A National Crime: The Canadian Government and the Residential School System
By John S. Milloy. 2011
“I am going to tell you how we are treated. I am always hungry.” — Edward B., a student at…
Onion Lake School (1923) "[I]f I were appointed by the Dominion Government for the express purpose of spreading tuberculosis, there is nothing finer in existance that the average Indian residential school.” — N. Walker, Indian Affairs Superintendent (1948) For over 100 years, thousands of Aboriginal children passed through the Canadian residential school system. Begun in the 1870s, it was intended, in the words of government officials, to bring these children into the “circle of civilization,” the results, however, were far different. More often, the schools provided an inferior education in an atmosphere of neglect, disease, and often abuse. Using previously unreleased government documents, historian John S. Milloy provides a full picture of the history and reality of the residential school system. He begins by tracing the ideological roots of the system, and follows the paper trail of internal memoranda, reports from field inspectors, and letters of complaint. In the early decades, the system grew without planning or restraint. Despite numerous critical commissions and reports, it persisted into the 1970s, when it transformed itself into a social welfare system without improving conditions for its thousands of wards. A National Crime shows that the residential system was chronically underfunded and often mismanaged, and documents in detail and how this affected the health, education, and well-being of entire generations of Aboriginal children.Clean Cuisine

By Brett Hoebel. 2015
Less time. More results. It seems like diet and fitness experts keep upping the ante--asking us to push ourselves harder…
than ever to get results. From cleansing and fasting to extreme, time-consuming workouts--since when did getting healthy become a full-time job? From his days as a trainer on The Biggest Loser, Brett Hoebel knows firsthand the struggles people face when it comes to weight loss--including lack of time. In The 20-Minute Body, he shares a revolutionary plan for weight loss based on the latest science of fitness, which shows us that the most effective way to burn fat and lose inches is to have a well-rounded diet and work out in short, efficient bursts.Brett identifies the biggest myths surrounding weight loss. First, that the best way to work out is to log lots of cardio hours. False. Recent studies prove that long cardio workouts are not effective: short sessions of high-intensity exercise burn more fat and build more muscle. When you train this way, you build metabolic muscle--lean muscle mass that helps your body burn calories even at rest. Metabolic muscle is the secret to a fast metabolism.Brett also debunks the myth that counting calories and cutting carbohydrates are effective ways to lose weight. Super-restrictive, low-calorie diets backfire and actually cause the body to store fat, not burn it. And carbs? Contrary to what most people think, carbs aren't evil. In fact, they are your body's favorite source of energy. It's not about giving up carbs--it's about choosing the right ones. With three different diet and fitness levels, a variety of high-intensity workouts, and delicious recipes that take 20 minutes or less to prepare, The 20-Minute Body is a full lifestyle plan for getting healthy and losing weight. Give Brett 20 days, and he will give you back your body--minus 20 inches. The Hormone Reset Diet
By Dr Sara Gottfried. 2015
The New York Times bestselling author of The Hormone Cure shows you how to reset your metabolic hormones to lose…
weight and feel great in just twenty-one days! What we've been taught about dieting is all wrong. Weight loss isn't about restricting calories and willpower. It's about hormones: the chemical molecules that govern nearly all aspects of your body fat, from how much you store and where it's stored, to cravings, appetite, gut bacteria, and even addictive eating patterns. Being overweight is the result of major hormonal misfires involving seven metabolic hormones--estrogen, insulin, leptin, cortisol, thyroid, growth hormone, and testosterone--each of which is affected by the foods you consume every day. When these hormones misfire, your body adjusts by changing their levels, a fluctuation that ultimately slows down the metabolism, causing you to store fat every time you eat instead of using it as fuel to energize you. When your metabolism is broken, you get fatter no matter what you do--especially after age forty--and can eventually develop insulin resistance, diabetes, heart disease, and even dementia. The good news is that you can turn this problem around in only twenty-one days. Based