponents. The magazine mainly consists of a series of essays on the theatre in Dublin, and supplementing these are explanations and discussions of new plays, excerpts from which are often included. This book will be of interest to those with an interest in Yeats, early nineteenth-century literature, and Irish theatre.By Edward W. Wallace, Michael J. Cunningham, Daniel Boggiano. 2016

else must be done to address the problem of domestic violence! Domestic Violence Offenders presents recent research, current interventions, and legal standards for people arrested for domestic violence. It also addresses the controversies that have arisen in the wake of the mandatory standards for batterer interventions that have been established by various jurisdictions, examining the type of treatment modality and content permitted by various jurisdictions, the duration of treatment, and the relationship of the various standards to actual research. This essential book also provides suggestions for a more inclusive, less rigid process for creating standards and policies for use with this population. Handy tables and charts make the information easily accessible. From the editors: “The initial societal response to intimate partner violence was the development of the shelter movement for battered women. Women&’s shelters and/or safe houses developed in almost all major population areas throughout the United States and abroad. The goals were to provide a safe environment for abused women and their children, to offer advocacy, counseling, and medical services, and to empower women to leave their abusers. While shelters continue to serve these and other critical needs and are an essential part of the service delivery system for battered women, they address only part of the problem. Left untreated, batterers often will continue to abuse their partners who leave shelters and return to the relationship. If their partners leave the relationship, the batterers may find new victims to abuse. The response to this harsh reality was the development of batterer intervention programs.” Domestic Violence Offenders provides you with informed discussions of: the implications of research and policies for those providing interventions why it is premature for states to establish certain rigid standards for batterer programs, and how some of the current standards may produce more harm than good the history of batterer intervention programs completion and recidivism among court- and self-referred batterers the Alternatives to Violence program and the experiences and perceptions of its founder common aspects of various intervention programs—confidentiality, group structure and length, partner contacts, leadership configuration, and program goals topics addressed by most programs—power and control, anger management, substance abuse, stress reduction, parenting, communication, and more the controversial and often misunderstood issue of female partner aggression and violence the Stages of Change approach to domestic violence treatment lethality assessment and safety planning for partners of batterers the advantages of conjoint therapy for certain types of cases the Illinois Protocol for batterer programs outcome research on programs for batterers and a great deal more!By Tony Ward, Andrew Day, Sharon Casey, Kevin Howells, James Vess. 2010

