By Ayya Khema. 1997
Self-transformation is an essential element in all forms of Buddhist meditation--from Tantra to Zen. Ayya Khema, author of the best-selling…
Being Nobody, Going Nowhere, uses one of the earliest Buddhist suttas to guide us along the path of the oldest Buddhist meditative practice for understanding the nature of "self." By following the Buddha's explanation with clear, insightful examples from her years of teaching meditation, she guides us back and forth between the relative understanding and higher realizations of the Buddhist concept of "self." Her thoughtful contemplation of the Buddha's radical understanding of "self" and her practical advice for achieving insight offer the reader a profound understanding of the "self." Both beginning and advanced practitioners will greatly benefit from Ayya Khema's warm and down-to-earth exposition of the Buddha's meditation on "self."John Knox and the Reformation

By Penelope Rowlands. 2005
Carmel Snow, who changed the course of our culture by launching the careers of some of today's greatest figures in…
fashion and the arts, was one of the most extraordinary women of the twentieth century. As editor in chief of Harper's Bazaar from 1934 to 1958 she championed the concept of "a well-dressed magazine for the well-dressed mind," bringing cutting-edge art, fiction, photography, and reportage into the American home. Now comes A Dash of Daring, a first and definitive biography of this larger-than-life figure in publishing, art, and letters. Veteran magazine journalist Penelope Rowlands describes the remarkable places Snow frequented and the people whose lives she transformed, among them Richard Avedon, Diana Vreeland, Geoffrey Beene, Henri Cartier-Bresson, Cristobal Balenciaga, Lauren Bacall, and Truman Capote. She chronicles Snow's life on both sides of the Atlantic, beginning in nineteenth-century Ireland and continuing to Paris, Milan, and New York City, the fashion capitals of the world. Snow was the daughter of an Irish immigrant, who was herself a forward-thinking businesswoman, and she worked in her mother's custom dressmaking shop before being discovered by the magazine publisher Conde Nast and training under Edna Woolman Chase, the famous longtime editor of Vogue. From there it was on to Harper's Bazaar which, with the help of such key employees as Avedon, Vreeland, and art director Alexei Brodovitch, Snow turned into the most admired magazine of the century. Among the disparate talents who worked at Bazaar in the Snow era were Andy Warhol, the heiress Doris Duke, Maeve Brennan, and members of the storied Algonquin Round Table. Overflowing with previously untold stories of the colorful and glamorous, A Dash of Daring is a compelling portrait of the fashion world during a golden era.No Man's Land: The Life and Art of Mary Riter Hamilton, 1868-1954
By Kathryn A. Young, Sarah M. McKinnon. 2017
What force of will and circumstance drove a woman from a comfortable life painting china tea services to one of…
hardship and loneliness in the battle zones of France and Belgium following the Great War? For western Canadian artist Mary Riter Hamilton (1868-1954), art was her life’s passion. Her tale is one of tragedy and adventure, from homestead beginnings, to genteel drawing rooms in Winnipeg, Victoria and Vancouver, to Berlin and Parisian art schools, to Vimy and Ypres, and finally to illness and poverty in old age. "No Man’s Land" is the first biographical study of Hamilton, whose work can be found in galleries and art museums throughout Canada. Young and McKinnon’s meticulous research in unpublished private collections brings to light new correspondence between Hamilton and her friends, revealing the importance of female networks to an artist’s well being. Her letters from abroad, in particular, bring a woman’s perspective into the immediate post-war period and give voice to trying conditions. Hamilton’s career is situated within the context of her peers Florence Carlyle, Emily Carr, and Sophie Pemberton with whom she shared a Canadian and European experience.Angel Adjutant of "Twice Born Men" (Start Classics)

gepgraphical setting (South Asia). His teachings are the basis of a world religion Sikhism - a world religion both in the sense that Sikhs now live in substantial numbers in all the inhabited continents and in the sense that what he had to say is challenging and reassuring for people of every cultural background. It is for this reason that the authors, the editor, and the publisher decided to produce a book which would bring Guru Nanak to a new generatio of readers. We decided to do this, despite Guru Nanak's observation, at a time when the present day proliferation of publications aws unimaginable, that "One may read cartloads of books...but only true understanding of the One ultimately counts; all else is the babble of the ego."The Essential Rudolf Steiner

