It provides practical examples…
of successes and failures in implementation, and lessons about the economics and governance of wild resources with global application. CBNRM emerged in the 1980s, encouraging greater local participation to conserve and manage natural and wild resources in the face of increasing encroachment by agricultural and other forms of land use development. This book describes the institutional history of wildlife and the empirical transformation of the wildlife sector on private and communal land, particularly in southern Africa, to develop an alternative paradigm for governing wild resources. With the twin goals of addressing poverty and resource degradation in the world’s extensive agriculturally marginal areas, the author conceptualises this paradigm as the Sustainable Governance Approach, which integrates theories of proprietorship and rights, prices and economics, governance and scale, and adaptive learning. The author then discusses and defines CBNRM, a major subset of this approach. Interweaving theory and practice, he shows that the primary challenges facing CBNRM are the devolution of rights from the centre to marginal communities and the governance of these rights by communities, a challenge which is seldom recognised or addressed. He focuses on this shortcoming, extending and operationalising institutional theory, including Ostrom’s principles of collective action, within the context of cross-scale governance. Based on the author’s extensive experience this book will be key reading for students of natural resource management, sustainable land use, community forestry, conservation, and development. Providing practical but theoretically robust tools for implementing CBNRM it will also appeal to professionals and practitioners working in communities and in conservation and development. An Old-Fashioned Christmas: Favorite Yuletide Quotes and Traditions

of that story to render it a success. Yet one of the most common questions new writers ask professional writers is about how the author wrote their book, what was their process for storytelling (and from this we get plotters and pantsers)? But really the question should be about the general principles and nature of story--does every part of a story have what it needs to keep readers turning the pages (regardless of how the author got there)? Does every scene, every part of the story support the strategic narrative objective of providing new information a scene will inject in the story (the key principle of writing fiction)? In Great Stories Don't Write Themselves, Larry Brooks has developed a series of detailed checklists backed by tutorial content for novelists of every level and genre to refer to as they write regardless of which writing method they prefer. Beginning with the broadest part of story, the early checklists help writers to ensure that their book is based on a premise (aka plot) rather than an idea, or how you can elevate your idea into an actual premise where other story elements can be developed. Great Stories Don't Write Themselves gradually hones in on other story elements like hero empathy, dramatic tension, thematic richness, vicariousness of story, narrative strategy, scene construction, etc. each with their own checklists with specific, actionable items that ensure that key principle (providing information to move the story forward) occurs.Tagalog Verb Dictionary

economic performance since the 1980s can been attributed to a multitude of factors instrumental to the success of the economy, including structural reforms, outward looking export orientated strategies, diversification in the manufacturing, tourism and financial services sectors amongst others, sound economic governance and institutions, and significant investment in human capital. This book attempts to provide a detailed analysis of the various key ingredients which have helped to propel Mauritius to its current status. The various chapters provide important readings for both academics and policymakers, with the final chapter providing key policy strategies which the government needs to implement to help Mauritius graduate to the next level of development: namely to that of a high-income economy and, in moving out of the middle-income trap, laying the foundations for future growth and shared prosperity in the light of both domestic challenges and global constraints.Eccentric Kansas: Tales from Atchison to Winfield

By Sangam Shrestha, Indrajit Pal, Iftekhar Ahmed, Jason Von Meding, Thayaparan Gajendran. 2020
This book includes selected papers presented at the international expert forum on “Mainstreaming Resilience and Disaster Risk Reduction in Education,”…
held at the Asian Institute of Technology, Thailand on 1–2 December 2017. The journey towards disaster risk reduction and resilience requires the participation of a wide array of stakeholders ranging from academics to policymakers, to disaster managers. Given the multifaceted and interdependent nature of disasters, disaster risk reduction and resilience require a multidisciplinary problem-solving approach and evidence-based techniques from the natural, social, engineering, and other relevant sciences.Traditionally, hazard and disaster-related studies have been dominated by the engineering and social science fields. In this regard, the main purpose of this book is to capture the multidisciplinary and multisectoral nature of disaster risk reduction, and to gather existing data, research, conceptual work, and practical cases regarding risk reduction and its ties to sustainable development under a single “umbrella.” Along with the sustainability aspect, the book also links disaster risk reduction with development, technology, governance, education, and climate change, and includes discussions on challenges, solutions, and best practices in the mainstreaming of disaster risk reduction.Bayesian Applications in Pharmaceutical Development (Chapman & Hall/CRC Biostatistics Series)

The cost for bringing new medicine from discovery to market has nearly doubled in the last decade and has now…
reached $2.6 billion. There is an urgent need to make drug development less time-consuming and less costly. Innovative trial designs/ analyses such as the Bayesian approach are essential to meet this need. This book will be the first to provide comprehensive coverage of Bayesian applications across the span of drug development, from discovery, to clinical trial, to manufacturing with practical examples. This book will have a wide appeal to statisticians, scientists, and physicians working in drug development who are motivated to accelerate and streamline the drug development process, as well as students who aspire to work in this field. The advantages of this book are: Provides motivating, worked, practical case examples with easy to grasp models, technical details, and computational codes to run the analyses Balances practical examples with best practices on trial simulation and reporting, as well as regulatory perspectives Chapters written by authors who are individual contributors in their respective topics Dr. Mani Lakshminarayanan is a researcher and statistical consultant with more than 30 years of experience in the pharmaceutical industry. He has published over 50 articles, technical reports, and book chapters besides serving as a referee for several journals. He has a PhD in Statistics from Southern Methodist University, Dallas, Texas and is a Fellow of the American Statistical Association. By Kama Einhorn. 2019
Go inside Wild Animal Sanctuary in Colorado, where you will meet a tiger named Kamal, one of 500 animals who…
has been rescued and now lives in safety. Includes full-color photos, graphics, and maps.Meet Kamal! He’s a tiger, and a resident of Wild Animal Sanctuary (WAS) in Colorado, along with 500 other big animals. Most of these animals have never lived in the wild. They’ve come from roadside zoos, entertainment facilities, and even people’s homes! But even though a tiger can be super adorable as a baby, big (and little) tigers should never be pets. That’s where WAS steps in. Since 1980, WAS has rescued and cared for lions, tigers, bears, leopards, jaguars, mountain lions, and some smaller carnivores such as wolves, bobcats, lynxes, foxes, and coyotes. There are also alpacas and horses, a few emus, several ostriches, one porcupine, one raccoon, and one camel! While it may sound amazing to be surrounded by all these incredible animals of all shapes and sizes, the animals have often come from terrible situations, and lack instincts that would keep them alive if they were able to live where they belong. They have been malnourished, declawed, not properly vetted. They don’t know how to hunt, have never been able to mate (or have mated too much), and, most of all, have no trust in humans. The staff at WAS changes all of that, slowly but surely, getting animals like Kamal the tiger healthy, trusting, and safe again—and as close to wild as they can be. Tigers are very smart, loyal, and independent; Kamal was living in a dog crate with a man in a trailer, posing for pictures. It was no way for a tiger to live. Now Kamal has a habitat with tall prairie grass and a pond the size of a football field. It may not be the wild, but WAS is as close to perfect as it gets.Go, Goats! (True Tales of Rescue)