It is divided into three sections: part one unpacks a model of treatment readiness, and explains how it has been operationalized part two discusses how the construct has been applied to the treatment of different offender groups part three iscusses some of the practice approaches that have been identified as holding promise in addressing low levels of offender readiness are discussed. Included within each section are contributions from a number of authors whose work, in recent years, has stimulated discussion and helped to inform practice in offender rehabilitation. This book is an ideal resource for those who study within the field of criminology, or who work in the criminal justice system, and have an interest in the delivery of rehabilitation and reintegration programmes for offenders. This timely book shows how the rapidly increasing phenomenon of violence in the U.S. is invading college and university campuses.…
Campus Violence shows what colleges, universities, and other schools can do to deconstruct the violence culture and begin to educate for a better society. The chapters assist educators in determining the nature of both external and internal violence and what to do about it. Readers will benefit from the experiences of many institutions of higher learning as communicated by various outstanding contributors to this book. By becoming sharply aware of the issues and solutions, administrators may engage in better, more realistic long-range planning, as well as get help for the myriad daily questions and problems inherent to running today’s campuses. As a whole, the book is devoted to highlighting important kinds, causes, and cures of violence destructive to living and learning opportunities. The contributors address the full range of issues from conceptualization to practical ways of handling violent behaviors. Section I: Addresses the broadest, most far-reaching views of campus violence: the conceptualization of campus violence, administration perspectives, the destructive concoction of alcohol and other drugs and morbidity, and the commercial promotion of mindless violence. Section II: Addresses specific kinds of violence. Section III: Focuses on the most frequent immediate perpetrators--male college students--and how their behavior can be dealt with and improved. Section IV: Focuses very specifically on how the college counselor or psychotherapist can be a consultant to staff and faculty in regard to disruptive students.Campus Violence depicts the need to nurture and develop atmospheres for learning, respect, and constructive action--arguably the most pressing topic in education today. Counselors, therapists, security officers, deans, and presidents can begin to counter the rapidly increasing phenomenon of violence in American colleges and universities and cultivate a positive leadership atmosphere. The implications of the contributing authors reach to the primary and secondary schools in our nation--the training grounds for college life and education--and provoke some questions which begin to create a better learning environment.Originally published in 1989, Jail Journeys was a contemporary history of the English prison system in the words of those…
who had endured it as prisoners or who had worked within it. More than 1000 extracts from more than 150 first-hand accounts of life ‘inside’ chronicle the empty routines of the prison day and tell of the loneliness, the despair, the squalor, the fights, the friendships, the sex, the humour. There are also eye-witness accounts of the Dartmoor Mutiny, of hangings and floggings, of escapes, and personal statements by the well-known – James Phelan, Wilfred Macartney, Albert Pierrepoint, Charles Kray, John McVicar, Jimmy Boyle, Alfie Hinds, Lord Alfred Douglas – and by many others less well known. These testimonies, by turn dramatic, literate and naïve, add up to an implicit sociology of the twentieth-century English prison, depicting a divided social structure with ‘screws’ on one side and ‘cons’ on the other. The book is aimed at anyone with an interest in social issues and twentieth-century history as well as students of law, history, sociology, criminology, and social administration, and at professionals working in all these fields.By Vivian Gornick, Robert Atwan. 2023

to the long and honorable history of the personal essay by way of the value they place on lived experience.” Provocative, daring, and honest at a time when many writers are deliberately silencing themselves in the face of authoritarian and populist censorship movements, the twenty-one essays collected here reflect their authors’ unapologetic observations of the world around them. From an inmate struggling to find purpose during his prison sentence to a doctor coping with the unpredictable nature of her patient, to a widow wishing for just a little more time with her late husband, these narratives—and the others featured in this anthology—celebrate the endurance of the human spirit. The Best American Essays 2023 includes Ciara Alfaro • Jillian Barnet • Sylvie Baumgartel • Eric Borsuk • Chris Dennis • Xujun Eberlein • Sandra Hager Eliason • George Estreich • Merrill Joan Gerber • Debra Gwartney • Edward Hoagland • Laura Kipnis • Phillip Lopate • Celeste Marcus • Sam Meekings • Sigrid Nunez • Kathryn Schulz • Anthony Siegel • Scott Spencer • Angelique Stevens • David TreuerBy Dick Kirby. 2020
“So if you’re a fan of Peaky Blinders and want to read the true stories behind those characters and tales…
. . . this is the book for you.” —Britain’s Gangland MagazineBetween the two World Wars, there was a dramatic upsurge of violence as rival criminal gangs vied for rich pickings from bookmakers at racetracks throughout England. With ready access to cash, “bookies” were a magnet for mobsters’ blackmailing demands. Refusal to pay resulted in severe punishment. Their justified fears spawned a ready “protection” market.Conflict between rival gangs were frequent and increasingly violent. Charles “Darby” Sabini with his brothers ran “The Italian Mob” who clashed with Billy Kimber and his Brummagen Hammers.Uneasy partnerships were formed but seldom lasted. The Sabinis were friendly with the Cortesi family until a rift resulted in one of the Cortesis shooting Harryboy Sabini. Other gangs such as The Titanics and The Nile Mob were ready to fill voids. As well as broken alliances, internal friction and members changing sides resulted in bloodshed on the streets, in pubs and clubs and on the courses. Public order was so threatened that the Flying Squad was tasked with the eradication of the problem and, in 1936, the celebrated Battle of Lewes Racecourse brought matters to a bloody conclusion. This well researched and gripping account describes the vicious dramas played out in the 1920s and 1930s.
