Written by clinicians for clinicians, this handbook summarizes information on diverse iron overload conditions, including their history, signs, symptoms, physical examination findings, genetics, genotype-phenotype correlations, pathophysiology, differential diagnosis and treatment. Most physicians, regardless of specialty, encounter patients with systemic or organ-specific iron overload conditions. This book contains essential information for practising adult and pediatric medical specialists in the fields of hematology, gastroenterology, hepatology, rheumatology, endocrinology, diabetology, neurology, oncology, dermatology and internal medicine. Pathologists, pharmacologists, geneticists, genetic counselors and epidemiologists will also find substantial, up-to-date sections in this handbook that are pertinent to their respective fields of interest.By Biermann, June, Virginia Valentine, Barbara Toohey. 2000

The book is divided in three parts and 14 chapters. An introductory chapter provides an overview of endocrine system, and…
endocrine disruptors, discussing their salient features and presenting a historical perspective of endocrine disruption phenomena. The first part includes seven chapters that cover hormone-signalling mechanisms, followed by various broad classes of putative endocrine disruptors and an introduction to environmental epigenetic modifications. The second part in two chapters focuses on removal processes of various EDCs by biotic and abiotic transformation/ degradation. The third and final part consists of four chapters, embracing themes on finding solutions to environmental EDCs including their detection, regulation, replacement and remediation.By Jill B. Becker, S. Marc Breedlove, David Crews, Margaret M. Mccarthy. 2002
This popular behavioral endocrinology text provides detailed information on what hormones are, how they affect cells, and how such effects…
can alter the behavior of animals, including humans. Presenting a broad continuum of levels of analysis, from molecular to evolutionary, the book discusses how genes work, the structure of cells, the interactions of endocrine organs, the behavior of individuals, the structure of social hierarchies, and the evolution of mating systems. The second edition, while maintaining the strengths of the first edition, has been thoroughly revised to reflect recent developments in genetics and molecular biology and related social concerns. It contains four new chapters: on the use of molecular biology techniques in behavioral endocrinology, on psychoneuroimmunology, on hormonal influences on sensorimotor function, and on cognitive function in nonhuman animals.By Maria I. In the last decades, major advances have been made in assisted reproductive technologies (ART) and the public demand for these…
procedures has increased globally. All ART clinics, from those just starting out to the well established, must employ the latest equipment and implement the best practices, while ensuring that their resources are effectively engaged to optimize patient outcomes. This is a tenet of the fiduciary role of physicians and it is increasingly recognized as a quantifiable goal regulated by formal certifications and accreditations. Quality management protocols such as those proposed by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) are being rapidly adopted as standards of measure. Quality Management in ART Clinics: A Practical Guide provides easily adoptable ways to implement and improve formalized quality management systems. Essential to any clinic to achieve best practices and maintenance of formal regulatory certifications, this book brings together the know-how of experienced opinion leaders operating in key areas worldwide. The book offers an overview of primary regulations in the ART field, with attention to quality management demands, and links specific requirements to practical steps for implementation. Filled with process and procedure examples, flow diagrams and administrative form templates, this book is the first of its kind, gathering the necessary elements for optimizing practice, management, and quality assurance.By William C. Faquin, Douglas P. Clark. 2010

Smith, Alexander S. Kauffman. 2013
Kisspeptin has been shown to be both necessary and sufficient for activation of the reproductive axis, during puberty and later…
in adulthood. This makes kisspeptin a fundamental component of the reproductive axis. Kisspeptin has been deemed the single most potent stimulator of GnRH neurons yet known. The importance of kisspeptin has been documented in humans as well as non-human animal models, ranging from monkeys, sheep, and rodents to numerous fish species, thus signifying a highly conserved nature of its reproductive function. Importantly, kisspeptin neurons seem to mediate many of the regulatory effects of other signals, whether they are metabolic, circadian, hormonal, or stress. This places kisspeptin neurons in a unique position to be key nodal points and conduits for conveying numerous endogenous and exogenous signals to the reproductive axis.By Tamas Horvath, Priyattam Shiromani, Susan Redline, Eve Van Cauter. 2012
Sleep Loss and Obesity: Intersecting Epidemics represents a major contribution to the field of sleep medicine. It is a comprehensive…
review of the neurobiology of sleep, circadian timing and obesity, the deleterious effects of sleep loss and obesity on health, and the worrisome associated social and medical costs in a range of patient populations and overall to society. The number of individuals who are obese has reached alarming levels. As a result, the incidence of Type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disorders, heart disease, and kidney failure have also increased. The surgeon general estimates that the total annual cost of obesity in the US is about $117 billion. This cost is expected to escalate significantly because the number of overweight and obese children is increasing rapidly. Indeed, the new generation is expected to have a shorter life-span then their parents. In addition, sleep loss is emerging as an important contributing factor to obesity. People who sleep less or are sleep deprived tend to eat more, especially carbohydrates, and have a higher body mass index. Increased weight restricts the upper airway, causing obstructive sleep apnea and further sleep loss. In the end there is a vicious cycle of weight gain and sleep loss. In the past few years there has been a tremendous growth in our understanding of brain mechanisms controlling energy metabolism. Interestingly the neurons regulating waking also regulate feeding. There is also a mechanism that regulates the timing of feeding and sleep. In shift-workers this system is likely to be disturbed, and this has an adverse impact on both feeding and sleep. Sleep Loss and Obesity: Intersecting Epidemics is the first title to clearly examine how obesity and sleep loss are interacting epidemics. This fascinating title makes the link between energy metabolism, sleep and circadian timing; identifies poor sleep as a risk-factor for obesity in children and adults and offers treatment strategies for obstructive sleep apnea and obesity. This book will be a vital source of information for all physicians interested in sleep disorders and obesity. It will also be of value to neuroscientists, health system administrators, and policy makers.By Paula Ford-Martin, Jason Baker. 2012

A disease is an interaction between a genome and…
its biotic or abiotic environment and therefore a disease is essentially an ecological process. Good understanding of ecology and a Darwinian way of thinking can give us novel and useful perspectives on health and disease. If we understand the disease process better, we can certainly prevent, control as well as treat diseases in a better way. Although the thought that the origins of obesity and type 2 diabetes (T2D) might lie in our hunter gatherer adaptations is not new, research over the last decade makes us rethink many of the classical concepts. Brain and behavior is increasingly being recognized as central to all the endocrine, metabolic and immunological changes that earmark type 2 diabetes and other metabolic syndrome disorders. A major change in paradigm appears to be on the horizon and the proposed book intends to speed up the paradigm shift by raising important questions, pointing out flaws and inadequacies in the prevalent paradigm and stimulating radical rethinking which would redirect and refine the line of research as well as bring some fundamental changes in drug discovery and clinical practice.
