By Jess Kimball Leslie. 2017
I Love My Computer Because My Friends Live in It is tech analyst Jess Kimball Leslie's hilarious, frank homage to…
the technology that contributed so significantly to the person she is today. From accounts of the lawless chat rooms of early AOL to the perpetual high school reunions that are modern-day Facebook and Instagram, her essays paint a clear picture: That all of us have a much more twisted, meaningful, emotional relationship with the online world than we realize or let on. Coming of age in suburban Connecticut in the late '80s and early '90s, Jess looked to the nascent Internet to find the tribes she couldn't find IRL: fellow Bette Midler fans; women who seemed impossibly sure of their sexuality; people who worked with computers every day as part of their actual jobs without being ridiculed as nerds. It's in large part because of her embrace of an online life that Jess is where she is now, happily married, with a wife, son, and dog, and making a living of analyzing Internet trends and forecasting the future of tech. She bets most people would credit technology for many of their successes, too, if they could only shed the notion that it's as a mind-numbing drug on which we're all overdosing. The Post-Nup Solution: How to Save a Marriage in Crisis—Or End It Fairly
By Tom Gardiner. 2017
Having trouble in your marriage? This book is for you. Tom Gardiner, a Chicago lawyer, explains how post-nuptial agreements can…
address marital problems effectively. Unlike counseling that often is no more than a temporary fix, this book talks about agreements that will result in long-term change. If your spouse drinks too much, for instance, you both agree in a legally binding document about the changes that need to occur—and the consequences if they don't. There is another huge advantage to post-nups. If the behavior is not changed and divorce is triggered, the terms were set when the parties were both seeking to save the marriage—not when they're going through an acrimonious break-up. These terms are usually reasonable and fair—who gets the kids and when, a fair amount of alimony for a fair term, division of the property—all because the spouses are seeking a solution at the time. This book covers the human frailties that can cause problems in a marriage: financial problems, drinking, drug use, cheating, blended families, in-law problems, inheritance, religious issues and so on. It is a book not just for couples, but for therapists, religious leaders and others who seek to make marriages stronger and divorces civilized and fair. The Whole Grain Promise: More Than 100 Recipes to Jumpstart a Healthier Diet

By John M. Caher, Judith S. Kaye, Louis Grumet. 2016
Twenty years ago, in the middle of the night and on the last day of the legislative session, the New…
York State Legislature created a publicly funded school district to cater to the interests of a religious sect called the Satmar, an insular group of Hasidic Jews that objects to, among other things, female school bus drivers. The rapidly growing sect had bought land in rural Upstate New York, populated it solely with members of its faction, and created a village called Kiryas Joel that exerted extraordinary political pressure over both political parties. Marking the first time in American history that a governmental unit was established for a religious group, the legislature's action prompted years of litigation that eventually went to the US Supreme Court. As today's Supreme Court signals its willingness to view a religious viewpoint like any other speech and accord it equal protection, the 1994 case, Board of Education of Kiryas Joel Village School District v. Grumet, stands as the most important legal precedent in the fight to uphold the separation of church and state. In The Curious Case of Kiryas Joel, plaintiff Louis Grumet opens a window onto the Satmar Hasidic community, where language, customs, and dress have led to estrangement from and clashes with neighboring communities, and details the inside story of his fight for the First Amendment and against New York's most powerful politicians.Informed by numerous interviews with key figures such as Governor George Pataki, media accounts, court transcripts, and more, The Curious Case of Kiryas Joel not only tantalizes with a peek at cynical power politics driven by votes and Supreme Court justice squabbling and negotiation; it also provides an important demonstration of how a small, insular, and politically savvy religious group can grasp legal and political power. This story—a blend of politics, religion, cultural clashes, and constitutional tension—is an object lesson in the ongoing debate over freedom of versus freedom from religion.I Wish I Hadn t Eaten That is a book for those of you who despite your best efforts…

By Phyllis Chesler. 2011
Updated and revised with seven new chapters, a new introduction, and a new resources section, this landmark book is invaluable…
for women facing a custody battle. It was the first to break the myth that mothers receive preferential treatment over fathers in custody disputes. Although mothers generally retain custody when fathers choose not to fight for it, fathers who seek custody often win--not because the mother is unfit or the father has been the primary caregiver but because, as Phyllis Chesler argues, women are held to a much higher standard of parenting. Incorporating findings from years of research, hundreds of interviews, and international surveys about child-custody arrangements, Chesler argues for new guidelines to resolve custody disputes and to prevent the continued oppression of mothers in custody situations. This book provides a philosophical and psychological perspective as well as practical advice from one of the country's leading matrimonial lawyers. Both an indictment of a discriminatory system and a call to action over motherhood under siege, Mothers on Trial is essential reading for anyone concerned either personally or professionally with custody rights and the well-being of the children involved.Arrested: What to Do When Your Loved One's in Jail

