This book seeks to understand white conservative Christians’ support for Donald Trump, using their own words. Drawing on the triangular…
relationship between the 45th president, and his voters, and religious organizations, this work investigates the creation of the tale of Trump as the protector and enhancer of Christian values. The first part of the book discusses in detail the white conservative Christian constituency in the United States, and the development of feelings of displacement and resentment fostered by intergroup threat and nationalism. The central part focuses on the actor known as the “Religious Right,” through the rhetoric of one of their most representative organizations in the twenty-first century. The final part focuses on the character of Donald Trump and his peculiar relationship with religious discourse. The book demonstrates that while such discourse is expected of Trump as a Republican candidate, his approach to it is characterized by detachment and sloganized exploitation of Christian symbols. Ultimately, the book highlights the cultural tools that are crucial in the reproduction of structures of inequality and the ways they have been used by conservative politicians and groups to accumulate power.Noise and Randomness in Living System
By Sisir Roy, Sarangam Majumdar. 2022
This book illustrates the role of randomness and noise in living organisms. Traditionally, the randomness and noise have been used…
in understanding signal processing in communications. This book is divided into two sections, the first of which introduces readers to the various types and sources of noise and the constructive role of noise in non-linear dynamics. It also analyses the importance of randomness and noise in a variety of science and engineering applications. In turn, the second section discusses in detail the functional role of noise in biological processes for example, in case of brain function at the level of ion channel, synaptic level and even at cognitive level. These are described in various chapters. One of the challenging issue finding the neuronal correlates of various meditative states is to understand how brain controls various types of noise so as to reach a state of synchronized oscillatory state of the brain corresponding to the state of Samadhi. This is described in details in one chapter called Noise, Coherence and meditation. The concept of noise and the role of randomness in living organism raise lot of controversy for last few decades. This is discussed in a separate chapter. Finally, the epistemic and ontic nature of randomness as discussed in physical science are investigated in the context of living organism.Realität in Serie: Realitätsbehauptungen in zeitgenössischen Fernsehserien
By Katja Kanzler, Sophie Spieler, Stefan Schubert. 2022
Producing Green Knowledge and Innovation: A Framework for Greening Universities (Innovation, Technology, and Knowledge Management)
By Shantha Indrajith Liyanage. 2022
The knowledge and innovation meant for knowledge-based economies (KBEs) are branded as green knowledge and innovation/ethical human capital, blended with…
the natural system as modeled by the Quintuple Helix Model of Innovation. However, due to bureaucratic challenges and myths, conventional universities produce knowledge and innovation in the sense of traditional disciplinary knowledge, which are not adequate to meet the goals of sustainable development. This book provides a model for greening a university which in turn can produce green knowledge and innovation in the mainstream knowledge production process. This model, which is based on research, can be adopted by the conventional universities in other regions. Such a process results in providing benefits to stakeholders of the university at the micro-level. At the macro-level, it blends with the other knowledge systems—namely, the natural environment of society, economic system, media-based and culture-based public and civil society, and political system—to create a sustainable knowledge economy. This book, first published in 1991, examines the effect of government policies and social restrictions on the reproductive behaviour and…
family life of the women of Kenya, especially the Kikuyu people. Importation of techniques for social and behavioural regulation from the developed nations, the social restructuring that followed the colonial intervention, the Mau Mau uprisings and current widespread concern with AIDS have disrupted traditional influences on Kenyan reproductive behaviour and family life. In response to these changes, women mobilised into a movement comprised of small local women’s groups scattered throughout Kenya that attempt to educate and influence both its members and government policy. The successes and failures of this movement offer important lessons for the rest of Africa and the developing world.A Man among Other Men: The Crisis of Black Masculinity in Racial Capitalism
By Jordanna Matlon. 2021
A Man among Other Men examines competing constructions of modern manhood in the West African metropolis of Abidjan, Côte d'Ivoire.…
Engaging the histories, representational repertoires, and performative identities of men in Abidjan and across the Black Atlantic, Jordanna Matlon shows how French colonial legacies and media tropes of Blackness act as powerful axes, rooting masculine identity and value within labor, consumerism, and commodification. Through a broad chronological and transatlantic scope that culminates in a deep ethnography of the livelihoods and lifestyles of men in Abidjan's informal economy, Matlon demonstrates how men's subjectivities are formed in dialectical tension by and through hegemonic ideologies of race and patriarchy. A Man among Other Men provides a theoretically innovative, historically grounded, and empirically rich account of Black masculinity that illuminates the sustained power of imaginaries even as capitalism affords a deficit of material opportunities. Revealed is a story of Black abjection set against the anticipation of male privilege, a story of the long crisis of Black masculinity in racial capitalism.Intermarriage and the Friendship of Peoples: Ethnic Mixing in Soviet Central Asia
By Adrienne Edgar. 2022
Intermarriage and the Friendship of Peoples examines the racialization of identities and its impact on mixed couples and families in…
Soviet Central Asia. In marked contrast to its Cold War rivals, the Soviet Union celebrated mixed marriages among its diverse ethnic groups as a sign of the unbreakable friendship of peoples and the imminent emergence of a single "Soviet people." Yet the official Soviet view of ethnic nationality became increasingly primordial and even racialized in the USSR's final decades. In this context, Adrienne Edgar argues, mixed families and individuals found it impossible to transcend ethnicity, fully embrace their complex identities, and become simply "Soviet." Looking back on their lives in the Soviet Union, ethnically mixed people often reported that the "official" nationality in their identity documents did not match their subjective feelings of identity, that they were unable to speak "their own" native language, and that their ambiguous physical appearance prevented them from claiming the nationality with which they most identified. In all these ways, mixed couples and families were acutely and painfully affected by the growth of ethnic primordialism and by the tensions between the national and supranational projects in the Soviet Union. Intermarriage and the Friendship of Peoples is based on more than eighty in-depth oral history interviews with members of mixed families in Kazakhstan and Tajikistan, along with published and unpublished Soviet documents, scholarly and popular articles from the Soviet press, memoirs and films, and interviews with Soviet-era sociologists and ethnographers.GMAT Prep 2023 For Dummies with Online Practice

