In this fun and informative YA Non-fiction title, Dustin Hansen, author of Game On!, a self-confessed video game addict with…
over 20-years experience in the gaming industry, examines the storytelling skills shown in some of the most beloved and moving games of all time.We all know that video games are fun, but can a video game make you cry? Can it tell you a powerful love story? Can a video game make you think differently about war? About the environment? About the choices you make?Whether it's playing through blockbuster-esque adventures (Uncharted, God of War, The Last of Us), diving deep into hidden bits of story and lore (Red Dead Redemption II, Bioshock, Journey) or building relationships that change the fate of the world itself (Persona 5, Undertale), video games are bringing stories to life in ways that are immediate, interactive and immersive. Focusing on some of the best, most memorable, experiences in gaming, The Greatest Stories Ever Played, examines the relationship between gaming and storytelling in a new way.By Javier Muñoz-Basols, Rodrigo Cacho Casal, Caroline Egan. 2022
The Routledge Hispanic Studies Companion to Early Modern Spanish Literature and Culture introduces the intellectual and artistic breadth of early…
modern Spain from a range of disciplinary and critical perspectives. Spanning the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries (a period traditionally known as the Golden Age), the volume examines topics including political and scientific culture, literary and artistic innovations, and religious and social identities and institutions in transformation. The 36 chapters of the volume include both expert overviews of key topics and figures from the period as well as new approaches to understudied questions and materials. This invaluable resource will be of interest to advanced students and scholars in Hispanic studies, as well as Renaissance and early modern studies more generally.
By Julie Miller, Molly O'Neill, Nancy Hyde. 2018

enlightened approach grounded in the fundamentals of classroom experience in Beginning and Intermediate Algebra 5e. The text reflects the compassion and insight of its experienced author team with features developed to address the specific needs of developmental level students. Throughout the text, the authors communicate to students the very points their instructors are likely to make during lecture, and this helps to reinforce the concepts and provide instruction that leads students to mastery and success. Also included are Problem Recognition Exercises, designed to help students recognize which solution strategies are most appropriate for a given exercise. These types of exercises, along with the number of practice problems and group activities available, permit instructors to choose from a wealth of problems, allowing ample opportunity for students to practice what they learn in lecture to hone their skills. In this way, the book perfectly complements any learning platform, whether traditional lecture or distance-learning; its instruction is so reflective of what comes from lecture, that students will feel as comfortable outside of class as they do inside class with their instructor.By Birgit Blättel-Mink, Katrin Späte, Torsten Noack, Corinna Onnen, Rita Stein-Redent, Michael Opielka. 2022
By Samantha M. Assimilation, Resilience, and Survival illustrates how settler colonialism propelled U.S. government programs designed to assimilate generations of Native children at…
the Stewart Indian School (1890–1980). The school opened in Carson City, Nevada, in 1890 and embraced its mission to destroy the connections between Native children and their lands, isolate them from their families, and divorce them from their cultures and traditions. Newly enrolled students were separated from their families, had their appearances altered, and were forced to speak only English. However, as Samantha M. Williams uncovers, numerous Indigenous students and their families subverted school rules, and tensions arose between federal officials and the local authorities charged with implementing boarding school policies. The first book on the history of the Stewart Indian School, Assimilation, Resilience, and Survival reveals the experiences of generations of Stewart School alumni and their families, often in their own words. Williams demonstrates how Indigenous experiences at the school changed over time and connects these changes with Native American activism and variations in federal policy. Williams&’s research uncovers numerous instances of abuse at Stewart, and Assimilation, Resilience, and Survival addresses both the trauma of the boarding school experience and the resilience of generations of students who persevered there under the most challenging of circumstances. In the wake of the Cold War, a diverse group of U.S. immigrants flocked to Costa Rica, distancing themselves from…
undesirable U.S. policies at home and abroad. Enchanted with Costa Rica&’s natural beauty and lured by the prospect of cheap land, these expatriates—former government employees, businessmen and privileged bourgeois, dissident Quakers and self-seeking hippies, farmers and ecologists—sought a new life in a country that was often dubbed the Switzerland of Central America.Cold War Paradise is a social and cultural history of this little-studied immigration flow. Based on extensive oral histories of these immigrants and their diverse writings, ranging from women&’s club cookbooks to personal letters, Atalia Shragai examines the motivations for immigration, patterns of movement, settlements, and processes of identity-making among U.S. Americans in Costa Rica from post–World War II to the late 1970s. Exploring such diverse themes as gender, nature, and material culture, this study provides a fresh perspective on inter-American relations from the point of view of ordinary U.S. emigrants and settlers. Shragai traces the formation and evolution of a wide range of identifications among U.S. expats and the varied ways they reconstructed and represented their individual and collective histories within the broader scheme of the U.S. presence in Cold War Central America.By Mark T. From the earliest days of non-Native settlement of Montana, when Chinese immigrants made up more than 10 percent of the…
