By Robert Grosse. 1989
Multinational enterprises are particularly strong in Latin America and sensitive to political and economic changes there - the currently emerging…
debt crisis is likely to have far-ranging effects. This book considers multinationals in Latin America, both those from inside and those from outside the region, and discusses the major issues relating to them, e.g. trans-national regulation and the government/business relationships. It sets the discussions against the background of other work and theories of multinational enterprise. Novel features include the development of the author's bargaining theory of multinational enterprise and the attempt to create a systematic method for evaluating MNE acceptability for host governments (an important consideration since the relationship between multinationals and governments, particularly the way a government perceives a multinational, is crucial). The book concludes by assessing current trends and likely future developments.First published in 1990, the goal of these two volumes is to help fill the gap between theory and experiment…

By Martin L. Parry. 1990
Originally published in 1990, this book analysed the sensitivity of the world food system and looked at the variety of…
ways in which it would be affected by climate change. It describes the effects of climate change on agriculture, estimates the impacts on plant and animal growth and looks at the geographical limits to different types of farming. It also considers the range of possible ways to adapt agriculture and so to mitigate the disastrous consequences of climate change.Animal Brucellosis

technology, now in limited use, which will replace the conventional methodology in the near future. The volume covers research done on improved diagnostic techniques, vaccines, taxonomy, epidemiology, pathology, and basic immunology. It is an important literature review for those more established in this field and serves as a guide to researchers or diagnosticians becoming involved with this disease.Urbanization in Post-Apartheid South Africa (Routledge Library Editions: Urbanization #9)

Originally published in 1990, Urbanization in Post-Apartheid South Africa examines the democratic future of South Africa in the context of…
policy options and constraints. The book looks at the issue of South Africa’s future including access to land and housing, marked regional differences in well-being, large peri-urban settlements arising around all major towns, and racial inequalities in access to farming land. The book will be of interest to students of urbanization, geography, economics and planning and African studies.Invertebrate Cell System Applications: Volume I
By Jun Mitsuhashi. 1989
A useful reference for those using or interested in cultured invertebrate cells, this two-volume text provides information about techniques and…
advances in invertebrate tissue culture. Cell lines for Insecta, Crustacea, Mollusca, and Nematoda are introduces along with their characterizations. Developments in insect biotechnology, including foreign protein production by insect cells infected with recombinant virus are described. Fundamental studies for introducing foreign genes into cultured insect cells is also presented. Wide information on studies -at cellular levels-on pathogens of insects, plants, and vertebrates is given.Safety Design Criteria for Industrial Plants: Volume 2 (Routledge Revivals)
By Maurizio Cumo, Antonio Naviglio. 1989
First published in 1989: A generalization and rationalization of the main safety design criteria and safety analysis methodologies developed in…
nuclear aerospace and chemical engineering is presented in two comprehensive volumes. The concepts of risk, damage and probability of hazardous events are introduced. Risks connected with the use of main harmful substances are quantitatively identified. The methods employed for the safety analyses are described, together with the methodologies for seismic analyses and for Probabilistic Risk Assessment. The main criteria for protection of plants from internal and external events are introduced and described. In addition, the problem of emergency planning is considered. This book is particularly intended for engineers working in the nuclear field, in chemical industries, in industrial plants, in fuel storages and with high-risk substances, as well as for engineers operating in licensing organizations and for inspectors.Engineering Economics of Alternative Energy Sources

By Sukh Dev. 1989
A compilation of all the known information on terpenoids specifically triterpenoids, is presented in these volumes. The most important available…
information on a particular compound is discussed, such as its isolation/occurence, available spectral data, and leading references on structural determination. Additionally, triterpenoids synthesis, biosynthesis, proven pharmacological properties, and any known applications are explained. A comprehensive general introduction has been included which surveys the development of triterpenoid chemistry from the beginning to the present. Extremely helpful is the selected list of references to books and reviews dealing with various aspects of triterpenoid chemistry.Private Agriculture in the Soviet Union (Routledge Library Editions: Agriculture #15)
By Stefan Hedlund. 1989
First published in 1989. Perestroika, it was widely believed, must succeed in agriculture before permanent change could be affected elsewhere…
in the Soviet economy. But Soviet agriculture had so far remained stubbornly inefficient and resistant to change. In this book Stefan Hedlund investigates the reasons for this state of affairs. The author gives an account of the emergence, development and performance of private agriculture in the Soviet Union. In particular he describes the essentials of the peculiarly Soviet hybrid of private and socialized agriculture. He places the private sector within the broader framework of Soviet agriculture. He saw Soviet agriculture as a ‘Black Hole’, ready to absorb any resources that came near, be they private plots, urban gardens, factory workshops or military units. Hedlund also examines the impact on the peasants as producers of decades of negative ideological pronouncements in Party propaganda, and of discrimination and at times outright harassment by local officials. He points out that this background makes the prospect of any positive response from the peasants to Gorbachev’s call for perestroika in agriculture extremely unlikely.Intracellular Calcium-Dependent Proteolysis
By Ronald L. Mellgren. 1990
Intracellular Calcium-Dependent Proteolysis explains what is now known about calpains, which are intracellular, non-lysosomal enzymes involved in intracellular protein catabolism.…
The book provides a comprehensive overview of topics ranging from the molecular biology of the calpains and their specific inhibitor protein (calpastatin) to physiologic and pathologic consequences of the presence of this proteolytic system in many model cells and tissues. Several theoretical functions of the calpains are discussed, including their potential roles in muscle protein turnover, platelet activation, membrane fusion, and synaptic plasticity. Intracellular Calcium-Dependent Proteolysis is a valuable source of information for researchers and students interested in the regulation of intracellular protein catabolism and the general effects of Ca2+ on cell function.Cell Intercommunication

The text concludes with a synthetic view of the role of gap junctions and potential implications to cardiology, oncology, and other areas of pathology. This volume is important to professionals in pharmacology, physiology, biochemistry, biomedical science, pathobiology, pathology, molecular genetics, toxicology and human development.Bioaccumulation of Xenobiotic Compounds
By Des W. Connell. 1989

outlines the principles governing the accumulation of chemicals from the environment by organisms. Packed with tables and diagrams, this work reviews the experimental data available on both terrestrial and aquatic systems. It describes methods which are used to predict bioaccumulation of chemicals from their physicochemical properties. It also reviews environmental and other factors influencing bioaccumulation. This text also includes previously unpublished theoretical explanations of several bioaccumulation processes, including food chain biomagnification. Information in this exceptional volume is useful to government officials involved with environmental management, chemists, biologists, consultants working with chemical waste control, researchers, and graduate students.Safe Drinking Water Act (CRC Press Revivals)
