in the Argentine province of Tucumán described their home as the &“Poisoned Eden,&” a play on its official title, &“Garden of the Republic.&” Cholera elicited fear and panic in the nineteenth century, and although the disease never had the demographic impact of tuberculosis, malaria, or influenza, cholera was a source of consternation that often illuminated dormant social problems. In Poisoned Eden Carlos S. Dimas analyzes the social, political, and cultural effects of three epidemics, in 1868, 1886, and 1895, that shook the northwestern province of Tucumán to understand the role of public health in building the Argentine state in the late nineteenth century. Through a reading of medical and ethnographic material, Dimas shows that cholera became intertwined in all areas of the social fabric and that Tucumanos of all classes created public health services that expanded the state&’s presence in the interior. In each outbreak, provincial powers contended with how to ensure the province&’s autonomy while simultaneously meeting the needs of the state to eradicate cholera. Centering disease, Poisoned Eden demonstrates how public health and debates on cholera&’s contagion became a central concern of the nineteenth-century Latin American state and promoted national cohesion.Cobalt: The Making of a Mining Superpower
By Charlie Angus. 2022
The world is desperate for cobalt. It drives the proliferation of digital and clean technologies. But this “demon metal” has…
a horrific present and a troubled history. The modern search for cobalt has brought investors back to a small town in Northern Canada, a place called Cobalt. Like the demon metal, this town has a dark and turbulent history. The tale of the early-twentieth-century mining rush at Cobalt has been told as a settler’s adventure, but Indigenous people had already been trading in metals from the region for two thousand years. And the events that happened here — the theft of Indigenous lands, the exploitation of a multicultural workforce, and the destruction of the natural environment — established a template for resource extraction that has been exported around the world. Charlie Angus reframes the complex and intersectional history of Cobalt within a broader international frame — from the conquistadores to the Western gold rush to the struggles in the Democratic Republic of Congo today. He demonstrates how Cobalt set Canada on its path to become the world’s dominant mining superpower.Breast Cancer: Comprehensive Management

on diagnosing disease and chronic illness using the patient’s personal energy fields as the launchpad for treatment. An individual’s energy is often overlooked when treating difficult to identify disease. Dr. Nathan puts forth the premise that patient evaluation should be highly personal, beginning with a thorough analysis of events leading up to sickness, including lingering mental trauma. To do this, he urges medical professionals to use a process called Energetic Intuition—the ability to utilize pattern recognition presented by our own subconscious. In this book, Dr. Nathan details how he taps into his own intuition and learns to trust both himself and what the patient’s physical and mental state tell him. Dr. Nathan’s personal experience and years using this methodology has helped hundreds of patients understand their ailments and a find balance that helps them achieve optimal health. Energetic Diagnosis also features a robust detailing of how human energy is measured and perceived in a clinical setting using specific medical devices, interference fields and various autonomic response testing. Dr. Nathan invites guest doctors to detail the kinds of energy-focused treatments they use in their practices, such as A.R.T. (autonomic response testing), Kinesiology, and FSM (frequency specific microcurrents). Dr. Nathan concludes with important energetic considerations to open and build our awareness for a total, mind, body soul experience. He reveals the importance of dreams, native healing, communication with the natural world. What was the longest and harshest medical quarantine in modern history, and how did people survive it? In Hawaiʻi beginning…
in 1866, men, women, and children suspected of having leprosy were removed from their families. Most were sentenced over the next century to lifelong exile at an isolated settlement. Thousands of photographs taken of their skin provided forceful, if conflicting, evidence of disease and disability for colonial health agents. And yet among these exiled people, a competing knowledge system of kinship and collectivity emerged during their incarceration. This book shows how they pieced together their own intimate archives of care and companionship through unanticipated adaptations of photography.Gould's Pathophysiology For The Health Professions

By Ashani T. Weeraratna. 2021
How can new understandings about cancer cell interactions help doctors better control, and eventually cure, cancer?Cancer is a formidable enemy.…
In fact, people born in America since 1960 face a one in two chance of being diagnosed with cancer in their lifetimes. However, there's growing evidence that fewer cancers will be death sentences for patients. New approaches and understandings are transforming the medical world, increasing success rates for remissions, disease management, and cures. Dr. Ashani Weeraratna is at the forefront of this new level of care. In Is Cancer Inevitable?, Weeraratna—a pioneering melanoma researcher whose work explores the role aging plays in cancer cells' spread and drug resistance—gives readers an inside look at several of the latest cancer advances. Detailing the actions that are reducing the disease's impact and exploring what the future may hold, she explains how the molecular mechanisms involved in metastasis and the cells' microenvironments influence cancer's development and progression. Over the years, she writes, our understanding of how cancer cells move throughout the body, change as they plant themselves in the body's microenvironments, and even communicate with one another have led to major insights about how cancer works. With compelling detail, she takes us inside her lab, revealing how new insights are leading to major breakthroughs, even among patients with Stage IV cancer. She also explains how age-related changes in the microenvironment contribute to multiple aspects of melanoma formation and development. Such scholarship, she argues, is moving us toward a day when more patients will be declared cancer-free. How can we work together to understand the rise of obesity and reverse its related diseases and societal impacts?Obesity is…
a complex condition that increases a person's risk for developing diabetes, heart disease, cancer, dementia, and other life-threatening conditions. Contrary to prevailing notions that it results solely from a person's diet and exercise failings, a predisposition to obesity is actually determined by genetics as well as by environmental and socioeconomic factors that lie beyond individual control. In Can the Obesity Crisis Be Reversed?, Dr. Rexford Ahima draws on his extensive laboratory and clinical experiences at top institutions to examine the complicated causes of obesity, as well as the most cutting-edge approaches for prevention and treatment. Ahima looks at how the rising trends of obesity and associated diseases are driving up health care costs.
