By John R. Hinnells, Richard King. 2007
Do religions justify and cause violence or are they more appropriately seen as forces for peace and tolerance? Featuring contributions…
from international experts in the field, this book explores the debate that has emerged in the context of secular modernity about whether religion is a primary cause of social division, conflict and war, or whether this is simply a distortion of the ‘true’ significance of religion and that if properly followed it promotes peace, harmony, goodwill and social cohesion. Focusing on how this debate is played out in the South Asian context, the book engages with issues relating to religion and violence in both its classical and contemporary formations. The collection is designed to look beyond the stereotypical images and idealized portrayals of the peaceful South Asian religious traditions (especially Hindu, Buddhist, Jain and Sufi), which can occlude their own violent histories and to analyze the diverse attitudes towards, and manifestations of violence within the major religious traditions of South Asia. Divided into three sections, the book also discusses globalization and the theoretical issues that inform contemporary discussions of the relationship between religion and violence.Sexual Justice / Cultural Justice: Critical Perspectives in Political Theory and Practice (Routledge Innovations in Political Theory #Vol. 23)

authors challenge the framing of ‘feminism and multiculturalism’ as one of inevitable conflict, as well as the portrayal of liberal sexual equality and cultural rights as irreconcilable, moving the debate beyond the culture/gender impasse. Focusing on three theoretical themes from a feminist perspective: the meaning and role of culture and identity in politics the problem of autonomy in relation to culture and identity the crucial role of democracy in addressing the theoretical and practical problems raised by this set of issues. The diverse contributors break new theoretical ground by providing detailed engagement with the concrete experiences of women and minorities who are caught in the dilemmas of gender and cultural justice. The collected chapters address sexual/cultural justice in a range of different countries, offering illuminating case studies on Britain, South Africa, Canada, the Netherlands, Australia, Mexico, and the United States. Sexual Justice / Cultural Justice will be of strong interest to students and researchers working in the areas of gender and feminist theory, politics, law, philosophy and sociology. The economies of the People’s Republic of China and India are emerging-market economies, which account for more than a third…
of the global population. These two economies share many similarities in that they are large populous neighbours, who were regarded as abjectly poor countries until the 1980s and both are ancient cultures which has both advantages and disadvantages for economic development. However, their political systems are very different. While India is an open democratic society, China is a closed society run in an authoritarian manner by the Chinese Communist Party. This dissimilarity impacts on the economic decision making process in the two economies. This book is the first to systematically compare and contrast the two economies. It takes an objective and dispassionate view and delves into the constructive and favourable side as well as adverse and unfavourable side of the two economies. Written in a comprehensive and authoritative manner, it covers large areas of the two economies, including trade and financial sectors. It also includes other important relevant facets of the two economies. The Balance of Power in Asia-Pacific Security: US-China Policies on Regional Order (Politics in Asia)
By Liselotte Odgaard. 2007
Investigating the dynamics of balancing patterns in the Asia-Pacific, this book focuses particularly on the contribution of great powers and…
middle powers to regional stability. Taking the US and China as great powers, and using ASEAN, Russia, Australia and South Korea as example of middle powers, the author addresses the following questions: Do middle powers influence balancing patterns in the Asia-Pacific? Are the United States and China balancing each other in the Asia-Pacific, and if so, by which means? What is the contribution of the English school to understanding balance of power dynamics? The Balance of Power in Asia-Pacific Security makes a persuasive contribution to the debate on the US-China relationship. Interviews with policy practitioners and academics in the region offer a systematic analysis of the complexities of Asia-Pacific security. Providing conceptual insights, this book gives a fresh understanding of the mechanisms necessary to maintain regional stability and explains the implications of US-China power balancing for global security. It will be an important resource for scholars and students of Asia-Pacific politics and security.Although it is generally believed in China that socialism raised women’s status and paid work liberated them from the shackles…
of patriarchy, the economic reforms of the last two decades of the twentieth century meant women workers were more vulnerable to losing their jobs than men. Unlike previous studies, which have focused on the macro-structural features of this process, this book makes the voices of ordinary women workers heard and applies feminist perspectives on women and work to the Chinese situation. Drawing upon extensive life history interviews, this book contests the view that mobilizing women into the workplace brought about their liberation. Instead, the gendered redundancy they experienced was the culmination of a lifetime’s experiences of gender inequalities. Setting their life stories against a backdrop of great social-political upheaval in China, the book suggests that the women of this ‘unlucky generation’ have borne the brunt of sufferings caused by sacrifices they made for the development of socialist China.Democracy in Occupied Japan: The U.S. Occupation and Japanese Politics and Society (Routledge Studies in Asia's Transformations #10)
