En racontant leur expédition tranquille, il livre ses réflexions sur la littérature et la philosophie, sur les Indiens et l'histoire puritaine de la Nouvelle-Angleterre, sur les grands textes sacrés. Voyage intérieur autant qu'excursion fluviale, ce tout premier récit, inédit jusqu'ici en français, porte en germe ce qui fera la particularité de son livre le plus fameux, Walden.
