Pour s'arracher à ce cercle vicieux, il sera aidé par une femme, bien sûr, et peut-être par un objet très prosaïque : le parapluie de Bakounine, conservé à Locarno. Dans ce tourbillon de la mémoire, mille scènes, mille histoires rendent ce livre sur la mort extrêmement vivant.Semprun aurait pu se contenter d'écrire des souvenirs, ou un document.
