Place, Policy and Politics: Do Localities Matter?
By John Urry, Michael Harloe, C. G. Pickvance. 1990
The past ten years have seen local government in the UK facing two major challenges: to survive in the face…
of Thatcher government hostility, and to adapt to enormously powerful forces of economic restructuring which have also been encouraged by government policies. The key aspects of these changing fortunes of British towns explored in this important new book is the ability of individual localities to exercise any control over their own growth and decline. Place, Policy and Politics examines local political initiatives seeking to influence economic and social development in seven sharply contrasting localities, ranging from the outer council estates of Merseyside to the boom towns of Cheltenham and Swindon. Throughout their analysis, the contributors, drawn from a wide range of social science disciplines, address the vital questions in the debate over local policy initiatives, including: * To what extent are localities able to harness trends in the national and international economy to provide jobs and a better standard of living for their inhabitants? * Why do local authorities vary in their capacity to initiate economic policy? * To what extent do national urban and other policies inhibit or encourage their efforts? * How might central government modify its policies to facilitate the prospering of localities?Ecology of Estuaries: Volume 2: Biological Aspects (Crc Marine Science Ser. #1)
By Michael J. Kennish. 1990
The principle objective of this book is to review the biological characteristics of estuaries. The volume has been as a…
text for undergraduates and graduate students as well as reference for scientists conducting research on estuarine systems. And the rapid development of estuarine ecology as a field of scientific inquiry reflects a growing awareness of the immense societal importance of a coastal ecosystem. While the volume of literature on estuaries amassed, scientists deemed it necessary to synthesize the field periodically. Consiquently, several books have been produced in recent years which examine variuous aspects of the disicpline. The Geology of Egypt

By Andras Liptak, Zoltan Szurmai, Janos Harangi, Péter Fügedi. 1990
Chemical synthesis of oligosaccharides is important to organic chemistry because of the critical biological functions of carbohydrates. Unfortunately, no handbook…
has been published on the subject...until now. Volume 1: Disaccharides presents synthetic carbohydrate chemistry, lists the syntheses, and shows the route of each synthesis. Volume 2: Trisaccharides presents schematic figures and references. This series includes all oligosaccharides synthesized between 1960 and 1986. This allows oligosaccharides prepared in their free form to be presented, as well as those produced in protected form. The series contains data regarding glycosylation reaction, namely reaction conditions (solvent, promoter, temperature), the aglycon and the glycosyl donor used, and the structure and physical data of the isolated product. For disaccharides, the names of the reactants and the products are revealed, while with trisaccharides and higher oligomers, schematic figures provide a quick and easy way to access information concerning the entire process. These volumes will provide an important reference source for biochemists, biologists, and organic chemists.Structural Elements Design Manual

terms, and with many examples, Code of Practice methods for sizing structural sections in timber, concrete, masonry and steel. It is the combination into one book of section sizing methods in each of these materials that makes this text so useful....Students will find this an essential support text to the Codes of Practice in their study of element sizing'.Heavy Metals in the Marine Environment
By Robert W. Furness. 1990
The aim of this volume is to draw together state-of-the-art reviews of knowledge onlevels of heavy metals in marine environments…
(particularly in marine animals), the dynamicprocesses in these systems, toxic effects, and threats presented by heavy metals in foods ofmarine origin. All heavy metals, whether biologically essential or not, have the potential to be toxicto organisms at a threshold bioavailability. Such threshold concentrations vary betweenmetals, between species and with the physicochemical characteristics of the medium, somelike copper being particularly toxic even though essential in trace amounts. Responses ofanimals to metals in their medium or food depend to a large extent on the ability of speciesto regulate levels attained in their tissues. Higher animals have the capacity to regulate levelsof many metals, while marine invertebrates can regulate some within certain limits. Whereanimals cannot regulate physiological levels of metals, an alternative strategy is to detoxifyand store metals in relatively harmless forms. Knowledge of the manner in which animals deal with potentially toxic concentrations of heavy metals is of fundamental importance in the assessment of metal pollution by analysis of metal levels in biological samples. The interaction of heavy metals with biological materials is a key theme running through this volume. Toxic effects may be reflected at the individual, population, or ecosystem level, affecting species composition and production levels, or may be of direct dietary significance to man. The global cycling of metals through the marine environment is crucially affected by biological processes.Fibronectin in Health and Disease
By Steven E. Carsons. 1989
This timely volume highlights current knowledge concerning the role of fibronectin in human biology and medicine. It is intended to…
stimulate further investigation in this area. Emphasized are the importance of fibronectin in the interaction between the cell and its environment; and the role of the fibronectin in the determination of cell behavior in normal physiologic processes, in malignant behavior of cells, and in inflammatory disease. This book is valuable to those in the biomedical community interested in fibronectin, the microenvironment and extracellular matrix. It is also important to those interested in the pathobiochemistry of malignant disease and inflammatory disorders.Drug Toxicity and Metabolism in Pediatrics
By Sam Kacew. 1989
The aim of this text is to examine the physiological development of the fetus. It allows the reader to study…
the unique pharmacokinetic and metabolic features of newborns and gives specific examples of drug metabolism in the newborn. The purpose of this book is to enhance the current knowledge of pharmacology of the newborn by observing the embryo and placenta in normal and abnormal development, placental transfer of drugs, metabolic pathways, and metabolism of specific drugs such as theophylline, benzodiazepines, and antibiotics. This is a useful book for those involved in pediatric research, pharmacology, toxicology, experimental therapeutics and biology.Antiviral Compounds From Plants
By James B. Hudson. 1989
This timely publication describes the botanical sources and chemical features of antiviral compounds. It covers their mechanisms of action and…
evaluates their therapeutic potential. Included is a discussion of synthetic analogues where appropriate. The book states that antiviral compounds in so-called medicinal plants may constitute some of their "active ingredients." It explains that many are photosensitizers, their antiviral activity dependent upon or augmented by light of specific wavelengths. This book is of value to microbiologists, phytochemists, virologists, natural-product chemists, ethnobotanists, pharmacologists, medical and veterinary researchers, and others interested in the application of plant compounds to therapy of infectious diseases.Laser Heating of Metals
By A. M. Prokhorov. 1990
In order to ensure efficient use of lasers, and for any large-scale implementation, a thorough knowledge of the fundamental laws…
governing the interaction of radiation with matter is required. Laser Heating of Metals provides a systematic and comprehensive presentation of the fundamental principles underlying the physical and chemical mechanisms governing the interaction of laser radiation with solid targets, and in particular metals in gaseous environments, for a wide range of beam parameters. The authors have been active in the field of interactions between lasers and materials for many years, and this book summarises the results of their work, in particular concerning the action of CO2 lasers on metals. These results are then discussed at some length. Laser Heating of Materials will be of interest to scientists at all levels with an interest in the interaction of radiation with condensed matter, and in particular to those involved in laser cutting and welding etc, and metal-working.Membrane Abnormalities In Hypertension (Routledge Revivals #1)

the 1980’s. Improvements in air and water quality as well as regulation of hazardous waste and toxic substances has led to new policies such as the Superfund Act and a general increase in awareness about environmental issues on a federal level. Placing an emphasis on economics, these papers analyse the effectiveness of environmental policy and progress made in relation to air pollution, water quality, hazardous wastes, toxic substances and enforcement of regulations. This title will be of interest to students of environmental studies.CRC Handbook of Animal Models of Pulmonary Disease: Volume II
