“3 Shape Fret-board by Gareth Evans is a thorough workbook for learning to understand and play scales on the guitar.…
The sheer number of different scales and modes may seem overwhelming, but the knowledge of the three basic shapes and a basic understanding of intervals will help a lot in seeing through the jungle. A tour de force of fret-board and scale knowledge.” Mathias Lang, Guitar Teacher & Composer (Netherlands) 3-Shape Fretboard is for intermediate to advanced guitarists interested in learning how to work out guitar scales and arpeggios for themselves. Being able to create guitar scales and arpeggios yourself can give a better understanding, while knowing the logic behind them can make them more meaningful and therefore easier to learn. - The Major Scale It all starts with the major scale, the basis of music. All other scales and arpeggios can be defined in comparison to this scale. The book reflects this in practical terms by categorising the major scale into three different fundamental shapes, which once understood, can be used as templates to figure out other guitar scales and arpeggios.- The CAGED system This system can help to understand the larger CAGED guitar scale shapes in terms of their single octave components. For example, the five CAGED shapes for the major (or minor) pentatonic scales that each contain twelve notes, can be learned as only two shapes of five notes, which are joined end to end to give us the five full CAGED shapes. - What Else? >> Various 3-Note per string scales can be understood as the same combination of single octave component types. >> See how basic major and minor chords are formed from within scales and look at triad and 7th chord based harmony. >> Each scale and arpeggio type has a question, with the answer at the back of the book in guitar tablature. >> 3-Shape Fretboard contains 600 fretboard diagrams. >> Intervals are grouped together in the context of the scales they are intended for, which can provide a foundation for learning intervals individually on the fretboard. "The 3 pattern approach is very interesting and well documented. There is lot's of good material and I like the approach. Very well organised, complete and clear with plenty of diagrams." Fabien Aubry, Composer, Arranger & Producer (Switzerland)The Trouble with Wagner
By Michael P Steinberg. 2018
In this unique and hybrid book, cultural and music historian Michael P. Steinberg combines a close analysis of Wagnerian music…
drama with a personal account of his work as a dramaturg on the bicentennial production of The Ring of the Nibelung for the Teatro alla Scala Milan and the Berlin State Opera. Steinberg shows how Wagner uses the power of a modern mythology to heighten music’s claims to knowledge, thereby fusing not only art and politics, but truth and lies as well. Rather than attempting to separate value and violence, or “the good from the bad,” as much Wagner scholarship as well as popular writing have tended to do, Steinberg proposes that we confront this paradox and look to the capacity of the stage to explore its depths and implications. Drawing on decades of engagement with Wagner and of experience teaching opera across disciplines, The Trouble with Wagner is packed with novel insights for experts and interested readers alike.Dreaming Out Loud

By James A. Steintrager, Michel Chion. 2016
First published in French in 1998, revised in 2010, and appearing here in English for the first time, Michel Chion's…
Sound addresses the philosophical, interpretive, and practical questions that inform our encounters with sound. Chion considers how cultural institutions privilege some sounds above others and how spurious distinctions between noise and sound guide the ways we hear and value certain sounds. He critiques the tenacious tendency to understand sounds in relation to their sources and advocates "acousmatic" listening--listening without visual access to a sound's cause--to disentangle ourselves from auditory habits and prejudices. Yet sound can no more be reduced to mere perceptual phenomena than encapsulated in the sciences of acoustics and physiology. As Chion reminds us and explores in depth, a wide range of linguistic, sensory, cultural, institutional, and media- and technologically-specific factors interact with and shape sonic experiences. Interrogating these interactions, Chion stimulates us to think about how we might open our ears to new sounds, become more nuanced and informed listeners, and more fully understand the links between how we hear and what we do.Sé fuerte. 365 días del año