By Yoneyuki Sugita, Mark E. Caprio. 2007
With expert contributions from both the US and Japan, this book examines the legacies of the US Occupation on Japanese…
politics and society, and discusses the long-term impact of the Occupation on contemporary Japan. Focusing on two central themes – democracy and the interplay of US-initiated reforms and Japan's endogenous drive for democratization and social justice – the contributors address key questions: How did the US authorities and the Japanese people define democracy? To what extent did America impose their notions of democracy on Japan? How far did the Japanese pursue impulses toward reform, rooted in their own history and values? Which reforms were readily accepted and internalized, and which were ultimately subverted by the Japanese as impositions from outside? These questions are tackled by exploring the dynamics of the reform process from the three perspectives of innovation, continuity and compromise, specifically determining the effect that this period made to Japanese social, economic, and political understanding. Critically examines previously unexplored issues that influenced postwar Japan such as the effect of labour and healthcare legislation, textbook revision, and minority policy. Illuminating contemporary Japan, its achievements, its potential and its quandaries, this book will appeal to students and scholars of Japanese-US relations, Japanese history and Japanese politics. The Transformation of Urban Space in Post-Soviet Russia (BASEES/Routledge Series on Russian and East European Studies #Vol. 30)
By Isolde Brade, Konstantin Axenov, Evgenij Bondarchuk. 2007
In the years since 1989, the societies of Russia and Eastern Europe have undergone a remarkable transformation from socialism to…
democracy and free market capitalism. Making an important contribution to the theoretical literature of urbanism and post-communist transition, this significant book considers the change in the spatial structure of post-Soviet urban spaces since the period of transition began. It argues that the era of transformation can be considered as largely complete, and that this has given way to a new stage of development as part of the global urban and economic system: post-transformation. The authors examine the modern trends in the urban development of western and post-socialist countries, and explore the theories of the transformation and post-transformation of urban space. Providing a wealth of detailed qualitative research on the Russian city of St. Petersburg, the study examines the changing structure of its retail trade and services sector. Overall, this book is an important step forward in the study of the spatial dynamics of urban transformation in the former communist world.Politics in Malaysia: The Malay Dimension (Routledge Malaysian Studies Series #3)
By Edmund Terence Gomez. 2007
Examining some of the most critical issues in Malaysian politics today, including human rights, law and democracy, gender and Islam,…
this book explores the contours of the contemporary landscape of Malaysian politics, focusing especially on politics among the majority ethnic Malay community. In particular, the book explains why changes in patterns of political mobilization and the rhetoric of the dominant parties - particularly the PAS and UMNO - have been so limited, despite the overt and growing dissatisfaction shown by Malaysians with the state of their political system and the ability of these parties to represent their interests. It considers the recent history of events and discourses within Malaysian society, and UMNO and PAS, and goes on to analyze why important transitions have occurred in society yet political parties have not adapted themselves to these changes and remained reticent about instituting meaningful reforms involving these matters. The Thousand and One Nights: Space, Travel and Transformation (Routledge Studies in Middle Eastern Literatures)
By Richard Van Leeuwen. 2007
This volume discusses The Thousand and One Nights' themes of space and travel showing how they are used not only as…
a setting in which the story unfolds, but also as the dynamic force which propels the heroes and the story to the final dénouement. These events often symbolize a process of transformation, in which the hero has to search for his destined role or strive to attain the object of his desire. In this way, themes of travel are the narrative backbone of stories of various genres including love, religion, magic and adventure. This book not only gives a fresh approach to many stories of the collection, but also proposes new insights in the nature of The Thousand and one Nights as a self-reflexive narrative and is essential reading for scholars of Arabic literature. From the 1970s to the 1990s, China implemented a wide array of industrial policies to build up indigenous big business…
groups in their attempts to ‘catch-up’ with the industries of the developed world. With its entry into the WTO, China is under huge pressure to pursue the market-friendly policies advocated by the advanced economies. This is the first book in English that applies the theories of big business, catch-up and state intervention to the Chinese brewing industry. Having gathered first-hand research in China, Yuantao Guo analyzes the relationship between big business, competition and state intervention in the context of developing economies, demonstrating the implications of the industrial concentration and value chain integration of the global big business revolution for catch-up by developing world industries, considering to what extent state intervention can allow them to meet the competitive challenge. Examining these themes in relation to the Chinese brewing industry, Yuantao Guo uses detailed case studies of the Yanjing and Tsingtao breweries in order to detail the struggles that Chinese brewers have faced. This book makes a significant contribution to modern day discussions on globalization. The collapse of communism in Europe, the quest for economic security and the War on Terror have all affected China's…

