Myths & Legends retells the stories central to every culture that have been passed down from generation to generation for…
thousands of years. Coverage extends from the well-known tales of the Ancient Greeks, which hold the key to the origin of such phrases as "Achille's heel," to the lesser-known, but richly colorful, myths of the Americas and the East. Topic spreads explore characters and stories in terms of their cultural, psychological, and religious meanings and show their power, purpose, and influence both in their own time and in today's world. Feature spreads visit the sacred sites that can still be seen today, and underline the importance of themes that appear across cultures and through the centuries. In looking at such universal themes as creation, heroic trials, tricksters' lessons, and death and the afterlife, Myths & Legends investigates how different cultures have addressed questions such as How was the world created? How did man learn to use fire? and Why do we grow old?By Liz Montegary, Melissa Autumn White. 2015

There are enough special people, wildlife, and natural wonders in the Lone Star State to fill several alphabet books, and…
Sleeping Bear Press has picked out the finest to represent Texas in "L is for Lone Star: A Texas Alphabet." Author Carol Crane has worked for twenty-five years reviewing, lecturing and enjoying children's literature. She is a respected national educational presenter, speaking at state and regional reading conventions across the United States. As a historian, Carol loves to read all historical markers. She is still stopping and reading them across Texas. Illustrator Alan Stacy is a self-taught artist, but his first practical art lessons came at age 6 from his mother, Jeanne, who is a fine artist. His father Fearl, an Air Force pilot and officer, took the family to Germany, Virginia, Alaska and New Mexico before settling in Texas in 1975. The time they spent outdoors siteseeing, camping and hiking in the American West and Pacific Northwest instilled within Alan a profound love of animals and nature, which is reflected in his art. With poems to engage younger readers and text to give further details for older students, "Lone Star" is a fantastic tool for sharing Texan pride with the ones you love. So lasso a copy of "L is for Lone Star" and get ready for a very special ride through the alphabet!By John C. Tibbetts. 2015

Karl N. Llewellyn was one of the founders and major figures of legal realism, and his many keen insights have…
a central place in American law and legal understanding. Key to Llewellyn’s thinking was his conception of rules, put forward in his numerous writings and most famously in his often mischaracterized declaration that they are “pretty playthings.” Previously unpublished, The Theory of Rules is the most cogent presentation of his profound and insightful thinking about the life of rules. This book frames the development of Llewellyn’s thinking and describes the difference between what rules literally prescribe and what is actually done, with the gap explained by a complex array of practices, conventions, professional skills, and idiosyncrasies, most of which are devoted to achieving a law’s larger purpose rather than merely following the letter of a particular rule. Edited, annotated, and with an extensive analytic introduction by leading contemporary legal scholar Frederick Schauer, this rediscovered work contains material not found elsewhere in Llewellyn’s writings and will prove a valuable contribution to the existing literature on legal realism.By Robert F. Mager. 1997

