By Aurélia Blanc. 2018
Children of Divorce: Developmental and Clinical Issues

By Leighton Whitaker, Jeffrey Pollard. 1994
This timely book shows how the rapidly increasing phenomenon of violence in the U.S. is invading college and university campuses.…
Campus Violence shows what colleges, universities, and other schools can do to deconstruct the violence culture and begin to educate for a better society. The chapters assist educators in determining the nature of both external and internal violence and what to do about it. Readers will benefit from the experiences of many institutions of higher learning as communicated by various outstanding contributors to this book. By becoming sharply aware of the issues and solutions, administrators may engage in better, more realistic long-range planning, as well as get help for the myriad daily questions and problems inherent to running today’s campuses. As a whole, the book is devoted to highlighting important kinds, causes, and cures of violence destructive to living and learning opportunities. The contributors address the full range of issues from conceptualization to practical ways of handling violent behaviors. Section I: Addresses the broadest, most far-reaching views of campus violence: the conceptualization of campus violence, administration perspectives, the destructive concoction of alcohol and other drugs and morbidity, and the commercial promotion of mindless violence. Section II: Addresses specific kinds of violence. Section III: Focuses on the most frequent immediate perpetrators--male college students--and how their behavior can be dealt with and improved. Section IV: Focuses very specifically on how the college counselor or psychotherapist can be a consultant to staff and faculty in regard to disruptive students.Campus Violence depicts the need to nurture and develop atmospheres for learning, respect, and constructive action--arguably the most pressing topic in education today. Counselors, therapists, security officers, deans, and presidents can begin to counter the rapidly increasing phenomenon of violence in American colleges and universities and cultivate a positive leadership atmosphere. The implications of the contributing authors reach to the primary and secondary schools in our nation--the training grounds for college life and education--and provoke some questions which begin to create a better learning environment.Sis, Don't Settle: How to Stay Smart in Matters of the Heart

By Sharon Taberski. 2000
Enter Sharon Taberski's classroom and enter a world where children take pride, take risks, and most of all, take reading…
seriously. It's not a utopia by any means; Sharon deals with the same issues other teachers face: limited resources, tremendous diversity, and the constant threat of overcrowding. What makes her exceptional is her clear vision. She is systematic in her thinking, and wise in her decision-making. Most of all, she understands her role as a teacher and goals for each student. This is why Sharon is on solid ground. In her book, Sharon shares what she's gained in her twenty years of working with children and teachers. It's organized not around a set of prescribed skills, but around a series of interconnected interactions with the learner: Assessment: Sharon begins by describing her procedures for assessing children's reading and then using what she finds to inform her work. She covers scheduling and managing reading conferences, taking oral-reading records, and using retellings and discussions as tools. Demonstration: Once she has identified strengths and needs, Sharon demonstrates strategies to help her students become better readers. In this section, she explains how she uses shared reading and read aloud as platforms for figuring out words and comprehending texts, explores small-group work - guided reading and word-study groups - and teaches children one one-on-one. Practice: Here, Sharon describes how she uses independent reading as a time for practice, spelling out the very active roles she and her students play. She also devotes a complete chapter to matching children with books for independent reading. Response: It's important for students to know they're doing well and where they must concentrate their efforts. Sharon explains how her students use writing and dialogue as tools to better understanding themselves as readers. On Solid Ground is informed by current thinking, yet loaded with advice, booklists, ready-to-use reproducibles, and - of course - the words and work of real children. Sharon's approach is clear, sensible, timeless. You'll turn to her book throughout your career.Pequeños grandes talentos: Cómo reconocer y potenciar las virtudes de tus hij@s

By Penny Mackieson, Penny Zagarelou-Mackiesonn. 2023
All I' ve ever wanted is the deep sense of belonging associated with knowing and being connected with who and…
where I' ve come from.Penny Zagarelou-Mackieson always knew she was adopted. But she didn' t know she was swapped at birth. After a lifetime grappling with issues of identity and belonging, outlined in her earlier book Adoption Deception, Penny discovered that her natural mother, according to her adoption records, is genetically unrelated to her. Penny' s family reunion of two decades was based on falsehoods. Her ancestry is Greek, not Celtic-Anglo as she was led to believe. So begins Penny' s new quest to learn about her origins. She confronts a shocking legacy of babies misidentified in the heyday of Australia' s forced and closed adoptions and appalling medical record-keeping – meaning many adoptees may never know their true origins.Penny' s quest leads her to court seeking legal recognition of her true identity, involving her ‘ de-adoption' – termination of the Adoption Order imposed on her in infancy. This remarkable story of one woman' s determination to uncover the truth and restore her dignity reveals human rights violations inherent in adoption. Penny questions continuing laws and practices that cement stigmatising secrecy and harm adopted people, arguing for wide-reaching reforms. We share Penny' s rollercoaster of emotions as facts are revealed, court orders made, records sought and corrected, and travel planned and thwarted. We see Penny persist in the face of numerous hurdles and learn about those who help her. This inspiring, heartfelt book is gripping to read and impossible to ignore.“ it is neither logical nor fair that the natural identity and name of a child adopted in Victoria is legally cancelled and replaced with fictitious kin relationships years before they are in a position to make an informed choice about their preferred identity and the ramifications for their descendants.”Transitions to Parenthood

