Cultivating Teen Faith: Insights from the Confirmation Project
By Richard R. Osmer; Katherine M. Douglass. 2018
What are churches doing to form the faith of their young people? Many church denominations that practice infant baptism offer…
confirmation or an equivalent ministry when children reach adolescence and enter a new phase of spiritual growth—but all churches, regardless of tradition, wrestle with how to get young adults to actively join the church. What really works? In this book twelve authors draw on a three-year study of more than three thousand US congregations across five denominations—United Methodist Church, African Methodist Episcopal Church, Episcopal Church, Evangelical Lutheran Church in America, and Presbyterian Church (USA)—to answer this pressing question. They tell stories of excellent and innovative confirmation programs that work and that show, above all, what good discipleship with young people looks like. Youth pastors, church leaders, and parents alike will benefit from the practices and new ways of teaching presented here that have proven helpful in forming and enhancing the faith of youth. Contributors: Joy L. Arroyo, Reginald Blount, Kenda Creasy Dean, Katherine M. Douglass, Terri Martinson Elton, Lisa Kimball, Gordon S. Mikoski, Kermit Moss, Richard R. Osmer, Kate Harmon Siberine, Jacob Sorenson, Kate O. Unruh.Spiritual Healing: Science, Meaning, and Discernment
By Sarah Coakley. 2020
Spiritual healing has been a cornerstone of Christian belief from its beginnings, although there are various interpretations of what exactly…
it is and how it happens. To address these questions, the contributors to this volume come together to examine spiritual healing from a number of disciplinary perspectives. How can such healing be explained through a scientific or medical lens? What do biblical and historical instantiations of it tell us today? And how are we to think of it as anthropologists, philosophers, or theologians? Finally, what does all this mean for those seeking spiritual healing for themselves, or pastors walking alongside the afflicted? Deftly edited by theologian Sarah Coakley, Spiritual Healing offers a composite narrative that investigates the many intermingled factors at work in this intriguing phenomenon. The result is a human story as much as it is a theological one, satisfying discerning believers and skeptics alike in its rigorous pursuit of truth and meaning.Cultivating Teen Faith: Insights from the Confirmation Project

By Mark Sedgwick, Francesco Piraino. 2021
Similarities between esoteric and mystical currents in different religious traditions have long interested scholars. This book takes a new look…
at the relationship between such currents. It advances a discussion that started with the search for religious essences, archetypes, and universals, from William James to Eranos. The universal categories that resulted from that search were later criticized as essentialist constructions, and questioned by deconstructionists. An alternative explanation was advanced by diffusionists: that there were transfers between different traditions. This book presents empirical case studies of such constructions, and of transfers between Judaism, Christianity, and Islam in the premodern period, and Judaism, Christianity, and Western esotericism in the modern period. It shows that there were indeed transfers that can be clearly documented, and that there were also indeed constructions, often very imaginative. It also shows that there were many cases that were neither transfers nor constructions, but a mixture of the two.The Jesuit guide to (almost) everything: a spirituality for real life
By James Martin. 2010
The Roman Catholic religious order - the Society of Jesus, a.k.a. "The Jesuits" - was founded in the 16th century…
by Saint Ignatius of Loyola. Famous for their practical spirituality and ardent commitment to education, the Jesuits have a reputation as smart people of faith who change lives for the better and make a difference in the world. The Jesuit Guide to (Almost) Everything translates the 500-year-old insights of Saint Ignatius (often called "Ignatian spirituality") for a modern audience, using stories and examples from Martin's 20 years as a Jesuit and from the lives of the great Jesuit saints and spiritual masters. The Politics of Jesus
By John Howard Yoder. 1994
Tradition has painted a portrait of a Savior aloof from governmental concerns and whose teachings point to an apolitical life…
for his disciples. How, then, are we to respond today to a world so thoroughly entrenched in national and international affairs? But such a picture of Jesus is far from accurate, argues John Howard Yoder. Using the texts of the New Testament, Yoder critically examines the traditional portrait of Jesus as an apolitical figure and attempts to clarify the true impact of Jesus' life, work, and teachings on his disciples' social behavior. The book first surveys the multiple ways the image of an apolitical Jesus has been propagated, then canvasses the Gospel narrative to reveal how Jesus is rightly portrayed as a thinker and leader immediately concerned with the agenda of politics and the related issues of power, status, and right relations. Selected passages from the epistles corroborate a Savior deeply concerned with social, political, and moral issues. In this thorough revision of his acclaimed 1972 text, Yoder provides updated interaction with publications touching on this subject. Following most of the chapters are new "epilogues" that summarize research conducted during the last two decades -- research that continues to support the insights set forth in Yoder's original work. Currently a standard in many college and seminary ethics courses, The Politics of Jesus is also an excellent resource for the general reader desiring to understand Christ's response to the world of politics and his will for those who would follow him.La ruta del conocimiento
By Violet Moller. 2016
The Times «MollGlory Girl: Daring to Believe in Your Passion and God’s Purpose

