Major General Sid Shachnow was more than a highly decorated Vietnam War veteran--receiving two silver and three bronze stars with…
V for Valor. He survived a crucible far crueler than the jungles of Vietnam: Nazi occupied Eastern Europe. As a child, he spent three years in the notorious Kovno Concentration Camp. But his next journey took him to America, where he worked his way through school and eventually enlisted in the US Army. He volunteered for U.S. Special Forces, and served proudly for 32 years. His driving dream was to save others from the indignities he had endured and the deadly fate he so narrowly escaped. From Vietnam to the Mideast, to the fall of the Berlin Wall, Sid Shachow served in Special Operations. He grew as Special Forces grew, rising to major-general--responsible for American Special Forces everywhere--but the lessons of Kovno stayed with him, wherever he turned, wherever he soldiered. Hope and Honor is a powerful and dramatic memoir that shows how the will to live---so painfully refined in the fires of that long-ago death camp---was forged, at last, into truth of soul and wisdom of the heart. On My Way

On My Way to a Happy Life, by New York Times best-selling author Deepak Chopra, is based on his bestseller…
for adults, The Seven Spiritual Laws of Success. In this new book, children will discover seven "Keys" to living a happy and meaningful life. For example, the "Key to All Good Things" teaches kids about giving and receiving, and explains that what they put out to the world is what they will get back. The "Key to Reaching Your Dreams" helps children realize how much power they have over their own lives and where this power comes from. Each of the seven sections in this book presents a Key, as well as a beautifully illustrated example emphasizing how it works in the world. These Keys, which have their origins in ancient Indian teachings, give children what Deepak believes are the most important traits they can possess: the ability to love and have compassion . . . and to spread that love and compassion to others.Dressed to Kill

My fingers close around the trigger. I pause for a split second to think about the bullets I am about…
to spray across the ground. After today, I'll no longer be the new girl.'Captain Charlotte Madison is blonde, beautiful and flies Apache helicopters for a living. She has completed two tours of duty in Afghanistan and is currently fighting on the frontline in her third. DRESSED TO KILL shows us what life is like for a girl in a resolutely male-dominated environment. But she isn't just a woman in a man's world, she's a woman women aspire to be - glamorous as well as brave, and beating the men at their own game. Only a tiny percentage of people can multi-task to the extreme level the aircraft demands, and most airmen who try to qualify as an Apache pilot fail. Full of the exciting, adrenaline-filled action that has made other military memoirs so successful, DRESSED TO KILL is also unique. A highly intelligent and brilliant young woman, Charlotte is Britain's first female Apache pilot, and the first British female pilot to kill in an Apache. We have, quite simply, never seen the landscape of 21st-century frontline conflict from a perspective like hers. DRESSED TO KILL will appeal to anyone interested in current affairs, but it will also speak to a whole generation of young women who will relate to 27-year-old Charlotte in a way they never imagined possible.Rural China: Economic and Social Change in the Late Twentieth Century (Studies On Ethnic Groups In China Ser.)

This book reports the findings of two field studies conducted between 1993 and 2001 in seven townships and six provinces…
in China. The authors describe the process of rural urbanization and its related economic, social, and political changes by focusing mainly on the zhen (town), in addition to administrative offices and companies involved in the local economy, and village committees. The authors show that the social changes resulting from China's economic reforms are occurring mainly from below, and that this process is also resulting in a weakening of the economic and political dominance of the central government. Other changes discussed in this study include the development of new ownership structures and the increasing dominance of the private sector; a shift in the functions of administrative offices as the bureaucracy becomes increasingly business oriented; the rise of a new local elite; a rebirth of traditional social structures (clans, local associations); and the emergence of new interest groups and institutions to represent their needs.
