Often, people use nicotine, caffeine, and some level of alcohol in varying combinations at different times of the day in…
order to optimize their functioning and feelings of well-being, whether at work, in leisure time, or in a social context. However, until now, studies on the effects of this everyday practice have been diverse, widespread, and insufficiently summarized. Recently developed methods to study the effects in more detail have received little attention, especially among a nonscientific readership. Nicotine, Caffeine and Social Drinking focuses readers' attention on the effects of normal, socially accepted psychoactive substances on cognitive performance and on the brain. Divided into three sections, this book studies each substance individually before examining the effects of their combined usage.By Barry Stimmel. 2002
Gain a fuller understanding of substance addiction and treatment options!Originally published in 1992 as The Facts About Drug Use, this…
updated edition contains new information about the effects of alcohol and recreational, mood-altering drugs on the body. The multiple causes of drug use and the options available to those dependent on drugs as a way of life are thoroughly and clearly described. Drug use affects nearly 1 out of 2 Americans and cuts across every social and economic boundary. The effects of addiction on the individual are great, and the cumulative effects on society are staggering. Knowledge of the adverse effects of mood-altering drugs and why and how they are used excessively is a centerpiece of this book. It presents, intelligently and interestingly, ways to identify persons at risk and identify problems that the addicted encounter in attempts to become drug free. Alcoholism, Drug Addiction, and the Road to Recovery: Life on the Edge is an essential tool in both finding available resources for drug users and developing appropriate responses to today's drug problem. This remarkable, well-referenced book enables those with little or no background in science or health care to understand the complex issues surrounding drug use. It provides current, reliable, and unbiased information on methods for dealing with dependency upon alcohol and central nervous system depressants, hallucinogens, heroin, nicotine, marijuana, caffeine, amphetamines, designer drugs like Ecstasy, and steroids. A glossary listing common street names for drugs will be invaluable to those interested in identifying specific substances. This comprehensive volume will show you: who typically uses drugs and the reasons why they do how to classify mood-altering drugs how to identify and treat drug dependency areas of special concern such as multiple drug use, AIDS and drug use, drugs and pregnancy, drugs and sports, and drug testing technologyChapter by chapter, this nonjudgmental book helps readers develop a better understanding of the effects of mood-altering substances and the reasons many continue to use them despite serious consequences. This is a valuable key to the nature of dependency and addiction, and the external forces (including poverty and homelessness) that promote such behavior.A striking characteristic of addictive behavior is the pursuit of immediate reward at the risk of longer-term detrimental outcomes. It…
is typically accompanied by the expression of a strong desire to cease from or at least control consumption that has such consequences, followed by lapse, further resolution, relapse, and so on. Understood in this way, addiction includes substance abuse as well as behavioral compulsions like excessive gambling or even uncontrollable shopping. Behavioral economics and neurophysiology provide well-worn paths to understanding this behavior and this book regards them as central components of this quest. However, the specific question it seeks to answer is, What part does cognition – the desires we pursue and the beliefs we have about how to accomplish them – play in explaining addictive behavior? The answer is sought in a methodology that indicates why and where cognitive explanation is necessary, the form it should take, and the outcomes of employing it to understand addiction. It applies the Behavioral Perspective Model (BPM) of consumer choice, a tried and tested theory of more routine consumption, ranging from everyday product and brand choice, through credit purchasing and environmental despoliation, to the more extreme aspects of consumption represented by compulsion and addiction. The book will advance debate among behavioral scientists, cognitive psychologists, and other professionals about the nature of economic and social behavior.By Ari Kalechstein, Wilfred G. van Gorp. 2007
Substance use continues to be a major public health problem, and the ramifications of this are manifold. For instance, at…
present, on a yearly basis, the total economic cost of substance misuse is literally hundreds of billions of dollars. These costs are related to a number of factors, including, but not limited to, treatment and prevention, reduced job productivity and/or absenteeism, interdiction by the criminal justice, and incarceration. There are many more psychosocial consequences of substance misuse, and these have been well–documented over the past four to five decades; in contrast, with the exception of alcohol, the effects of substance misuse on the brain have received attention only in the past 10 to 15 years. An emerging body of literature has reported on the effects of various drugs on neuropsychological functioning, including benzodiazepines, cocaine, marijuana, MDMA, methamphetamine, nicotine, and opioids. Despite the fact that the neuropsychological consequences of many drugs of abuse are well–documented, to our knowledge, no one had previously published an edited volume that focused exclusively on this issue. Based on this fact, we decided to create a volume that would review the available literature regarding on this topic. Neuropsychology and Substance Misuse: State-of-the-Art and Future Directions explores cutting-edge issues, and will be of interest to clinical neuropsychologists who require the latest findings in this increasingly important area of neuropsychology.By Charles Wuth, Alan A Cavaiola. 2002