By Tom Doyle, JoAnn Doyle. 2021
For the first time ever Tom Doyle, popular author and pastor to the unreached, is joined by his wife and…
ministry partner, JoAnn, to explore the incredible work of God in the hearts and lives of women in the Muslim world.Despite enormous risks to themselves and their families, former Muslim women are now influencing their husbands and their children and bringing others to faith in Jesus Christ. No matter where they live, these women are the God-ordained spiritual gatekeepers of their families.Tom and JoAnn Doyle have worked for twenty-five years in the Middle East and are master storytellers of the miraculous works of God happening in the Muslim world. With a clear call to action, they "sound the alarm" to the body of Christ, using inspirational stories straight out of the underground church—stories you don&’t get on the news. The level of oppression that women face under Islam is unfathomable to many in non-Muslim nations. Life is often a string of abuses and near-enslavement under cultural norms that are anything but &“normal&” to the Western mind-set.The Doyles believe that women are a major reason why more Muslims than ever before are coming to faith in Christ. Over the years they have discovered that once God sets a Muslim woman free, she becomes an unstoppable force for God. Women Who Risk takes readers into the intimacy of Muslim homes in Saudi Arabia, Syria, Iran, and other hot spots to see the drama of Christ at work. The stories of these women are both breathtaking and heart-rending. Living on the edge, these women spread the gospel without fear, and the victory of the gospel is thrilling for all to see. They are the new heroes of the Middle East.Beads and Strands: Reflections of an African Woman on Christianity in Africa (Theology In Africa)

By Brant Pitre. 2015
Who did Jesus of Nazareth claim to be? What was his relationship to early Judaism? When and how did he…
expect the kingdom to come? What were his intentions? Though these key questions have been addressed in studies of the historical Jesus, Brant Pitre argues that they cannot be fully answered apart from a careful historical analysis of the Last Supper accounts. Yet these accounts, both by the Gospel writers and by Paul, are widely neglected by contemporary Jesus research. In this book Pitre fills a notable gap in historical Jesus research as he offers a rigorous, up-to-date study of the historical Jesus and the Last Supper. Situating the Last Supper in the triple contexts of ancient Judaism, the life of Jesus, and early Christianity, Pitre brings to light crucial insights into major issues driving the quest for Jesus. His Jesus and the Last Supper is sure to ignite scholarly discussion and debate.Working the Angles: The Shape of Pastoral Integrity
By Eugene Peterson. 1987
American pastors, says Eugene Peterson, are abandoning their posts at an alarming rate. They are not leaving their churches and…
getting other jobs. Instead, they have become "a company of shopkeepers, and the shops they keep are churches." Pastors and the communities they serve have become preoccupied with image and standing, with administration, measurable success, sociological impact, and economic viability. In Working the Angles, Peterson calls the attention of his fellow pastors to three basic acts--which he sees as the three angles of a triangle--that are so critical to the pastoral ministry that they determine the shape of everything else. The acts--prayer, reading Scripture, and giving spiritual direction--are acts of attention to God in three different contexts: oneself, the community of faith, and another person. Only by being attentive to these three critical acts, says Peterson, can pastors fulfill their prime responsibility of keeping the religious community attentive to God. Written out of the author's own experience as pastor of a "single pastor church," this well-written, provocative book will be stimulating reading for lay Christians and pastors alike.52 Bible Words Every Kid Should Know

By Fran oise Baylis, Angela Ballantyne. 2016
This book discusses how to respectfully and responsibly include pregnant women in clinical research …
In sharp contrast the existing literature predominantly focuses on the reasons why the inclusion of pregnant women in clinical research is necessary - viz to develop effective treatments for women during pregnancy to promote fetal safety to reduce harm to women and fetuses from suboptimal care and to allow access to the benefits of research participation This book supports the shift to a new default position whereby pregnant women are included in clinical research unless researchers argue convincingly for their exclusion This shift raises many as yet unexplored ethical and policy questions about existing barriers to the equitable inclusion of pregnant women in research This book is original in three key ways First it presents an unparalleled depth of analysis of the ethics of research with pregnant women bringing together many of the key authors in this field as well as experts in research ethics and in vulnerability who have not previously applied their work to pregnant women Second it includes innovative theoretical work in ethics and disease specific case studies that highlight the current complexity and future challenges of research involving pregnant women Third the book brings together authors who argue both for and against including more pregnant women in formal clinical trialsThe Jesus I Never Knew