on leading scientific research, The Hormone Reset Diet is Dr. Gottfried's proven step-by-step plan designed to help women of all shapes and sizes, ages, and ethnicities lose weight and feel lighter and more energetic. In seven three-day bursts, you'll make specific dietary changes, eliminating metabolism-wrecking foods--meat and alcohol, sugar, fruit, caffeine, grain, dairy, and toxins--to repair your body and reset your hormones. At the end of twenty-one days, Dr. Gottfried shows you how to develop a new personalized food code that enables you to look and feel your best every single day. In addition, this highly practical guide explores the emotional issues that drive cravings, addictions, and habits, offering insights to quench incessant hunger and get your life back. With The Hormone Reset Diet, you can finally shed the weight, feel trim and sexy, restore your hormones and health, and rediscover the body you want.25Days: A Proven Program to Rewire Your Brain, Stop Weight Gain, and Finally Crush the Habits You Hate--Forever
By Myatt Murphy, Drew Logan. 2017
Celebrity trainer and cast member of NBC’s Strong, Drew Logan shows us how to rewrite our neurological patterns and break…
the habits that prevent us from losing weight and living a healthy life. What if we could train our brains to stop weight gain in our quest to be lean, healthy, and fit? Well, we can. Celebrity trainer and cast member of NBC’s Strong, Drew Logan knows firsthand how the brain affects our ability to perform and function at our best. After dying three times in three hours—becoming the world’s only known medical case to survive three sudden cardiac arrests—he lost his short-term memory. He could no longer follow the complicated diet and fitness regimens he’d used on himself and his clients. He needed to create something simpler. He was shocked to discover that the resulting program was even more effective than his complicated regime of the past. In 25 Days, Drew outlines a unique, multifaceted approach that helps readers rewrite their neurological patterning—what lies underneath those pesky habits that get in our way over and over again—so that the brain’s neural pathways, biochemistry, and hormones work together effectively, seamlessly, and efficiently. He defines what neurological patterns are, how they form, and the reason they’re secretly behind why most people fail to lose weight and get in shape. He breaks down these “unhealthy” patterns and shows how to erase them by creating healthier ones with diet, exercise, and a reward system. Included in the book are the 25 Days Grading System, Diet, and Workout Plan, as well as tools that will alert and assist readers throughout the book. 25 Days is one of the easiest—and effective—diets to follow, and Drew will show you that all you need is to adjust your diet and retrain your brain to be in peak shape.Commerce by a Frozen Sea
By Frank D. Lewis, Ann M. Carlos. 2010
Commerce by a Frozen Sea is a cross-cultural study of a century of contact between North American native peoples and…
Europeans. During the eighteenth century, the natives of the Hudson Bay lowlands and their European trading partners were brought together by an increasingly popular trade in furs, destined for the hat and fur markets of Europe. Native Americans were the sole trappers of furs, which they traded to English and French merchants. The trade gave Native Americans access to new European technologies that were integrated into Indian lifeways. What emerges from this detailed exploration is a story of two equal partners involved in a mutually beneficial trade.Drawing on more than seventy years of trade records from the archives of the Hudson's Bay Company, economic historians Ann M. Carlos and Frank D. Lewis critique and confront many of the myths commonly held about the nature and impact of commercial trade. Extensively documented are the ways in which natives transformed the trading environment and determined the range of goods offered to them. Natives were effective bargainers who demanded practical items such as firearms, kettles, and blankets as well as luxuries like cloth, jewelry, and tobacco--goods similar to those purchased by Europeans. Surprisingly little alcohol was traded. Indeed, Commerce by a Frozen Sea shows that natives were industrious people who achieved a standard of living above that of most workers in Europe. Although they later fell behind, the eighteenth century was, for Native Americans, a golden age.Bite-sized snacks packed with delicious flavors and healthy fats! By Alan Watts. 2000
A fervent, lifelong student of Zen, Alan Watts shows us that it is both an experience -- a singular, powerful…
