By Anthony Barnett, Jenny Grice. 2016
In the past few decades a revolution in our approach to treating type 2 diabetes has occurred following the recognition…
that the condition is caused by multiple defects. A range of new treatments are now available, with many more forthcoming, utilising differing mechanisms of action that allow targeted and more effective therapy of this multifactorial disease than ever before. The increasing requirement in the UK to move much of diabetes practice into the community requires much more detailed knowledge of the condition by GPs and practice nurses. In this bespoke book, the authors aim to show how new mechanisms of glucose control and advances in treatments arising from this can tailor treatment to the individual in primary care. This book incorporates the recently published ADA/EASD guidelines and the 2015 update from the National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence (NICE). Essential reading for the multi-professional diabetes care team, this book should also be of interest to hospital specialists in training.Point-of-care Glucose Detection for Diabetic Monitoring and Management

This book has been written to help you understand your diagnosis so you can manage and live well with your diabetes for as long as possible. Every aspect of your life with diabetes is covered - from diet, sex and exercise to mood changes, managing blood glucose levels and physical complications arising from the condition. Dr Val Wilson draws on four decades of personal and professional experience to help readers deal with their diagnosis, consider how it will affect their relationships and lifestyle, with advice on DAFNE for Type 1 diabetics and ways that Type 2 diabetes can eventually be reversed. Real-life case studies show other people's experiences of diabetes-related issues that you might also be dealing with.Around 700 people each day are diagnosed with diabetes - that's the equivalent of one every two minutes. In January 2016, Diabetes UK announced that four million people in Britain now have diabetes of one form or another. This is the only book they need to help self-manage the condition.Primary Care Nutrition: Writing the Nutrition Prescription
By David Heber, Zhaoping Li. 2017
This book contains the necessary knowledge and tools to incorporate nutrition into primary care practice. As a practical matter, this…
effort is led by a dedicated primary care physician with the help of motivated registered dietitians, nurses, psychologists, physical therapists, and office staff whether within a known practice or by referral to the community. It is essential that the nutrition prescription provided by the physician be as efficient as possible. While many team members have superior knowledge in the areas of nutrition, exercise, and psychology, the health practitioner remains the focus of patient confidence in a therapy plan. Therefore, the endorsement of the plan rather than the implementation of the plan is the most important task of the physician. This book proposes a significant change in attitude of primary health care providers in terms of the power of nutrition in prevention and treatment of common disease. It features detailed and referenced information on the role of nutrition in the most common conditions encountered in primary care practice. In the past, treatment focused primarily on drugs and surgery for the treatment of disease with nutrition as an afterthought. Advanced technologies and drugs are effective for the treatment of acute disease, but many of the most common diseases such as heart disease, diabetes, and cancer are not preventable with drugs and surgery. While there is mention of prevention of heart disease, this largely relates to the use of statins with some modest discussion of a healthy diet. Similarly, prevention of type 2 diabetes is the early introduction of metformin or intensive insulin therapy.Nutrition and Cardiometabolic Health

In this book, Nutrition and Cardiometabolic Health, international experts present state-of-the-art scholarly reviews of dietary and lifestyle effects on metabolic systems associated with cardiovascular health and disease. It covers a broad range of topics including biological and behavioral processes regulating food intake; lifestyle and surgical approaches to weight loss; nutritional considerations for optimal cardiometabolic health across the lifespan; the relationship of macronutrients, whole foods and dietary patterns to diabetes and cardiovascular disease; and diet as a modulator of gene expression, epigenetics and the gut microbiome and the relationship of these traits to disorders of metabolism. By Alfonso Troisi. 2020
This book offers a step-by-step guide to mental health assessment for bariatric surgery patients. A general introduction explains the concepts…
of bariatric psychology and psychiatry, their relevance in contemporary bariatric surgery, and reasons to include psychologists and psychiatrists in multidisciplinary teams taking care of bariatric patients. The following four chapters address the aspects of mental health that are investigated by bariatric psychology. The psychological processes analyzed here play a major role in influencing patients’ perception of the outcomes of bariatric surgery and in determining their commitment to lifestyle changes and follow-up programs. The second part of the book includes nine chapters addressing the clinical conditions relevant to bariatric psychiatry. For each condition, the major focus is on the impact of psychopathology on bariatric surgery outcomes (weight loss, weight regain, quality of life) and the impact of surgery on its course (remission, worsening, de novo onset). Each chapter in this part includes a discussion of the diagnostic instruments (i.e., structured interviews, clinician-rated tests, and patient-rated tests) that should be used to obtain a valid assessment of the patient’s mental status. Separate chapters focus on psychiatric complications (e.g., suicide and addiction transfer) and psychological problems related to quality of life (e.g., body image dissatisfaction) that may emerge postoperatively. Data on these postsurgery conditions has been reported only recently and, therefore, no published book deals with them. The final chapter offers an overview of unsolved issues in bariatric psychology and psychiatry and reviews emerging research findings that are likely to change assessment and care of bariatric patients’ mental health in the near future. Given its scope—and its wealth of tables, diagrams, mnemonics, and key fact boxes—the book will be an invaluable reference tool for clinicians.