By Michael Amherst. 2017
Using bisexuality as a frame, Go the Way Your Blood Beats questions the division of sexuality into straight and gay,…
in a timely exploration of the complex histories and psychologies of human desire. A challenge to the idea that sexuality can either ever be fully known or neatly categorised, it is a meditation on desire’s unknowability. Interwoven with anonymous addresses to past loves - the sex of whom remain obscure - the book demonstrates the universalism of desire, while at the same time the particularity of each individual act of desiring. Part essay, part memoir, part love letter, Go the Way Your Blood Beats asks us to see desire and sexuality as analogous with art - a mysterious, creative force, and one that remakes us in the act itself.Stefan Gates on E Numbers
By Stefan Gates. 2010
'Stefan Gates on E Numbers' is a myth-busting celebration of 'E's--the additives and preservatives that make up Britain's most feared…
ingredients. Most of the food we eat has them yet we are hugely suspicious of them and believe that they cause everything from twitchy eyelids to colon cancer. In this book Stefan discusses just how bad our food would taste, how wrong it would look and how potentially lethal it would be if we didn't have E numbers. You may not realize that many of the finest foods on the planet (including caviar, fine hams and wines) rely on E's. And if you think nature is good and Es are bad, you'd be wrong: the natural world is awash with dangerous toxins (apples contain cyanide, potatoes contain toxic solanine), yet E number substances make up 99.99% of every breath you take. Stefan analyzes all 319 Es approved for use in food and also talks about labelling issues (how to understand them), how much you can safely eat and what, if anything, is wrong with cheap food. He also investigates the scare stories, allergies and potential downsides of the multi-billion pound food industry. If you don't like Es you don't have to eat them but you should make that choice based on facs not fear. Without E numbers we would not have supermarkets. Without this book you cannot make an informed decision about what you are buying and eating.Dieta Páleo para perda de peso rápida

as a red-green politics within the context of capitalist globalisation. By Hannes Kuch, Paulus Kaufmann, Christian Neuhaeuser. 2010
Degradation, dehumanization, instrumentalization, humiliation, and nonrecognition - these concepts point to ways in which we understand human beings to be…
violated in their dignity. Violations of human dignity are brought about by concrete practices and conditions; some commonly acknowledged, such as torture and rape, and others more contested, such as poverty and exclusion. This volume collates reflections on such concepts and a range of practices, deepening our understanding of human dignity and its violation, bringing to the surface interrelationships and commonalities, and pointing to the values that are thereby shown to be in danger. In presenting a streamlined discussion from a negative perspective, complemented by conclusions for a positive account of human dignity, the book is at once a contribution to the body of literature on what dignity is and how it should be protected as well as constituting an alternative, fresh and focused perspective relevant to this significant recurring debate. As the concept of human dignity itself crosses disciplinary boundaries, this is mirrored in the unique range of perspectives brought by the book's European and American contributors - in philosophy and ethics, law, human rights, literature, cultural studies and interdisciplinary research. This volume will be of interest to social and moral philosophers, legal and human rights theorists, practitioners and students.Accidentally Overweight: The 9 Elements That Will Help You Solve Your Weight-Loss Puzzle

By Hans Born, Jürgen Rüland, Maria-Gabriela Manea. 2011
This volume seeks to explain why democratization and military reforms stagnate in newly democratizing countries. The contributions blend historical, ideational,…
cultural and structural explanatory factors to analyze the trajectories of military reform in Indonesia and Nigeria, two major regional powers that share many structural commonalities. In the tradition of the literature on security sector reform (SSR), the book not only scrutinizes executive initiatives toward military reform, but also provides ample coverage of societal actors. Findings show that while military reform is stagnating in both countries, societal forces ought to be taken into account more as major driving forces in explaining military reform. Several chapters study how legislatures, non-governmental organizations and the civilian defence epistemic community contribute to the transformation of military institutions. The last part of the book tackles another aspect rarely studied in the literature on military reform, namely, the role of militias in military reform.