moment of realization -- and a simple way of life, with an awareness that affects every moment of every day. Adopted by mainstream America in a way that carries only a vague association of its roots in Zen Buddhism, Alan Watts makes it clear that any exploration of Zen must understand and embrace its roots as a form of Buddhist practice derived from its Chinese and East Indian sources. Examining the background of Zen in East Indian religion, Watts shows us its evolution through the religion of China. Zen is a synthesis of the contemplative insight of Indian religion and the dynamic liveliness of Taoism as they came together in the pragmatic, practical environment of Confucian China. Watts gives us great insight into the living moment of satori and the release of nirvana, as well as the methods of meditation that are current today, and the influence of Zen culturally in the arts of painting and pottery.French Women Don't Get Fat
By Mireille Guiliano. 2005
Stylish, convincing, wise, funny–and just in time: the ultimatenon-diet book, which could radically change the way you think and live.…
French women don’t get fat, but they do eat bread and pastry, drink wine, and regularly enjoy three-course meals. In her delightful tale, Mireille Guiliano unlocks the simple secrets of this “French paradox”–how to enjoy food and stay slim and healthy. Hers is a charming, sensible, and powerfully life-affirming view of health and eating for our times. As a typically slender French girl, Mireille (Meer-ray) went to America as an exchange student and came back fat. That shock sent her into an adolescent tailspin, until her kindly family physician, “Dr. Miracle,” came to the rescue. Reintroducing her to classic principles of French gastronomy plus time-honored secrets of the local women, he helped her restore her shape and gave her a whole new understanding of food, drink, and life. The key? Not guilt or deprivation but learning to get the most from the things you most enjoy. Following her own version of this traditional wisdom, she has ever since relished a life of indulgence without bulge, satisfying yen without yo-yo on three meals a day. Now in simple but potent strategies and dozens of recipes you’d swear were fattening, Mireille reveals the ingredients for a lifetime of weight control–from the emergency weekend remedy of Magical Leek Soup to everyday tricks like fooling yourself into contentment and painless new physical exertions to save you from the StairMaster. Emphasizing the virtues of freshness, variety, balance, andalwayspleasure, Mireille shows how virtually anyone can learn to eat, drink, and move like a French woman. A natural raconteur, Mireille illustrates her philosophy through the experiences that have shaped her life–a six-year-old’s first taste of Champagne, treks in search of tiny blueberries (calledmyrtilles) in the woods near her grandmother’s house, a near-spiritual rendezvous with oysters at a seaside restaurant in Brittany, to name but a few. She also shows us other women discovering the wonders of “French in action,” drawing examples from dozens of friends and associates she has advised over the years to eat and drink smarter and more joyfully. Here are a culture’s most cherished and time-honored secrets recast for the twenty-first century. For anyone who has slipped out of her zone, missed the flight to South Beach, or accidentally let a carb pass her lips, here is a buoyant, positive way to stay trim. A life of wine, bread–even chocolate–without girth or guilt?Pourquoi pas?Genius Foods: Become Smarter, Happier, and More Productive While Protecting Your Brain for Life

By Henry Mittwer. 1992
This Zen flower arranging book teaches the delicate art of Japanese Chabana--the precursor to ikebana.Up to now, with the exception…
of Okakura Kakuzo's excellent account of flowers used in the art of Chanoyu in his delightful The Book of Tea, almost nothing has been available on the subject. To my knowledge, the present volume is the only book written in English that is wholly devoted to the special form of flower arrangement called Chabana.Chabana is a type of flower arrangement that originated in the tea room . Chabana is not only for decoration, for symbolic representation, or for abstract expression of the self. 2,500years ago, Chabana has something in common with one of Shakyamuni Buddha's sermons. Buddha lightly picked a single bloom from a basketful of flowers offered to Him by one of the multitude who came to hear His sermon. Buddha slowly, silently, held up the flower before the congregation. Among the gathering was one of His disciples, Mahakasyapa, who gently smiled as he apprehended the Buddha's gesture. Chabana may not be a flower arrangement having a Zen-like mission, but it certainly is a flower arrangement appreciated by a mind nourished with the Zen principles of simplicity and directness.
