A proactive and comprehensive guide to help you understand and preserve your fertility options. Does stress affect your fertility? Should…
you be worried about chemicals in your lipstick? Should you avoid materials made with plastic? How does diet affect your chance of conception? Should you be eating only organic food? Does acupuncture increase your chances? How old is too old? In THE WHOLE LIFE FERTILITY PLAN, Kyra Phillips and Dr. Jamie Grifo answer all your pressing questions about fertility health-and address things you didn't even know to ask-whether you're planning to wait to have kids or are starting the process now. Phillips spent hers 20s and 30s building her career, and wasn't ready to start a family until she turned 40. She met with Dr. Grifo, the director at the renowned NYU Fertility Health Center, and after an uphill (but ultimately successful) battle on the road to conception, she learned that there were a number of things-simple things-she could have been doing differently over the years. For too long, women have believed that when it comes to their fertility, their bodies will cooperate when the time is right. But fertility is not unlike heart health; it's important to be proactive. As women are becoming increasingly aware of their fertility health and waiting longer to have children, they are starting to take control of their fertility long before they are ready to start trying. Whether you're in your 20s, 30s or 40s, and want to start a family now or down the line, don't leave it up to chance-educate yourself about what affects your fertility.By Nicole Cormier. 2013

In the…
early 2010s India was one of the top providers of surrogacy services in the world. Drawing on interviews with commissioning parents, surrogates, and egg donors as well as doctors and family members, Daisy Deomampo argues that while the surrogacy industry in India offers a clear example of "stratified reproduction"--the ways in which political, economic, and social forces structure the conditions under which women carry out physical and social reproductive labor--it also complicates that concept as the various actors in this reproductive work struggle to understand their relationships to one another. The book shows how these actors make sense of their connections, illuminating the ways in which kinship ties are challenged, transformed, or reinforced in the context of transnational gestational surrogacy. The volume revisits the concept of stratified reproduction in ways that offer a more robust and nuanced understanding of race and power as ideas about kinship intersect with structures of inequality. It demonstrates that while reproductive actors share a common quest for conception, they make sense of family in the context of globalized assisted reproductive technologies in very different ways. In doing so, Deomampo uncovers the specific racial reproductive imaginaries that underpin the unequal relations at the heart of transnational surrogacy.By Robin Elise Weiss. 2004

Ichiro Suzuki, one of the New York Yankees' newest outfielders and hottest batters, talks about all things baseball in this…
candid book that reveals the inner mind of one of baseball's finest practitioners. Since Ichiro Suzuki joined the Seattle Mariners in 2001, he awed America, earned the respect of his teammates, and won the heart of baseball fans everywhere. But being notoriously private and media-elusive, fans know very little about him. Ichiro proves to be a thoughtful and gifted student of the game. He articulates how, as one of the smaller players in the MLB, it takes something more than power and strength to become a fully realized player and effective team member. Being a baseball superstar on two continents, he reflects on the insane media coverage he endures, as well as his own awe for the game's great players. In this frank conversation, the leading Major League batter breaks down the art and science of the swing. From the Hardcover edition.By Nicole Galan, Richard V. Grazi. 2011

Baseball has life encoded within it as completely as DNA does: the world's deepest wisdom, edgiest laughter, joys and sorrows.…
Among the millions who chase baseball's dream, though, only a few scale the sport's most rarified heights-not only in terms of victory, but in becoming true selfless teams who are vivid role models, in a gritty age beyond the destruction of heroes. With uniquely wild style, the 2010 San Francisco Giants follow the 1969 New York Mets and 1988 Los Angeles Dodgers into history as a World Championship team whose success was supposed to be impossible. Welcome to the place where rally thongs meet Zen lessons, where relentless discipline meets fake beards, where the year-long neighborhood party culminates in a million being blessed by the team's Pope in the name of Mays and McCovey. This is the kind of legendary year for which all baseball lovers live, told from deep inside and beyond. This is the timeless beauty and hilarity of life itself, a rich story even for those who never knew before why to care about the game.By Leonard Cassuto, Stephen Partridge. 2011

of US society for over 200 years, and generates passions and loyalties unique in American society. This Companion examines baseball in culture, baseball as culture, and the game's global identity. Between the chapters are vivid profiles of iconic characters including Babe Ruth, Ichiro and Walter O'Malley. Crucial moments in baseball history are revisited, ranging from the 1919 Black Sox gambling scandal to recent controversies over steroid use. The definitive and dramatic story of the Alex Rodriguez and Biogenesis scandal, written by the reporters who broke and covered…
the storyOn January 29th, 2013, an exposé by Miami New Times reporter Tim Elfrink set the sports world on fire. Elfrink revealed that a Miami clinic, Biogenesis, had been supplying illegal performance enhancing drugs - PEDs - to many of the nation's top baseball stars. One name stood out among all the others: Alex Rodriguez, the highest-earning player in the game.Over the next year and more the story would unravel with incredible details about tanning salon robberies, coded text messages, and furtive steroid injections in the men's room. In late 2013 Alex Rodriguez would be hit with the longest suspension in MLB history, prompting an ugly fight between him and top league brass. Fourteen other players, including superstar Ryan Braun, were also given shorter suspensions. Tony Bosch, Biogenesis's founder, would appear on 60 Minutes in an effort to tell his side of the story. What's already been reported in the press has been fascinating; but the story behind the headlines that Elfrink and Newsday reporter Gus Garcia-Roberts have unearthed is even more dramatic and full of new, shocking details. Using exclusive documents, never-before-reported records and interviews with top sources, this book takes the reader inside drug deals, athletes' mansions, and confidential suspension hearings to tell the true story behind the sport's continuing PED crisis. Both news-breaking sports journalism and wild South Florida noir, Blood Sport is simultaneously a revelatory record of the steroid and PED era's continuing evolution and a call to arms for how to end it - this time, for good.By Reed Mangels. 2011