territory&’s population, Chinese pioneers played a key role in the region&’s development. But this population, so crucial to Montana&’s history, remains underrepresented in historical accounts, and popular attention to the Chinese in Montana tends to focus on sensational elements—exoticizing Chinese Montanans and distancing their lived experiences from our modern understanding. The Middle Kingdom under the Big Sky seeks to recover the stories of Montana&’s Chinese population in their own words and deepen understanding of Chinese experiences in Montana by using a global lens. Mark T. Johnson has mined several large collections of primary documents left by Chinese pioneers, translated into English here for the first time. These collections, spanning the 1880s through the 1950s, provide insight into the pressures the Chinese community faced—from family members back in China and from non-Chinese Montanans—as economic and cultural disturbances complicated acceptance of Chinese residents in the state. Through their own voices Johnson reveals the agency of Chinese Montanans in the history of the American West and China.By Beth Bailey, Alesha E. Doan, Kara Dixon Vuic, Shannon Portillo. 2022
The U.S. military is a massive institution, and its policies on sex, gender, and sexuality have shaped the experiences of…
tens of millions of Americans, sometimes in life-altering fashion. The essays in Managing Sex in the U.S. Military examine historical and contemporary military policies and offer different perspectives on the broad question: &“How does the U.S. military attempt to manage sex?&” This collection focuses on the U.S. military&’s historical and contemporary attempts to manage sex—a term that is, in practice, slippery and indefinite, encompassing gender and gender identity, sexuality and sexual orientation, and sexual behaviors and practices, along with their outcomes. In each chapter, the authors analyze the military&’s evolving definitions of sex, sexuality, and gender, and the significance of those definitions to both the military and American society.By Deborah Hodge. 2022

edges—but does it have to be this way? Imagine a city where we aren’t stuck in cars, where clean air makes it easier to breathe, and where transit is easy to access—and on time. Imagine a city where streets are for people! This fun, accessible and ultimately hopeful book explores sustainable transportation around the globe, including electric vehicles, public transit, bicycles, walking and more. It invites us to conjure up a city of the future, where these modes are all used together to create a place that is sustainable, healthy, accessible and safe. Includes a list of ideas for children to promote green transportation in their communities, along with a glossary and sources for further reading. The ThinkCities series is inspired by the urgency for new approaches to city life as a result of climate change, population growth and increased density. It highlights the challenges and risks cities face, but also offers hope for building resilience, sustainability and quality of life as young people advocate for themselves and their communities. Transformative Visions for Qualitative Inquiry takes as its central theme the idea of transformation, transformative action, transformative possibilities, and potentialities…
for the future for qualitative inquiry. In a present moment defined by a pandemic of meanings over COVID-19, climate change, political upheaval, inequality, and oppression of all kinds, contributors to this volume seek a new way forward—to reimagine a post-pandemic pedagogy of hope and compassion both for qualitative research and for the communities in which we inhabit. Empathy. Healing. Collaboration. Survival. Discomfort. Protection. Justice. Creative agency. The arts. These are the watchwords for the road ahead. In these uncertain times, leading international scholars from the United States, Canada, and Australia look ahead with a renewed sense of hope, but remain grounded in the reality that much work lies ahead—that our inquiry must meet the demands of our hopeful but evolving future. More specifically, contributors focus on such topics as: academic healing; environmental justice; the hegemony of higher education and challenges to critical education; arts-based research such as songwriting, participatory workshops, and autopoetics; disruptions to conventional humanist and Western modes of thought; and questions of empathy and spirit-writing. Transformative Visions for Qualitative Inquiry is a must-read for faculty and students alike who are interested in imagining new ways to restore healing from the pandemic—to push back, resist, heal, share, laugh, and live.By Sławomir H. The book will be of particular interest to sociologists of religion and others focused on contemporary Central and Eastern European societies.By Michael D. Stephens, Gordon W Roderick. 1984
First published in 1984, Post-School Education attempts to compare development of post-school education in America and England in nineteenth century.…
Divided into eight chapters, it discusses themes like traditions and attitudes; systems of school education; middle class initiatives prior to 1850; educational provision for adults in the 19th century; the growth of technical education; the development of university education; and the role of government, to showcase the extent to which England influenced America and differences between the two experiences. This book is an essential read for scholars and researchers of history of education, American education, British education and education in general.
Offering historical identity fortified by the presence of women belonging to the various areas of creative and intellectual life, this…
book allows readers to understand greater contexts of their identity. The history of female artists is an indicator of how social identity was erased from the historiography which asserted itself in nineteenth-century Europe. Analysis of the biographical pathways traced here reveals how women in the Middle Ages and beyond have been active protagonists of the arts, received reviews, as well as had an authoritative role as the esteemed and attentive witnesses of the society around them.Reconstruction of social relationships, intellectual and creative production as well as of the life stories of some of Europe’s most important female artists, foregrounds this omission and highlights their extraordinary nature. The different stories contained in this book narrate the lives and works of Hildegard von Bingen, Francesca Caccini, Mary Wollstonecraft, George Sand, Lou Andreas Salomé and Elke Mascha Blankenburg.By reinforcing the awareness of social and historical origins, the informed reader is better equipped to tackle their futures and build up their personalities.By Dominique Matthes, Hilke Pallesen. 2022