that erupted during Indonesia’s post-New Order transition. Indonesia democratised after the long and authoritarian New Order regime ended in May 1998. But the transition was far less peaceful than is often thought. It claimed about 10,000 lives in communal (ethnic and religious) violence, and nearly as many as that again in separatist violence in Aceh and East Timor. Taking a comprehensive look at the communal violence that arose after the New Order regime, this book will be of interest to students of Southeast Asian studies, social movements, political violence and ethnicity.Foreign Policy Making in Taiwan: From Principle to Pragmatism (Politics in Asia)
By Dennis V. Hickey. 2007
Following President Chen Sui-bian’s victory in the controversial 2004 presidential election, this book examines the future direction of Taiwan’s foreign…
policy, focusing on the internal and external forces that influence and shape the countries foreign policy decisions today. The author suggests that four levels of analysis – the international system, governmental structure, societal forces and individual factors – pose some explanatory value when seeking to understand Taipei’s foreign policy behaviour. Taiwan’s foreign policy decision-making remains an extremely complex process involving many important variables. However the author’s detailed analysis reveals that external factors, particularly seismic shifts in global politics and the role of China and the US have had an extraordinary degree of influence over the island’s foreign relations. This book highlights these factors as important considerations that continue to play a critical role in shaping Taiwan’s foreign policy. Providing a clear analysis of the dynamics of Taiwan’s foreign policy, Foreign Policy Making in Taiwan is an important addition to the literature on Taiwan and will be essential reading for followers of Chinese politics, comparative politics and foreign policy analysis. The Biographies of Rechungpa: The Evolution of a Tibetan Hagiography
By Peter Alan Roberts. 2007

little-known manuscripts, and discovers how the image of both Milarepa and Rechungpa underwent fundamental transformations over a period of over three centuries. Peter Alan Roberts compares significant episodes in the life of Rechungpa as portrayed in a succession of texts, and thus demonstrates the evolution of Rechungpa’s biography. This is the first survey of the surviving literature which includes a detailed analysis of their dates, authorship and interrelationships. It shows how Rechungpa was increasingly portrayed as a rebellious, volatile and difficult pupil, as a lineage from a fellow-pupil prospered to become dominant in Tibet. Written in a style that makes it accessible to broad readership, Roberts' book will be of great value to anyone with an interest in the fields of Tibetan literature, history or religion. The Russo-Japanese War was the major conflict of the earliest decade of the twentieth century. The struggle for mastery in…
northeast Asia, specifically for control of Korea, was watched at the time very closely by observers from many other countries keen to draw lessons about the conduct of war in the modern industrial age. The defeat of a traditional European power by a non-white, non-western nation became a model for imitation and admiration among people under, or threatened with, colonial rule. Examining the wide impact of the war and exploring the effect on the political balance in northeast Asia, this book focuses on the reactions in Europe, the United States, East Asia and the wider colonial world, considering the impact on different sections of society, on political and cultural ideas and ideologies, and on various national independence movements.Health Care in Malaysia: The Dynamics of Provision, Financing and Access (Routledge Malaysian Studies Series #Vol. 4)

By Peter A. Petri, Sumner J. La Croix. 2007
International trade continues to expand robustly in East Asia and elsewhere, but global trade negotiations have collapsed and globalization is…
widely criticized. In this book, the participants of the thirtieth Pacific Trade and Development Conference—including the then-Director General of the World Trade Organization, and leading government officials, academics and executives from a dozen major Pacific Rim economies—debate whether global negotiations have ended once and for all, or are suffering temporarily from ‘globalization fatigue;’ whether East Asia’s new regional partnerships will advance or undermine the global trading system; and whether the region’s trade tensions with the United States will intensify or subside. They provide new empirical evidence on how trade affects the distribution of income, the location of pollution-intensive industries, the causes of ‘outsourcing,’ the structure of the intellectual property regime, and international security. And they probe the implications of adjustment to globalization: how can countries reap the benefits of trade while controlling the risks faced by the poor and, perhaps more importantly, the politically strong? Challenges to the Global Trading System is an invaluable resource for students and scholars of Asia-Pacific studies, international relations and development studies, as well as those with a more general interest in Asian studies. With Mongolia fast becoming a significant exporter of minerals and raw materials, this book provides a full account of political…