By Joan D Atwood, Frank Genovese. 2006
Provide effective counseling to members of single-parent familiesWith more than half of all first marriages ending in divorce, it&’s time…
to re-think the notion that divorce means failure. Therapy with Single Parents focuses on the strengths of the single-parent family rather than its weaknesses, stressing the need to look at the socially constructed norms, values, and definitions associated with marriage and family in order to provide effective counseling. This unique book examines experiences that are common to single parents and presents interventive strategies for treating single-parent family issues, drawing on clinical case studies to provide technical knowledge in everyday language.Current research shows that single parents account for 27 percent of family households that include children under 18 and that the number of single mothers in the United States more than tripled between 1970 and 2000. Therapy with Single Parents challenges outdated notions that the single-parent family is somehow deficient and associated with adjustment problems in children. It doesn&’t ignore the anger, pain, sadness, and guilt experienced by many members of single parent families but offers therapeutic considerations from a more balanced approach. The book examines the social, psychological, and sexual experiences of newly single parents and addresses the ups and downs they&’ll face in dealing with schools, the workplace, and social services. Therapy with Single Parents examines: social and psychological differences between divorce and widowhood cognitive-behavioral principles of single-parent families what children can learn from divorce dealing with the ghosts of past relationships relationship rules dealing with adult children and extended families the effect of change in divorcing families the feminization of poverty the therapeutic value of social networksTherapy with Single Parents is an invaluable resource for psychologists, professional counselors, social workers, and marriage and family therapists. The book presents a thorough, in-depth examination of the single-parent family system as a viable, healthy family form.Risk and Resilience: Adolescent Mothers and Their Children Grow Up
By Thomas L. Whitman, Keri Weed, Jaelyn R. Farris, John G. Borkowski, Shannon S. Carothers, Deborah A. Keogh. 2007
In 1984, a longitudinal study was launched at the University of Notre Dame to evaluate the social and psychological consequences…
of teenage parenting. Interwoven Lives: Adolescent Mothers and Their Children (2001) described, in detail, the development of these adolescent mothers and their children across the first eight years of life. Major delays were first noticed in children's patterns of attachment at age 1 and their IQ and personal adjustment scores at age 3. By age 8, school-related problems were found in 70% of the children. With these data as the backdrop, this companion volume, Risk and Resilience, identifies major risk factors associated with long-term developmental delays as well as the processes that led to resilience in some of the mothers and children. This new volume traces the children's development at ages 8, 10, and 14. The editors focus on identifying risk and protective factors associated with important life course trajectories as the mothers entered early adulthood and their children became adolescents. Relatively unexplored protective factors - such as religiosity, patterns of father involvement, and romantic relationships - were found to positively influence development for both teenage mothers and their children. This new text also addresses: New methodological approaches with an emphasis on the use of hierarchical linear and structural equation modeling and dynamical systems analyses Implications for prevention and intervention programs Intellectual, educational, and socioemotional outcome data The "dark side" of rearing children in poverty The multiple risks related to adolescent parenting and their profound impact on children's development How resilience emerges in children's lives and the specific factors that promote it. Risk and Resilience appeals to researchers in developmental psychology and family processes as well as agency and government professionals charged with public policy and service delivery. The Methods and Methodologies of Qualitative Family Research
By Marvin B Sussman, Janet F Gilgun. 1997
The Methods and Methodologies of Qualitative Family Research can provide you with a strong conceptual framework for undertaking qualitative research.…
As it explores inquiry and theory on the cutting edge, it shows how qualitative methodologies can be applied to family life, education, and research. Designed to demonstrate how emerging and established methodologies can advance the understanding of families and direct social change, this book is a major step in assessing the development, progress, and contributions of qualitative inquiry. Packed with useful information and innovative approaches, this volume pulls together a rich and diverse group of essays that teach readers about the complexities and challenges of qualitative research. Most importantly, you’ll learn how new qualitative approaches are grounded in systems thinking, holistic formulations, attention to context, cultural sensitivity, and nonlinear dynamics. The Methods and Methodologies of Qualitative Family Research is distinct from other books of its kind because it acknowledges the agent, or self, in compiling data and reaching conclusions. Moreover, it analyzes how studying the world affects those doing the studying and how those effects, in turn, play a substantial role in interpreting data and forming conclusions. The Methods and Methodologies of Qualitative Family Research introduces three major types of qualitative clinical family research: conversational analysis, recursive frame analysis, and hermeneutic phenomenology. It exposes a wide array of resources for undertaking qualitative inquiry, including data journals, letters, official files, clinical case notes, folk tales, interviews, and field observations. You’ll learn how these resources are invaluable tools for understanding: couples’decisionmaking generative fathering reflexivity the use of historical data to construct composite cases egalitarianism and oppression in marriage perceptions of gender, race, and class among African-American adolescent women successful aging among individuals who require long-term care poverty and access to servicesA skillful blend of theory and practice, The Methods and Methodologies of Qualitative Family Research offers conceptual schemes, bibliographies, and other useful resources for teaching and conducting qualitative research. It will revolutionize the way you think about qualitative inquiry and your own approaches to qualitative family research. In addition, you’ll come away updated on the current state of qualitative research and with new skills and techniques for tackling your own research. The Handbook of Sexuality in Close Relationships
By Amy Wenzel, Susan Sprecher, John H. Harvey. 2005
Although sexuality is an integral part of close romantic relationships, research linking these two constructs has been less systematic than…
other areas pertaining to close relationships. To date, researchers in communication, sociology, family studies, psychology, and psychiatry, have made significant advances in both of these fields. The editors' goal is to integrate this research into one volume. They bring together major scholars from the diversity of fields working on close relationship topics to examine past contributions and new directions in sexuality. The emphasis is on theoretical integration and stimulation, methodological rigor, and critical analysis. This volume explores:*early sexual experiences and their impact on late life sexuality;*how life's stresses impact sexuality and satisfaction with closeness;*the affect of postpartum depression on sexuality; and*the relationship between control, power, anger, as well as revenge and sexual processes in couples. The Handbook of Sexuality in Close Relationships is intended for students and researchers in the disciplines of social, clinical, developmental, and health psychology; family studies; counseling; and interpersonal, family, and health communication. An excellent reference in advanced courses in close relationships taught in psychology, communications, sociology, anthropology, and family studies, the material in Part V will also appeal to clinical psychologists, health professionals, and policymakers.Family Relationships in the Early Years

