"Implementing Evidence-Based Practices for Treatment of Alcohol and Drug Disorders" provides managers and clinicians with results from Practice Improvement Collaboratives…
(PIC) that demonstrate how substance abuse treatment can be improved by increasing the exchange of knowledge between community-based service providers and the research community. The book examines improvement collaboratives and mentoring strategies for adopting and using evidence-based practices. Contributors address how to determine the best treatment processes to serve clients, how to deal with the hurdles faced in preparing and training counsellors, and how to affect the needed changes in agency activities. This unique professional resource responds to an Institute of Medicine report that found a substantial disconnect between research and practice in treatment for drug and alcohol dependence. Focusing on how to make the changes necessary to support the adoption and use of evidence-based practices, the book documents the activities of four sites to illustrate how investigators and treatment practitioners worked together to implement evidence-based practices. Contributors examine the development and early implementation of Practice Improvement Collaboratives, the investigator-provider-policymaker model, Motivational Enhancement Therapy, the use of Opinion Leaders in training, and targeted strategies that take into account the differences in clinician demographics and training. "Implementing Evidence-Based Practices for Treatment of Alcohol and Drug Disorders" is an essential tool for alcohol and drug counsellors, directors of alcohol and drug treatment clinics, and instructors in counsellor training and academic programs.By Merrill Singer. 2006

More than two million child abuse reports are filed annually on behalf of children in the United States. Each of…
the reported children becomes a concern, at least temporarily, of the professional who files the report, and each family is assessed by additional professionals. A substantial number of children in these families will subsequently enter foster care. Until now, the relationships between the performance of our child welfare system and the growth and outcomes of foster care have not been understood. In an effort to clarify them, Barth and his colleagues have synthesized the results of their longitudinal study in California of the paths taken by children after the initial abuse report: foster care, a return to their homes, or placement for adoption. Because of the outcomes of child welfare services in California have national significance, this is far more than a regional study. It provides a comprehensive picture of children's experiences in the child welfare system and a gauge of the effectiveness of that system. The policy implications of the California study have bearing on major federal and state initiatives to prevent child abuse and reduce unnecessary foster and group home care.By Annmarie Brogan, Marie Limpert. 2020

The Routledge Handbook of Deradicalisation and Disengagement offers an overview of the historical settings, theoretical debates, national approaches and practical…
strategies to deradicalisation and disengagement. Radicalisation and violent extremism are major global challenges, and as new and violent extremist groups and environments emerge, there is an increasing need for knowledge about how individuals physically exit these movements and how to change their mindset. Historically, much of the focus on these topics has been highly securitised and militarised; by contrast, this volume explores the need for more community-based and ‘soft’ approaches. The handbook includes discussions from both right-wing/left-wing political and religiously inspired deradicalisation processes. The handbook is organised into three parts: 1 definitions, backgrounds and theories; 2 actors; 3 regional case studies. This handbook will be of much interest to students, researchers, scholars and professionals of deradicalisation, counterterrorism, political violence, political extremism, security studies and international relations in general. The one-of-a-kind exploration of effective alcohol prevention and treatment for Latinos-now and for the future!By the year 2020, the Latino…

Boy: My Life in Seven Dogs, a memoir of the transformative power of loving dogs. This is a book about dogs: the love we have for them, and the way that love helps us understand the people we have been. It’s in the love of dogs, and my love for them, that I can best now take the measure of the child I once was, and the bottomless, unfathomable desires that once haunted me.There are times when it is hard for me to fully remember that love, which was once so fragile, and so fierce. Sometimes it seems to fade before me, like breath on a mirror. But I remember the dogs. In her New York Times opinion column, Jennifer Finney Boylan wrote about her relationship with her beloved dog Indigo, and her wise, funny, heartbreaking piece went viral. In Good Boy, Boylan explores what should be the simplest topic in the world, but never is: finding and giving love.Good Boy is a universal account of a remarkable story: showing how a young boy became a middle-aged woman—accompanied at seven crucial moments of growth and transformation by seven memorable dogs. “Everything I know about love,” she writes, “I learned from dogs.” Their love enables us to pull off what seem like impossible feats: to find our way home when we are lost, to live our lives with humor and courage, and above all, to best become our true selves.By Tanya Selvaratnam. 2020
A combination of memoir, reporting, and research, Assume Nothing is an urgent, timely examination of a frightening type of abuse…
of power. It tells Tanya Selvaratnam’s incredible story, while offering tools and solutions for a problem that persists, dangerously, behind the closed bedroom doors of people we know and love. When Tanya met Eric, they fell quickly and effortlessly in love, fueling each other’s growing political ambitions. But their power dynamic soon took a dark turn, as he criticized Tanya and began to try to control her, even telling her that he would have to kill her if they broke up. Sex turned frighteningly violent. At a friend’s urging, she opened up to a domestic violence expert, who confirmed what Tanya, on some level, already knew: she was in an abusive relationship. She considered avenues for protection—an ethics complaint, a civil claim, going to the police. But a situation that would be dire for most women was even more dangerous for Tanya because her abuser was the attorney general of New York—the top law enforcement officer in the state. She feared he would be tipped off and that he would crush her. Tanya’s story is harrowing, but not as rare as you might think. According to the National Coalition Against Domestic Violence, on average, nearly twenty people per minute are physically abused by an intimate partner in the United States. Here Tanya uses her abuse at the hands of former New York State Attorney General Eric Schneiderman to expose the prevalence of intimate partner violence—and offers steps to recognize, expose, and end it.By Judy Barker, Deborah Hodes. 2004

The number of eating disorders patients presenting with symptoms of self-harm is growing quickly, and yet there is surprisingly little…
known about this unique population. Self-Harm Behavior and Eating Disorders explores the prevalent but largely uncharted relationship between self-injury behaviors and eating disorders symptoms. In the first major book to focus on this area, a renowned group of international scholars and practitioners addresses the subject from a variety of theoretical and practical perspectives. The book is categorized into sections covering epidemiology, psychodynamics, assessment, and a final section covering potential treatment options, including dialectical behavioral therapy, cognitive therapy, interventions strategies, group therapy, and pharmacological approaches. This unrivaled collection of case studies, theoretical exploration, and practical application forms a benchmark for the field, and offers a stepping-stone for new research and innovative treatment strategies. In an area with little available information, previously spread out among diffuse sources, this volume represents the state-of-the-field resource for anyone working with complex eating disorders patients.By Don Passman. 2000

Barrie Jean Borich's memoir of her 14-year marriage is a subtle exploration of gender and the intricacies of butch-femme desire.…
My Lesbian Husband describes Borich's attraction to her partner, Linnea, and the slow building of their life together in a decaying neighborhood in Minneapolis. Borich traces both the pleasures and the wrenching difficulties of trying to construct a long-term union in the absence not only of legal and social but of everything that our aunts and uncles and parents take for granted: "names for their union in every language, the weddings of a square-chested prince and a big-busted, cinch-waisted princess at the end of every Disney movie, every Shakespeare comedy, not to Mary and Joseph, Hera and Zeus, and those little bride and groom figurines they have saved from their wedding cakes." This is as sharply observed and well-written a memoir as Jan Clausen's and Oranges, but a valentine rather than a valediction.