By Byasdeb Dasgupta, Archita Ghosh, Bishakha Ghosh, Prasenjit Sarkhel. 2022
This book presents a multidimensional perspective on the interlinkage between human development, community characteristics and public service delivery with special…
reference to India. The chapters in the book analyze the influence of public service delivery on human development from neo-classical as well as Marxian point of view. Thus, the expositions in the book provides a balanced mix of macro and micro approaches in the study of development. The analytical discussions are supplemented by case studies and empirical estimates so as to demonstrate the applicability of the theory and the theoretical discourse about human development, community network and the success and failures of critical public services in the Indian context. The methodology followed in the chapters involves critical survey of existing literature, case studies, field survey and use of econometric techniques as well as statistical tools of index construction. While contributors are primarily scholars from neo-classical economics discipline, some are intellectuals from the field of political economy and development studies. Given the wide array of development perspectives, this book is of interest not only to students and researcher of development economics, social science and management, but also a valuable reading for development practitioners and policy makers, who would be interested in understanding how community and public institutions interact to determine access to health, education and social security services that shapes the wellbeing of disadvantaged populations. The lessons and implications are extremely pertinent to other emerging economies, in particular those in South Asia.Cultural Knowledge and Values in English Language Teaching Materials: (Multimodal) Representations and Stakeholders
By Guangwei Hu, Tao Xiong, Dezheng Feng. 2022
This book provides a contextualized and balanced look into the timely topic of values in English Language Teaching (ELT) materials with…
a primary focus on the Chinese context. It features three distinct conceptual and methodological perspectives, namely, perceptions of stakeholders such as material writers, teachers and students, multimodal construction of values, and textual representation of values. It is a valuable resource for those interested in the social, cultural, moral, and ideological dimensions of English education in general, and in the textual and multimodal construction of values in language teaching materials in particular. This book offers a new perspective on the transnational dimensions of China’s educational and economic history by focusing on Sino-German…
interactions in the field of vocational education. It explores how Chinese perceptions of manual work, vocational skills, and educational practices changed dramatically throughout the first half of the twentieth century as Chinese educators increased their efforts to study and translate German pedagogical writings. Case studies researched in this book illustrate how a Chinese appreciation for German technological and scientific advances and German interests in profiting from a growing Chinese economy are not just recent phenomena but have their roots in the early twentieth century.
Negative Capability in Leadership Practice: Implications for Working in Uncertainty
By Peter Simpson, Charlotte Von Bülow. 2022
Working in uncertainty has become the new normal, but what do leaders have to draw upon when lacking the requisite…
knowledge? In this book, the authors make a case for Negative Capability, which enables leaders to work in a state of not knowing without simply reaching for old ideas or resorting to habitual behaviours. It is not a practice that can be measured, but its impact in leadership practice is immense and tangible. Offering fresh insights for leadership students, researchers, and practitioners on the challenges of working in uncertainty, the book offers a novel perspective on Negative Capability as a way of being. Each chapter explores an aspect of Negative Capability through the accounts of leaders and managers who had the courage to explore this way of being and share the stories about its powerful impact. Ultimately, this book explores how a practice of attention can lead to new ways of understanding the role of purpose, leisure, and passion in leadership practice.Using an ISA Mobile App for Professional Development
By Graham Passmore, Julie Prescott. 2022
Building on our prior ISA-based Palgrave pivot, the aims of the book are twofold. One, to showcase a newly developed…
App as a tool in the use of Identity Structure Analysis (ISA) for researchers interested in identity. Second, the book will focus on the use, of a counselling supervision ISA instrument in order to highlight the benefits of ISA for professional development (PD) for any profession. The idea is that any researcher interested in professional and or personal development would be able to use the proposed book to aid them in either a supervision style process of development or the more standard one-to-one annual/biannual approach to PD. Through using ISA in PD, the book and its attendant analyses will encourage discussion, facilitate openness, and highlight potential issues that may lead to burnout, mental health issues, leaving a profession or additional risks. That is, the book will be oriented to informing researchers as to the potential ISA, the App, and the supervision instrument hold for directing PD.Digitale Lernwelten – Serious Games und Gamification: Didaktik, Anwendungen und Erfahrungen in der Beruflichen Bildung
By Wolfgang Becker, Maren Metz. 2022
By Andreas Eichler, Frank Loose, Viktor Isaev. 2022
The Sociolinguistics of Global Asias (Routledge Studies in Sociolinguistics)
By Jerry Won Lee. 2022
The volume explores the social, cultural, and historical forms of “language” that have come to be associated with “Asia” as…
a global phenomenon and their implications for better understanding the contemporary linguistic and political landscape in Asias. The book examines the flows of migration, people, cultures, and language resources within, across, through, to, and from Asias in tandem with social, political, and ideological factors, drawing on case studies of global iterations of a wide range of Asian national and cultural imaginaries. In so doing, the volume builds on the growing body of scholarship on the sociolinguistics of globalization in its critical inquiries into the linguistic and cultural practices that have come to be constitutive of national or supranational localities toward unpacking the forces of globalization more broadly. This book will be of particular interest to students and scholars interested in sociolinguistics, multilingualism, linguistic anthropology, Asian Studies, and Asian American studies.