By Nina Sun Eidsheim. 2018
In The Race of Sound Nina Sun Eidsheim traces the ways in which sonic attributes that might seem natural, such…
as the voice and its qualities, are socially produced. Eidsheim illustrates how listeners measure race through sound and locate racial subjectivities in vocal timbre—the color or tone of a voice. Eidsheim examines singers Marian Anderson, Billie Holiday, and Jimmy Scott as well as the vocal synthesis technology Vocaloid to show how listeners carry a series of assumptions about the nature of the voice and to whom it belongs. Outlining how the voice is linked to ideas of racial essentialism and authenticity, Eidsheim untangles the relationship between race, gender, vocal technique, and timbre while addressing an undertheorized space of racial and ethnic performance. In so doing, she advances our knowledge of the cultural-historical formation of the timbral politics of difference and the ways that comprehending voice remains central to understanding human experience, all the while advocating for a form of listening that would allow us to hear singers in a self-reflexive, denaturalized way.Leona Lewis, Lily Allen, and Colbie Caillat all became famous after their self-produced music was posted on the Internet. By Daniel M Grimley. 2018
Few composers have responded as powerfully to place as Frederick Delius (1862–1934). Born in Yorkshire, Delius resided in the United…
States, Germany, and Scandinavia before settling in France, where he spent the majority of his professional career. This book examines the role of place in selected works, including 'On Hearing the First Cuckoo in Spring', Appalachia, and The Song of the High Hills, reading place as a creative and historically mediated category in his music. Drawing on archival sources, contemporary art, and literature, and more recent writing in cultural geography and the philosophy of place, this is a new interpretation of Delius' work, and he emerges as one of the most original and compelling voices in early twentieth-century music. As the popularity of his music grows, this book challenges the idea of Delius as a large-scale rhapsodic composer, and reveals a richer and more productive relationship between place and music.Beastie Boys Book
By Michael Diamond, Adam Horovitz. 2018
A panoramic experience that tells the story of Beastie Boys, a book as unique as the band itself—by band members…
ADROCK and Mike D, with contributions from Amy Poehler, Colson Whitehead, Spike Jonze, Wes Anderson, Luc Sante, and more. Formed as a New York City hardcore band in 1981, Beastie Boys struck an unlikely path to global hip hop superstardom. Here is their story, told for the first time in the words of the band. Adam “ADROCK” Horovitz and Michael “Mike D” Diamond offer revealing and very funny accounts of their transition from teenage punks to budding rappers; their early collaboration with Russell Simmons and Rick Rubin; the debut album that became the first hip hop record ever to hit #1, Licensed to Ill—and the album’s messy fallout as the band broke with Def Jam; their move to Los Angeles and rebirth with the genre-defying masterpiece Paul’s Boutique; their evolution as musicians and social activists over the course of the classic albums Check Your Head, Ill Communication, and Hello Nasty and the Tibetan Freedom Concert benefits conceived by the late Adam “MCA” Yauch; and more. For more than thirty years, this band has had an inescapable and indelible influence on popular culture. With a style as distinctive and eclectic as a Beastie Boys album, Beastie Boys Book upends the typical music memoir. Alongside the band narrative you will find rare photos, original illustrations, a cookbook by chef Roy Choi, a graphic novel, a map of Beastie Boys’ New York, mixtape playlists, pieces by guest contributors, and many more surprises. A New York Times BestsellerThat Thin, Wild Mercury Sound: Dylan, Nashville, and the Making of Blonde on Blonde
By Daryl Sanders. 2018
That Thin, Wild Mercury Sound is the definitive treatment of Bob Dylan's magnum opus, Blonde on Blonde, not only providing…
the most extensive account of the sessions that produced the trailblazing album, but also setting the record straight on much of the misinformation that has surrounded the story of how the masterpiece came to be made. Including many new details and eyewitness accounts never before published, as well as keen insight into the Nashville cats who helped Dylan reach rare artistic heights, it explores the lasting impact of rock's first double album. Based on exhaustive research and in-depth interviews with the producer, the session musicians, studio personnel, management personnel, and others, Daryl Sanders chronicles the road that took Dylan from New York to Nashville in search of "that thin, wild mercury sound." As Dylan told Playboy in 1978, the closest he ever came to capturing that sound was during the Blonde on Blonde sessions, where the voice of a generation was backed by musicians of the highest order.OAT Prep Plus 2019-2020: 2 Practice Tests + Proven Strategies + Online (Kaplan Test Prep)

By Theodore G. Ammon. 2016
Among the topics explored in David Bowie and Philosophy are the nature of Bowie as an institution; Bowie's work in…
many platforms, including movies and TV; Bowie's spanning of low and high art, and his relation to Warhol; the influence of Buddhism and Kabuki theater; the recurring theme of Bowie as a space alien, including "Space Oddity" and The Man Who Fell to Earth; the dystopian element in Bowie's thinking, displayed in "1984" and the album Outside; the role of fashion in Bowie's creativity; personal identity as preserved over various divergent personae; the aesthetics of theatrical rock and glam rock; Bowie's public identification with bisexuality and his influence within the LGBTQ community.Pervasive themes in Bowie's output include change, time, apocalypse, dancing, mind-body dualism, and spirituality. In the dualistic universe that undergirds his lyrics, body consistently wins over mind, but body is nevertheless on the hook of moral responsibility. There is thus an inherent tension: the overwhelming desires of bodily drives versus the repressive institutions such as church and the omnipresent "They" who would have us do otherwise than our body want. The emergent paradox in Bowie is that for all his alleged sexual indulgences, in the end mind trumps body.Complete String Quartets
By Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart.
This single volume contains all the string quartets of Mozart: the little-known early quartets in an Italianate manner composed between…
1770 and 1773: the six quartets dedicated to Franz Josef Haydn (1782-85); the D Major Quartet (K.499) composed in 1786; and the last three quartets (1789-90) written for the King of Prussia. In addition to the 23 string quartets, the volume contains an alternate slow movement to the G Major Quartet, K. 156.The music is photographically reprinted from the Breitkopf & Härtel printed score, still considered the standard, authoritative edition for the Mozart quartets.Noteheads in this edition have been reproduced in a size large enough to be read easily from a music stand or the keyboard, and margins and spaces between staves are conveniently wide to permit written notes, harmonic analysis, fingerings, and running measure numbers. This edition is practical for study, reference, enjoyment -- virtually any use.Piano Concertos: Nos. 23-27 in Full Score

By Giuseppe Verdi.
One of Verdi's most popular opera, La Traviata is based on La Dame aux Camélias ("Camille"), the novel and play…
by Alexandre Dumas, fils that enthralled Parisian audiences of the 1850s with a stirring portrayal of a beautiful courtesan redeemed by love. With his librettist, Francesco Maria Piave, Verdi transformed the Dumas story of a passionate, ultimately poignant love affair within the intoxicating demimonde of Paris in the mid-1800s to an exciting, deeply moving musical drama.La Traviata fortunately survived its dismal first production in Venice in 1853 to become a worldwide favorite, treasured by musical artists and audiences alike for the lyric beauty of its arias and ensembles, and for the dramatic force and finesse of its orchestral scoring. This full-score edition, designed to provide a lifetime of study and enjoyment, is reproduced from the authoritative edition prepared for G. Ricordi of Milan. It will afford opera lovers a rare opportunity to study intimately Verdi's genius for operatic composition in the early years of its greatest flowering.Symphonies Nos. 8 and 9: In Full Score