By Lauren Slater. 2000
"The beauty of Lauren Slater's prose is shocking," said Newsday about Welcome to My Country, and now, in this powerful…
and provocative new book, Slater brilliantly explores a mind, a body, and a life under siege. Diag-nosed as a child with a strange illness, brought up in a family given to fantasy and ambition, Lauren Slater developed seizures, auras, neurological disturbances--and an ability to lie. In Lying: A Metaphorical Memoir, Slater blends a coming-of-age story with an electrifying exploration of the nature of truth, and of whether it is ever possible to tell--or to know--the facts about a self, a human being, a life. Lying chronicles the doctors, the tests, the seizures, the family embarrassments, even as it explores a sensitive child's illness as both metaphor and a means of attention-getting--a human being's susceptibility to malady, and to storytelling as an act of healing and as part of the quest for love. This mesmerizing memoir openly questions the reliability of memoir itself, the trickiness of the mind in perceiving reality, the slippery nature of illness and diagnosis--the shifting perceptions and images of who we are and what, for God's sake, is the matter with us. In Lying, Lauren Slater forces us to redraw the boundary between what we know as fact and what we believe we create as fiction. Here a young woman discovers not only what plagues her but also what heals her--the birth of sensuality, her creativity as an artist--in a book that reaffirms how a fine writer can reveal what is common to us all in the course of telling her own unique story. About Welcome to My Country, the San Francisco Chronicle said, "Every page brims with beautifully rendered images of thoughts, feelings, emotional states." The same can be said about Lying: A Metaphorical Memoir.Tranquilos, libres y felices: 70 actividades para cada día en casa, en la escuela y de vacaciones