offenders. It also will provide you with up-to-date assessment strategies that can be employed with offenders, who characteristically are resistant to such assessment. Until now, books written on this subject have focused purely on research that has been done with offenders. This book, however, provides both theoretical and applied strategies for working with this very difficult population in clinical/treatment settings. Assessment and Treatment of the DWI Offender provides practical treatment approaches such that will help you manage client resistance and incorporate family members and significant others into the treatment process to more effectively treat offenders.Assessment and Treatment of the DWI Offender examines: the important variables that separate DWI offenders from alcoholics in general, as well as the “normal” population patterns of drinking behavior among offenders the magnitude of the DWI problem in the United States the history of the DWI countermeasures movement prevention and public education organizations such as SADD, MADD, the Partners in Progress program, the College Binge Drinking Initiative, and more enforcement techniques like breath testing, standardized field sobriety tests, on-site drug detection devices, etc. problems with the tools and techniques that are currently being used to address this issue interviewing techniques that work with DWI offenders more!Intended primarily for counselors, social workers, psychologists, and other professionals who work with DWI offenders and packed with helpful and easy-to-read statistical charts and tables, this book is also essential for graduate students in psychology, social work, chemical dependency, or any of the helping professions.By Donald Self. 1989
The annual economic burden of alcohol abuse in the United States is staggering, yet the alcoholism treatment industry has been…
historically plagued by governmental regulations, moral crusades, advocacy of specific treatment approaches, and a lack of marketing knowledge. Here is the first focused set of research on the marketing of alcoholism treatment services. The authors of this much-needed volume--reputable marketing and research scholars--greatly expand the current base of knowledge concerning the alcohol treatment marketing subdiscipline, including the referral system analyses of market potentials for providers, promotional effort consultation for new providers, and the evolving nature of medical services distribution systems. Through in-depth interviews with treatment providers, referral sources, and former clients of treatment facilities, and in major reviews of literature on the subject, Alcoholism Treatment Marketing presents primary research and general research findings to provide practical marketing implications.Pain and Its Relief Without Addiction will help people in pain understand why their pain is not always adequately relieved,…
as well as help reverse the failure of current medical practice to routinely alleviate pain. As noted by a 1992 publication of the United States Department of Health Services, this devastating trend contributes to unnecessary discomfort, longer recovery periods, and compromised patient outcomes. By reading this book, frustrated physicians and, perhaps more importantly, persons in pain can acquire a better understanding of the nature of pain, its connection to the emotions and psychological state of patients, and the impact particular drugs have on the body; this will facilitate relief from pain among a higher percentage of the population.Opioid analgesics comprise many of the chapters in Pain and Its Relief Without Addiction. Author Barry Stimmel, MD, describes the principles to be followed in prescribing opioid analgesics to relieve pain while maintaining one’s daily activities without any limitation in function. The available opioids are described, and the differences between them are reviewed to allow you--as a physician, health care provider, or even a patient--to gain a better insight into the one(s) to use for both acute and chronic pain states. The point that is emphasized is that dependency on an analgesic to relieve pain is no different than dependency on medications to lower blood pressure, prevent heart attacks, treat diabetes, etc. What should be avoided is “addiction,” a condition where function is impaired rather than enhanced.Pain and Its Relief Without Addiction is a guidebook designed to assist physicians and other health professionals in developing a practical approach to pain management and to give patients a fuller understanding of their pain. You’ll gain specific information about: management of acute and chronic pain pain in children pain and cancer pain and AIDS psychological support of persons in pain theories of pain perception the anatomy of painIn Pain and Its Relief Without Addiction, you’ll learn the basic concepts of drug dependence, tolerance, and withdrawal, the pharmacological actions and side effects of drugs used to provide analgesia, and the fundamental steps to be taken in proper pharmacological treatment of pain. The book produces more effective and more informed communication among physicians, other health professionals, and patients so that together they can achieve better pain relief. As Pain and Its Relief Without Addiction illustrates, it is crucial that both patients and physicians understand clearly the terms describing drug use and the behavioral, biochemical, and cellular concepts underlying dependence, tolerance, and withdrawal. Finally, you will acquire a knowledge of all the potential causes of pain and the appropriate steps for intervention.Medical students, new practitioners, and those wishing to reconsider their approaches to pain management will benefit from the book’s coverage of general principles for pain control, the use of drug combinations to provide the most effective relief, methods for treating pain in different populations (such as the elderly and persons with chronic medical conditions), and alternative options for failed treatment. The scope of Pain and Its Relief Without Addiction reaches from nonprescription medications, such as aspirin, to NSAIDS, like ibuprofen, to narcotic analgesics to stimulants such as amphetamines and caffeine. It is the most comprehensive book available on various drugs, their desired effects and side effects, and their use to alleviate pain.By Sally J Stevens, Harry K Wexler. 1998

