Attracted to Conflict: Dynamic Foundations Of Destructive Social Relations (Peace Psychology Book Series)
By Peter Coleman, Andrzej Nowak, Larry Liebovitch, Andrea Bartoli, Katharina Kugler, Robin Vallacher, Lan Bui. 2012
Conflict is inherent in virtually every aspect of human relations from sport to parliamentary democracy from fashion in…
the arts to paradigmatic challenges in the sciences and from economic activity to intimate relationships Yet it can become among the most serious social problems humans face when it loses its constructive features and becomes protracted over time with no obvious means of resolution This book addresses the subject of intractable social conflict from a new vantage point Here these types of conflict represent self-organizing phenomena emerging quite naturally from the ongoing dynamics in human interaction at any scale--from the interpersonal to the international Using the universal language and computational framework of nonlinear dynamical systems theory in combination with recent insights from social psychology intractable conflict is understood as a system locked in special attractor states that constrain the thoughts and actions of the parties to the conflict The emergence and maintenance of attractors for conflict can be described by means of formal models that incorporate the results of computer simulations experiments field research and archival analyses Multi-disciplinary research reflecting these approaches provides encouraging support for the dynamical systems perspective Importantly this text presents new views on conflict resolution In contrast to traditional approaches that tend to focus on basic short-lived cause-effect relations the dynamical perspective emphasizes the temporal patterns and potential for emergence in destructive relations Attractor deconstruction entails restoring complexity to a conflict scenario by isolating elements or changing the feedback loops among them The creation of a latent attractor trades on the tendency toward multi-stability in dynamical systems and entails the consolidation of incongruent positive elements into a coherent structure In the bifurcation scenario factors are identified that can change the number and types of attractors in a conflict scenario The implementation of these strategies may hold the key to unlocking intractable conflict creating the potential for constructive social relationsRudiments of Signal Processing and Systems

digital signal processing (DSP) books and signals and systems books on the market. Since most undergraduate courses begin with signals and systems and then move on in later years to DSP, I felt a need to combine the two into one book that was concise yet not too overburdening. This means that students need only purchase one book instead of two and at the same time see the flow of knowledge from one subject into the next. Like the rudiments of music, it starts at the very beginning with some elementary knowledge and builds on it chapter by chapter to advanced work by chapter 15. I have been teaching now for 38 years and always think it necessary to credit the pioneers of the subjects we teach and ask the question “How did we get to this present stage in technological achievement”? Therefore, in Chapter 1 I have given a concise history trying to not sway too much away from the subject area. This is followed by the rudimentary theory in increasing complexity. It has already been taught successfully to a class at Auckland University of Technology New Zealand.Astrophysical Black Holes (Lecture Notes in Physics #905)

to answer the deepest questions about the origin of the universe and changed the course of physics and astronomy forever (Newsday). In southern California, nearly a half century ago, a small band of researchers — equipped with a new 200-inch telescope and a faith born of scientific optimism — embarked on the greatest intellectual adventure in the history of humankind: the search for the origin and fate of the universe. Their quest would eventually engulf all of physics and astronomy, leading not only to the discovery of quasars, black holes, and shadow matter but also to fame, controversy, and Nobel Prizes. Lonely Hearts of the Cosmos tells the story of the men and women who have taken eternity on their shoulders and stormed nature in search of answers to the deepest questions we know to ask."Written with such wit and verve that it is hard not to zip through in one sitting." —Washington PostIntroducing Microsoft Quantum Computing for Developers: Using the Quantum Development Kit and Q#

ions and atomic and molecular targets. It was realized that quantum mechanics is the only way, a priori, to describe such atomic phenomena. However, since quantum mechanics is very difficult to apply for collision systems with more than two particles, classical methods were very soon introduced and applied to simple collision systems and, subsequently, to more complicated systems. The results obtained by such classical methods were found to be surprisingly good, and classical mechanics is now well established, despite its approximations, as a replacement for or competition with quantum mechanics in many cases. In this book, the author will focus on the development of classical methods for describing collisional and post-collisional processes. The results will be compared with those found using quantum mechanical models, in order to demonstrate the ability of the classical approach to obtain many features and details of collision systems.AQA GCSE (9-1) Physics Student Book

boundary Lagrangian-Eulerian formulation. Single and two-phase viscous incompressible fluid flows are considered with the increasing complexity of structures ranging from rigid-body, linear elastic and nonlinear large deformation to fully-coupled flexible multibody system. This book is unique with regard to computational modeling of such complex fluid-structure interaction problems at high Reynolds numbers, whereby various coupling techniques are introduced and systematically discussed. The techniques are demonstrated for large-scale practical problems in aerospace and marine/offshore engineering. This book also provides a comprehensive understanding of underlying unsteady physics and coupled mechanical aspects of the fluid-structure interaction from a computational point of view. Using the body-fitted and moving mesh formulations, the physical insights associated with structure-to-fluid mass ratios (i.e., added mass effects), Reynolds number, large structural deformation, free surface, and other interacting physical fields are covered. The book includes the basic tools necessary to build the concepts required for modeling such coupled fluid-structure interaction problems, thus exposing the reader to advanced topics of multiphysics and multiscale phenomena.Solved Problems for Transient Electrical Circuits (Lecture Notes in Electrical Engineering #809)

