a headless corpse on the rocks below the cliffs on the Isle of Wight is only the beginning of a journey for DI Joe Faraday. It's a journey which takes him right to the heart of the grim trade in human cargo from the crippled societies of the Balkans. From cheap labour to prostitution, Portsmouth, like every other city in the UK is home to untold human misery; a black economy built on illegal immigration. Joe Faraday is determined to find the real criminals that lie behind the tabloid hysteria.DC Paul Winter on the other hand is determined only to find a way out of the disciplinary action that threatens his entire career. A burgeoning relationship with a young prostitute isn't exactly helping his cause. And for Winter, it's beginning to look as if time is running out...Why readers love Graham Hurley:'There is no one writing better police procedurals today.' on the Trump campaign in 2016 to assuming top positions in the administration as White House press secretary and communications director, while at the same time acting as First Lady Melania Trump’s communications director and eventually chief of staff. Few members of the Trump inner circle served longer or were as close to the first family as Stephanie Grisham, and few had her unique insight into the turbulent four years of the administration, especially the personalities behind the headlines.By Bentley Little. 2015
CompWare is in serious trouble after a promised merger falls through, so they do what other businesses have done to…
bolster their public image: they hire a consulting firm to review and streamline their business practices. But there's something strange about the firm they hire--more specifically, the quirky gentleman who arrives to supervise the project: Mr. Patoff, tall and thin and wearing a bow tie, and with an odd smile that never quite reaches his eyes. In his first interactions, the consultant asks a few inappropriate questions, and generally seems a nuisance. Over time, Patoff gains more power, to the point where he seems to be running the whole company. He enacts arbitrary and invasive changes to office protocol. He places cameras all over the building, making workers paranoid; he calls employees at all hours of the night, visits some of their homes and menaces their families. People who defy the consultant get fired or worse. They soon realize they're not just fighting for their jobs: They're fighting for their lives. The Consultant is a biting workplace satire, with the horrific touches only Bentley Little could provide.By Bentley Little. 2006

desert, waiting for night to fall and a reign of terror to begin... Brad Woods had performed a lot of autopsies, but never one like this. The body was purged of all blood. And something told Brad this was only the beginning of a nightmare. Fear made Sue Wing run from the darkened school that night, fear she could only name in the Cantonese her grandmother; Cup-hu-girngsi... corpse-who-drinks-blood... Vampires. The Devil, incarnate, stalking the streets of Rio Verde. Small-town reporters like Rich Carter didn't believe in such things. But he would come to believe with a faith borne of horror after horror...By Baynard Kendrick. 1957

buddy, Captain Duncan MacLain, to help her get to the bottom of the mystery of what happened. But the plot thickens, when the FBI is called in and several more people end up dead. Is Captain Duncan on the list next? Will this be the end for the blind detective? Or can he with the help of Cappo his chauffeur, and his two German Shepherd dogs, Driest, his police dog, and Schnuck his Seeing Eye Dog, triumph in the end?By Baynard Kendrick. 1954
A gloomy New York mansion... a safe with a braille combination... an oil tycoon with a family sharper than a…
serpent’s tooth... these ingredients contribute to one of the most baffling cases of Duncan Maclain's career. The minute the man stepped into Captain Maclain's penthouse office, the blind Captain sensed he was a phony. His highly trained senses of touch, of smell, of hearing, told him that. To satisfy his own awakened curiosity, Maclain agreed to the man’s preposterous suggestion, and from then on things happened fast. This time Maclain is more dependent on Dreist , his deadly police dog, than Schnucke, his gentle Seeing-Eye companion.By Baynard Kendrick. 1943

And when he shoots up Broadway with his own gun, last seen two years ago just before a General in the U. S. Army was shot, it is much more likely he'll be booked for murder... That's what happened to a young hero from the war in Korea, despite his protestations of innocence, and his account of what happened. And that's when Duncan Maclain stepped into the picture... Maclain not only believed the soldier's story, but followed leads to Hardesty's Health Farm, rich man's cure-all on the Hudson, where, it seemed, you diet today, you die tomorrow!By Tamera Alexander. 2012