Through an anthropological analysis, this book uncovers life stories and testimonies that relate the processes of separation as a result…
of the constructed political borders of nation states newly founded on the inherited territories of the Ottoman Empire. As it recounts ruptured social, cultural, political, religious, and economic structures and autochthonous bonds, this work not only critically analyzes the making of the Turkish-Syrian border through an exploration of statist discourse, state practices and the state’s diverse apparatuses, but further analyzes the “unmaking” border practices of local subjects in the light of local Kurdish people’s counter perceptions, discourses, family histories, narratives, and daily practices—each of which can be interpreted as a practice of local defiance, resilience, and adaptation in everyday life. The Future of Excellence in Public Relations and Communication Management brings together an outstanding group of public relations scholars and…
practitioners to consider the indelible theory building in public relations of James E. Grunig and Larissa A. Grunig, who with David M. Dozier, produced the 1992 IABC Excellence Study, a benchmark body of work examining best practices in the public relations field. In this assembled collection, editor Elizabeth L. Toth and the contributors show how and in what ways the theories of the Excellence Study have developed and changed. They present research that advances excellence theories, adds new dimensions and directions to the excellence theories, and shows how the excellence study has moved on to a global stage. Toth and her colleagues challenge future researchers to continue the theory-building that will lead to understand how strategic public relations management contributes to organizations and society. Public relations and communication management scholars, in addition to practitioners and graduate students studying these areas, will benefit immensely from the work included here.By Vedi R. This book analyzes the overall effect of American primacy on social and political conflicts in Asia, discussing how the post-Cold…
War American agenda does not promote democratization in the region, in contradiction to one of the major proclaimed aims of the proponents of the Pax Americana. This team of renowned scholars argue that the US agenda can strengthen anti-democratic impulses in Asian societies, exacerbating and complicating existing domestic conflicts and struggles. Empire and Neoliberalism in Asia also examines how the requirements of the War on Terror intersect with, and reinforce, those of transnationalized sections of American capital. Drawing on country case studies, this multidisciplinary book looks at the ramifications of the American Empire for the Asian region and will appeal to anyone interested in Asian politics, international relations, political economy, development studies and sociology.By Donald G. The impetus for literary creation has often been explained as an attempt to transcend the mortality of the human condition…
through a work addressed to future generations. Failing to obtain literal immortality, or to turn their hope towards the spiritual immortality promised by religious systems, literary creators seek a symbolic form of perpetuity granted to the intellectual side of their person in the memory of those not yet born while they write. In this book, Benjamin Hoffmann illuminates the paradoxes inherent in the search for symbolic immortality, arguing that the time has come to find a new answer to the perennial question: Why do people write?Exploring the fields of digital humanities and book history, Hoffmann describes posterity as a network of interconnected memories that constantly evolves by reserving a variable and continuously renegotiated place for works and authors of the past. In other words, the perpetual safeguarding of texts is delegated to a collectivity not only nonexistent at the moment when a writer addresses it, but whose nature is characterized by impermanence and instability. Focusing on key works by Denis Diderot, Étienne-Maurice Falconet, Giacomo Casanova, François-René de Chateaubriand, and Jean-Paul Sartre, Hoffmann considers the authors’ representations of posterity, the representation of authors by posterity, and how to register and preserve works in the network of memories. In doing so, Hoffmann reveals the three great paradoxes in the quest for symbolic immortality: the paradoxes of belief, of identity, and of mediation.Theoretically sophisticated and convincingly argued, this book contends that there is only one truly serious literary problem: the transmission of texts to posterity. It will appeal to specialists in literature, in particular eighteenth-century French literature, as well as scholars and students of philosophy and book history.By A. Sargeant. 2016
Screen Hustles, Grifts and Stings identifies recurrent themes and techniques of the con film, suggests precedents in literature and discusses…
the perennial appeal of the con man for readers and viewers alike. Core studies span from film (Catch Me If You Can, Paper Moon, House of Games) to television (Hustle), from Noir (The Grifters) to Romantic Comedy (Gambit). Frequently, the execution of the con is only finely distinguishable from the conduct of a legitimate profession and, challengingly, a mark is often shown to be culpable in his or her undoing. The best con films, it is suggested, invite re-watching and reward the viewer accordingly: who is complicit and when? How and where is the con achieved? When is the viewer party to the con? And what, if any, moral is to be drawn?By Maureen Conroy, Kevin Sutherland, Thomas W. Farmer, Elizabeth M. Z. Farmer. 2020
The Handbook of Research on Emotional and Behavioral Disorders explores the factors necessary for successful implementation of interventions that foster…
productive relationships and ecologies to establish, reinforce, and sustain adaptive patterns of emotional and behavioral functioning across childhood and into adulthood. Although there has been a concerted focus on developing evidence-based programs and practices to support the needs of children and youth with emotional and behavioral disorders, there has been less emphasis on the developmental, social, and environmental factors that impact the implementation and effectiveness of these approaches. Chapters from leading experts tackle this complexity by drawing on a range of disciplines and perspectives including special education; mental health services; school, clinical, and community psychology; social work; developmental psychology and psychopathology; and prevention science. An essential resource for scholars and students interested in emotional and behavioral disorders, this volume crafts an essential framework to promote developmentally meaningful strategies for children and youth with even the most adverse experiences and intensive support needs.By Simon Susen. 2015

Have you noticed there is a burgeoning take up of visual research in education? Are you considering using visual research…
as part of your next research project or revitalising your research methods course? For researchers who are new to the field of VRMs in education there is little critical literature on the subject. This book addresses the gap in the literature and brings together some of the leading educational researchers engaging and reflecting on the visual from Australia, the UK and Canada. Encapsulated in a single volume, this book sets out theoretically grounded discussions of the possibilities and challenges of the approach for educational researchers around four key themes: images of schooling, performing pedagogy, power and representation and ethical issues in educational research.