People have been using tobacco in a variety of forms for centuries. Remarkably, it was originally seen as something that…
could promote vigor and health. Of course, now we all know that tobacco use causes death and disability in epidemic proportions. If smoking is so bad for us, why in heaven’s name would anyone still smoke?Quite a bit has changed since tobacco first made the transition to a widely available agricultural product. Unfortunately, the general clinical approach to addressing this problem has failed to keep pace with tobacco technology and its addictive properties. People around the world who have fallen prey to the subtleties of nicotine addiction, or who care for those who have, would benefit from a deeper understanding of the ways in which nicotine can affect the brain’s function and change behaviors over a lifetime. Why People Smoke breaks down the science of tobacco dependence and presents it in a way that is both easily understandable and clinically useful for anyone interested in helping people break free of nicotine’s influence. Why People Smoke is a first-of-its-kind clinical guide to treating tobacco dependence. The book helps readers make meaningful connections between tobacco’s effects at the cellular level, the predictable behavioral manifestations of the disorder, and the social science and systems requirements required to make a fundamental impact on this disorder. Unlike previous publications like self-help books, step-by-step curricula, or clinical guidelines, Why People Smoke puts practical clinical insights—gained from twenty-five years of practice—into perspective, helping the reader understand how “brain change” translates into “mind change” and the persistent compulsion to smoke . . . despite a person’s desperate desire to stop.Reading Why People Smoke will change the way you see smoking forever.By Karen Kingston. 2017

Prioritizes survivors of abuse by reexamining Christian ideals about suffering and salvation More than half of women and almost one…
in three of men in the United States have experienced sexual violence at some time in their lives. Yet our Christian tradition has failed survivors of sexual violence, who have been taught to believe that traumatic suffering brings us closer to God. Incarnating Grace attempts to save our broken ways of talking about God’s grace by unearthing liberating resources buried in the Christian tradition.Christian ideas about salvation have historically contributed to sexual violence in our communities by reinforcing the idea that suffering is salvific. But a God worth worshiping does not want human beings to suffer. Drawing on the sixteenth-century Spanish mystic Teresa of Avila as well as contemporary political and feminist theologians, philosophers, and legal scholars, author and Associate Professor of theology Julia Feder offers an account of Christian salvation as mystical-political.Feder begins by describing the breadth of traumatic wounding and the shape of traumatic recovery, as articulated by psychologists. Since the fullness of post-traumatic healing requires reserves deeper than those which can be articulated by the secular field of psychology alone, the book then introduces the Spanish Carmelite Saint Teresa of Avila and her theological insights, which are most helpful for constructing a post-traumatic theology of healing. Arguing that God stands against violence and suffering, the book also examines the notion of “senseless suffering,” a technical term that comes from Edward Schillebeeckx, a Catholic twentieth-century Flemish priest and theologian. The suffering of sexual violence serves no higher purpose or greater human value and pushes against all ways of making sense of the world as good and orderly. In the following chapters, Feder turns to two Christian virtues that animate post-traumatic recovery, courage and hope, and explores how Christian hope can provide a language to empower courageous activity undertaken toward healing.Incarnating Grace opens a new dialogue about salvation and violence that does not allow evil to have the last word.By Olivia Roberts. 2023

This book examines the contemporary one-size-fits-all model of treatment for sexual offenders and challenges the confrontational approach to working with…
this group. In recent years, the incidence of people (predominantly men) getting arrested for inappropriate online usage has increased exponentially. This book attempts to understand why this is the case and what can be done to help these individuals and, in turn, reduce the risk of them re-offending. A stand-alone follow-up text from Hudson-Allez’s popular Infant Losses, Adult Searches, this book carries forward the compelling case study of Gordon from the previous text. Throughout his journey from arrest to rehabilitation, the chapters provide insight into the relationship between internet offending and dysfunctional attachments and neurodiversity. Our current understandings of childhood trauma, transgenerational transmission, and diagnoses of autism spectrum disorder and ADHD are all investigated in relation to cases of online offenders and practical therapeutic models are presented. This book is relevant to psychologists, psychotherapists, counsellors and therapists working with forensic clients, and probation officers, social workers and police officers working within child-protection agencies.