semiconductor devices areas. NBTI continues to remain as an important reliability issue for CMOS transistors and circuits. Development of NBTI resilient technology relies on utilizing suitable stress conditions, artifact free measurements and accurate physics-based models for the reliable determination of degradation at end-of-life, as well as understanding the process, material and device architectural impacts. This book discusses: Ultra-fast measurements and modelling of parametric drift due to NBTI in different transistor architectures: planar bulk and FDSOI p-MOSFETs, p-FinFETs and GAA-SNS p-FETs, with Silicon and Silicon Germanium channels. BTI Analysis Tool (BAT), a comprehensive physics-based framework, to model the measured time kinetics of parametric drift during and after DC and AC stress, at different stress and recovery biases and temperature, as well as pulse duty cycle and frequency. The Reaction Diffusion (RD) model is used for generated interface traps, Transient Trap Occupancy Model (TTOM) for charge occupancy of the generated interface traps and their contribution, Activated Barrier Double Well Thermionic (ABDWT) model for hole trapping in pre-existing bulk gate insulator traps, and Reaction Diffusion Drift (RDD) model for bulk trap generation in the BAT framework; NBTI parametric drift is due to uncorrelated contributions from the trap generation (interface, bulk) and trapping processes. Analysis and modelling of Nitrogen incorporation into the gate insulator, Germanium incorporation into the channel, and mechanical stress effects due to changes in the transistor layout or device dimensions; similarities and differences of (100) surface dominated planar and GAA MOSFETs and (110) sidewall dominated FinFETs are analysed. This book describes the life and times of fifty-three great British scientists and engineers – male and female inventive geniuses…
who changed the world, improving the lives of mankind, and propelling humanity forward. Their stories abound with personal ingenuity, brilliance and scientific or engineering wizardry, and with the ambition to satisfy fundamental human needs. The author aspires to set these individual achievements in the socio-political context of their place in history, sometimes embracing the activities of others to round off the story and scientific contribution. Avoiding overly technical language, he nonetheless succeeds in making complex theories and technologies more comprehensible and accessible to a lay audience. This book is a must for all those interested in the prehistory and history of the steam engine, transport, communication technology, public health services, and many topics from the natural sciences. Many of the inventions described in its pages have helped shape the modern world.Anti-Differentiation and the Calculation of Feynman Amplitudes (Texts & Monographs in Symbolic Computation)

Germany, in October 2020, and a few additional invited reviews. The book aims at comprehensive surveys and new innovative results of the analytic integration methods of Feynman integrals in quantum field theory. These methods are closely related to the field of special functions and their function spaces, the theory of differential equations and summation theory. Almost all of these algorithms have a strong basis in computer algebra. The solution of the corresponding problems are connected to the analytic management of large data in the range of Giga- to Terabytes. The methods are widely applicable to quite a series of other branches of mathematics and theoretical physics.Eye-Tracking with Python and Pylink
By Zhiguo Wang. 2021
Several Python programming books feature tools designed for experimental psychologists. What sets this book apart is its focus on eye-tracking.Eye-tracking…
is a widely used research technique in psychology and neuroscience labs. Research grade eye-trackers are typically faster, more accurate, and of course, more expensive than the ones seen in consumer goods or usability labs. Not surprisingly, a successful eye-tracking study usually requires sophisticated computer programming. Easy syntax and flexibility make Python a perfect choice for this task, especially for psychology researchers with little or no computer programming experience. This book offers detailed coverage of the Pylink library, a Python interface for the gold standard EyeLink ® eye-trackers, with many step-by-step example scripts. This book is a useful reference for eye-tracking researchers, but you can also use it as a textbook for graduate-level programming courses. This book presents a recasting of Aristotle s theory of spatial displacement of inanimate objects Aristotle s…
claim that projectiles are actively carried by the media through which they move such as air or water is well known and has drawn the attention of commentators from ancient to modern times What is lacking however is a systematic investigation of the consequences of his suggestion that the medium always acts as the direct instrument of locomotion be it natural or forced while original movers e g stone throwers catapults bowstrings act indirectly by impressing moving force into the medium Filling this gap and guided by discussions in Aristotle s Physics and On the Heavens the present volume shows that Aristotle s active medium enables his theory - in which force is proportional to speed - to account for a large class of phenomena that Newtonian dynamics - in which force is proportional to acceleration - accounts for through the concept of inertia By applying Aristotle s medium dynamics to projectile flight and to collisions that involve reversal of motion the book provides detailed examples of the efficacy and coherence that the active medium gives to Aristotle s discussions The book is directed primarily to historians of ancient medieval and early modern science to philosophers of science and to students of Aristotle s natural philosophyHandbook of Magnetism and Magnetic Materials

By Xin He, Paul Beckett, Ranjith R Unnithan. 2021
This book presents how metasurfaces are exploited to develop new low-cost single sensor based multispectral cameras. Multispectral cameras extend the…
concept of conventional colour cameras to capture images with multiple color bands and with narrow spectral passbands. Images from a multispectral camera can extract significant amount of additional information that the human eye or a normal camera fails to capture and thus have important applications in precision agriculture, forestry, medicine, object identifications, and classifications. Conventional multispectral cameras are made up of multiple image sensors each externally fitted with a narrow passband wavelength filters, optics and multiple electronics. The need for multiple sensors for each band results in a number of problems such as being bulky, power hungry and suffering from image co-registration problems which in turn limits their wide usage. The above problems can be eliminated if a multispectral camera is developed using one single image sensor. This monograph introduces an exact model for a critical spin chain with arbitrary spin S, which includes the Haldane--Shastry model…
as the special case S=1/2. While spinons in the Haldane-Shastry model obey abelian half-fermi statistics, the spinons in the general model introduced here obey non-abelian statistics. This manifests itself through topological choices for the fractional momentum spacings. The general model is derived by mapping exact models of quantized Hall states onto spin chains. The book begins with pedagogical review of all the relevant models including the non-abelian statistics in the Pfaffian Hall state, and is understandable to every student with a graduate course in quantum mechanics. The 50 Year Anniversary of the development of electron counting paradigms for polyhedral molecules is celebrated in two volumes of…
