A Natural History of Color: The Science Behind What We See and How We See it
By Rob DeSalle. 2020
A star curator at the American Museum of Natural History widens the palette and shows how the physical, natural, and…
cultural context of color are inextricably tied to what we see right before our eyes.Is color a phenomenon of science or a thing of art? Over the years, color has dazzled, enhanced, and clarified the world we see, embraced through the experimental palettes of painting, the advent of the color photograph, Technicolor pictures, color printing, on and on, a vivid and vibrant celebrated continuum. These turns to represent reality in &“living color&” echo our evolutionary reliance on and indeed privileging of color as a complex and vital form of consumption, classification, and creation. It&’s everywhere we look, yet do we really know much of anything about it? Finding color in stars and light, examining the system of classification that determines survival through natural selection, studying the arrival of color in our universe and as a fulcrum for philosophy, DeSalle&’s brilliant A Natural History of Color establishes that an understanding of color on many different levels is at the heart of learning about nature, neurobiology, individualism, even a philosophy of existence. Color and a fine tuned understanding of it is vital to understanding ourselves and our consciousness.Atlas of Swept Source Optical Coherence Tomography

results of OCT in glaucoma patients and glaucoma suspects. After a brief description of how OCT is used in particular situations, chapters depict actual case presentations from authors’ practices with legends that describe the case and how OCT is used to make the diagnosis of glaucoma or glaucoma progression. Emphasis is placed on where OCT can lead the clinician astray by providing false positive or false negative results resulting in misdiagnosis. The intention of the format is to make it easily digestible in a weekend read and make the practitioner comfortable with OCT interpretation. Examples are presented from all of the available OCT manufacturers. The Retina: A Guide to Self-Assessment

By Svetlana Trofimova. 2020
This book discusses the pathology of the retina, and reviews current research on the use of cell replacement therapy and…
short peptides to restore functional activity in retinal neurons. As the book describes, pathologies of the retina, including age-related macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy, and retinitis pigmentosa, present a long-standing challenge in the practice of clinical ophthalmology. Modern treatment for these conditions, which lead to irreversible blindness, includes laser exposure, surgical intervention, and drugs. These treatments aim to reduce the risk of new complications in the eye; pathogenetic therapy of degenerative diseases of the retina is practically absent in current ophthalmic practice. The first section of the book reviews the molecular mechanisms of age-related macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy, and retinitis pigmentosa, and reports on methods of treatment. The second section presents the results of recent experimental studies of the effects of short peptides on pluripotent embryonic cells; on proliferative activity in retinal cells and pigment epithelium; on expression of markers of differentiation or retinal neurons and pigment epithelium; and on the course of hereditary retinal pigmentation in Campbell rats. The third section offers results of clinical studies on the effectiveness of short peptides in patients with macular degeneration, and in patients with retinitis pigmentosa. The author concludes that the regular use of peptides in the treatment of degenerative diseases of the retina can slow the progression of the pathological process and preserve the patient’s vision for some 10-15 years. In addition, in 80 percent of patients, it is possible to increase visual function by increasing visual acuity, improving the boundaries of the visual field and the fundus.Advances in Ocular Imaging in Glaucoma (Essentials in Ophthalmology)

By Gary H. Cassel, Michael D. Billig, Harry G. Randall, Morton F. Goldberg, Wilmer Eye Institute Staff. 1998
When all is well with our eyes, most of us take them for granted. But when our vision is blurred…
or our eyes are itchy and watery, it's hard to concentrate on anything but our eyes. In The Eye Book, three eye care specialists present a comprehensive reference to help readers care for their eyes and protect their vision, with special attention to changes and diseases that occur in the adult years. After detailing how the various parts of the eye work together so we can see, the authors review everything that can go wrong—from myopia, hyperopia, and astigmatism to the major disorders of cataracts, glaucoma, and age-related macular degeneration. They also thoroughly describe each part of the eye and the problems that can develop, from the irritation of itchy eyelids and conjunctivitis to emergency situations such as a detached retina. They describe the signs and symptoms of all these problems and how to deal with them, including when to apply a warm compress—and when to head to the emergency room. Medical and surgical treatment of both minor eye irritations and major diseases are explained in detail, so readers know where to turn and what to expect. The authors also tell readers what happens during an eye examination and how to recognize an eye emergency. They explain all about eyeglasses, including the various kinds of bifocals, and describe the care and maintenance of contact lenses in a way that makes wearing them a viable option for anyone who wishes to do so. They detail the special concerns of people with systemic diseases such as diabetes and indicate how common medications—from antibiotics and antidepressants to tamoxifen—affect the eyes. The pros and cons of refractive surgery are discussed, as are the special problems of people with low vision. An appendix lists medications used to treat eye conditions and the side effects of those medications. The book is fully illustrated with fifty-five line drawings and includes a symptoms index that will direct readers to sections of the book which describe the possible causes of the specific symptoms they are experiencing.Macular Degeneration: The Complete Guide to Saving and Maximizing Your Sight