The Abomination of Modern Society
By T. Talmage. 2013
The book "The Abominations of Modern Society" explores the abominations or the evil practices prevailing in this modern world. It…
is a Christian book which explores and talks in great details about the topics of drinking, fashion, sexuality, pornography, adultery, prostitution, incest, fornication, night clubs, gambling, blasphemy, gambling, and administrative taxes imposed on the common people. The most striking point that the book eloquently asserts is: The best being that God ever made is a good woman, and the worst that the devil ever made is a bad one. The author has written the book with a view to contribute to the society which he seems is rapidly degenerating. The insight is very deep and highly ingenious. Reverend Dr. Thomas De Witt Talmage (7 January 1832 - 12 April 1902) was a preacher, clergyman and divine in the United States who held pastorates in the Reformed Church in America and Presbyterian Church. He was one of the most prominent religious leaders in the United States during the mid- to late-19th century, equaled as a pulpit orator perhaps only by Henry Ward Beecher. He also preached to crowds in England. During the 1860s and 70s, Talmage was a well-known reformer in New York City and was often involved in crusades against vice and crime. During the last years of his life, Dr. Talmage ceased preaching and devoted himself to editing, writing, and lecturing. At different periods he was editor of the Christian at Work (1873-76), New York; the Advance (1877-79), Chicago; Frank Leslie's Sunday Magazine (1879-89), New York; and the Christian Herald (1890-1902), New York. For years his sermons were published regularly in more than 3,000 journals, through which he was said to reach 25,000,000 readers.Acadian Reminiscences
By Felix Voorhies. 2013
The Acadian Reminiscences is a word painting of the life of the Acadians in the Teche Country in the long…
ago. The plain, simple frugal life of these people, their devotion to principle, their unbound faith in the goodness of God, their love for each other during all their misfortunes and perilous wanderings, appeal to the heart. The simple pathos of the grandmother's story comes to us with such consummate art, that the eye unwittingly grows moist, as the reader follows the journeyings of this little band, self-exiled and noble in their poverty, from desolated homes on the bleak Acadian coast, to their final destination in the hospitable valley of the Teche. . . . With them [the Acadians] we hear in their peaceful Acadian homes the first war-cry that startles the country, and shudder at the near approach of the cruel and merciless foe. We hope against hope that God or man will interfere in their behalf-till the dreaded day dawns, on which they must decide whether or not they will be true to their God, their King, their country, lose all and become wanderers on the face of the earth; or sacrificing these, supinely yield to Britain, and continue to live at ease and in plenty in the homes of their youth, and till the soil hallowed by the graves of their forefathers. When these issues were presented to them, much as they loved their homes, and the land that gave them birth, they cried out with one accord: No, no a thousand times! Sacrifice our religion, our King, our country? No, let ruin, desolation, despair, let death overtake us, we cannot, we will not give up those. And so the die was cast. In the utmost haste valuables were gathered together or thrown into wells, objects of spoil were destroyed, and they themselves applied the torch that soon reduced their beloved village to ashes. In the darkness of the night, lighted only by the lurid glare of their burning homes, they left their devoted St. Gabriel forever. -Andrew Thorpe from the IntroductionAn Exposition of the Last Psalme (Start Classics)

standard fixtures in the home and barely accepted in many professions, Gilbreth excelled in both spheres, concurrently winning honors as "Engineer of the Year” and "Mother of the Year. ” This accessible, engaging introduction to the life of Lillian Gilbreth examines her pivotal role in establishing the discipline of industrial psychology, her work as an engineer of domestic management and home economics, and her role as mother of twelve children--made famous by the book, and later movie, Cheaper by the Dozen. This book examines the life of an exceptional woman who was able to negotiate the divide between the public and domestic spheres and define it on her terms. About the Lives of American Women series: Selected and edited by renowned women’s historian Carol Berkin, these brief biographies are designed for use in undergraduate courses. Rather than a comprehensive approach, each biography focuses instead on a particular aspect of a women’s life that is emblematic of her time, or which made her a pivotal figure in the era. The emphasis is on a "good read,” featuring accessible writing and compelling narratives, without sacrificing sound scholarship and academic integrity. Primary sources at the end of each biography reveal the subject’s perspective in her own words. Study questions and an annotated bibliography support the student reader.Een Vast Burg is Onze God