Shafarevich's Basic Algebraic Geometry has been a classic and universally used introduction to the subject since its first appearance over…
40 years ago. As the translator writes in a prefatory note, ``For all [advanced undergraduate and beginning graduate] students, and for the many specialists in other branches of math who need a liberal education in algebraic geometry, Shafarevich's book is a must.'' The second volume is in two parts: Book II is a gentle cultural introduction to scheme theory, with the first aim of putting abstract algebraic varieties on a firm foundation; a second aim is to introduce Hilbert schemes and moduli spaces, that serve as parameter spaces for other geometric constructions. Book III discusses complex manifolds and their relation with algebraic varieties, Kähler geometry and Hodge theory. The final section raises an important problem in uniformising higher dimensional varieties that has been widely studied as the ``Shafarevich conjecture''. The style of Basic Algebraic Geometry 2 and its minimal prerequisites make it to a large extent independent of Basic Algebraic Geometry 1, and accessible to beginning graduate students in mathematics and in theoretical physics.By Laura Dave. 2006
Three years ago, Emmy Everett made the painful decision to call off her engagement and leave New York City behind.…
Since then she has been hiding out in Rhode Island working at a bait and tackle shop and haphazardly shooting a documentary about fishermens wives. July 4th weekend has rolled around again and Emmy is mustering up the courage to return home to New York (the site of her own failed romance) to celebrate her brother Joshs wedding. En route to his bachelor party, Emmy is shocked when her typically resolute brother confesses that he is having serious doubts about getting married - and he may even be in love with another woman. Emmy is determined to help her brother face up to this decision - the one she fled from herself. With less than twenty-four hours to go before the wedding, she takes Josh on a road trip to find this mystery woman. Along the way, Emmy embraces her own hard-earned lessons about romance, commitment and what happens when we refuse to let go of the past.By Stefania Centrone. 2010
Logic and Philosophy of Mathematics in the Early Husserl focuses on the first ten years of Edmund Husserl’s work, from…
the publication of his Philosophy of Arithmetic (1891) to that of his Logical Investigations (1900/01), and aims to precisely locate his early work in the fields of logic, philosophy of logic and philosophy of mathematics. Unlike most phenomenologists, the author refrains from reading Husserl’s early work as a more or less immature sketch of claims consolidated only in his later phenomenology, and unlike the majority of historians of logic she emphasizes the systematic strength and the originality of Husserl’s logico-mathematical work. The book attempts to reconstruct the discussion between Husserl and those philosophers and mathematicians who contributed to new developments in logic, such as Leibniz, Bolzano, the logical algebraists (especially Boole and Schröder), Frege, and Hilbert and his school. It presents both a comprehensive critical examination of some of the major works produced by Husserl and his antagonists in the last decade of the 19th century and a formal reconstruction of many texts from Husserl’s Nachlaß that have not yet been the object of systematical scrutiny. This volume will be of particular interest to researchers working in the history, and in the philosophy, of logic and mathematics, and more generally, to analytical philosophers and phenomenologists with a background in standard logic.By Raimund Mannhold, Gerd Folkers, Hugo Kubinyi. 2011
Chemokines are hormone-like signaling molecules secreted by cells to signal infection and guide the immune response. Following a decade of…
basic chemokine research, the pharmaceutical industry has now begun to exploit this crucial signaling pathway for the development of innovative drugs against AIDS, cancer, neural and autoimmune diseases. Here is the first reference focusing on these novel drug development opportunities. Opening with a general introduction on chemokine function and chemokine receptor biology, the second part covers the known implications of these signaling molecules in human diseases, such as cancer, neural disorders, and viral infection, including AIDS. The third part systematically surveys current drug development efforts at targeting individual chemokine receptors, as well as other chemokine interaction partners, including up-to-date reports from the pharmaceutical industry.By David Baguley, Don McFerran, Laurence McKenna. 2021
'This book offers real hope' David Stockdale, CEO, British Tinnitus AssociationTinnitus can be a difficult and distressing condition to manage,…
and many people with tinnitus are currently left to fend for themselves.Misophonia is an increasingly recognized, and equally distressing, condition which is likewise often overlooked by the medical profession, despite the acute anxiety it generates in those experiencing it. However, prospects for recovery have never been better, based on recent advances in psychology, auditory neuroscience and medicine. Because tinnitus, hyperacusis and misophonia present very differently and idiosyncratically from individual to individual, self-help techniques can often be effective in minimizing the distress caused by these disorders, which can range from lack of sleep and irritability, to loss of concentration and confidence. The latest edition of Living with Tinnitus and Hyperacusis looks at strategies for living with tinnitus, hyperacusis and misophonia, and includes a complete programme for recovery. It features the latest research from the fields of psychology, neuroscience and medicine to offer a full overview of the causes, impact, and most effective treatments available. It has practical advice on relaxation and sound therapy as well as insights into relieving the stress of auditory conditions.By Steve Connolly. 2022
