By William Morgan. 2006
When we accept that advertisers and sponsors dictate athletic schedules, that success in sport is measured by revenue, that athletes’…
loyalties lie with their commercial agents instead of teams and that game rules exist to be tested and broken in the pursuit of a win, what does our regard for sport say about the moral and political well-being of our society? Why Sports Morally Matter is a deeply critical examination of pressing ethical issues in sports – and in society as a whole. Exploring the broad historical context of modern America, William J. Morgan argues that the current state of sports is a powerful indictment of our wealth-driven society and hyper-individualistic way of life. Taking on critics from all sides of the political debate, Morgan makes the case that, despite the negating effect of free market values, sport still possesses important features that encourage social, moral and political values crucial to the flourishing of a democratic polity. It is this potential to transform society and the individual that makes sport a key battleground in the struggle for the moral soul of twenty-first century America. The Blind Side: Evolution Of A Game

paid athletes in the National Football League. When we first meet him, he is one of thirteen children by a mother addicted to crack; he does not know his real name, his father, his birthday, or any of the things a child might learn in school - such as, say, how to read or write. Nor has he ever touched a football. What changes? He takes up football, and school, after a rich, Evangelical, Republican family plucks him from the mean streets. Their love is the first great force that alters the world's perception of the boy, whom they adopt. The second force is the evolution of professional football itself into a game where the quarterback must be protected at any cost. Our protagonist turns out to be the priceless combination of size, speed, and agility necessary to guard the quarterback's greatest vulnerability: his blind side.20 pelotazos de esperanza en tiempos de crisis

Exercise and Sport in Feminist Therapy: Constructing Modalities and Assessing Outcomes
By Ruth Hall, Carole Oglesby. 2002
Integrate physical activity into feminist therapy! This book explores the healing use of exercise and sport as a helpful adjunct to…
therapy from several therapeutic orientations within the feminist context. It looks at the ways that feminist orientations challenge the mind-body dichotomy and explores the benefits of integrating physical activity, exercise, and sport into therapy. From the editors: The contributors to this book display a diversity of theory and research approaches, including the integration of the exercise/sport sciences and exercise physiology. This volume is unique in that there has been comparatively little written about the use of exercise in therapy even though exercise is a wonderful and useful intervention tool in the treatment of depression, stress, anxiety disorders, and chronic pain. This book illustrates how exercise can be applied to inpatient and outpatient populations, to the neurotic, and to the chronically mentally ill. Exercise can reduce the incidence of chronic diseases, including diabetes and hypertension, as well as address physical problems such as obesity. Exercise can give one a sense of mastery and self-confidence. As our authors suggest, exercise must be tailored to specific issues and client populations and diagnoses, level of functioning, age, overall health, and cultural context must all be taken into account.Exercise and Sport in Feminist Therapy: Constructing Modalities and Assessing Outcomes examines: the theory supporting the use of physicality to enhance various types of psychotherapypsychoanalytic, cognitive-behavioral, constructivist, narrative, and organismic/systems practical methods of integrating exercise into varied orientations an exercise program for women with fibromyalgia a way to use exercise to enhance rehabilitation from breast cancer the use of exercise in group therapy for women suffering with chronic mental illness the “tend and befriend” model, which can help clients to meet their exercise program responsibilitiesVisual metaphors in a number of Mahayana sutras construct a discourse in which visual perception serves as a model for…
knowledge and enlightenment. In the Perfection of Wisdom (Prajnaparamita) and other Mahayana literature, immediate access to reality is symbolized by vision and set in opposition to language and conceptual thinking, which are construed as obscuring reality. In addition to its philosophical manifestations, the tension between vision and language also functioned as a strategy of legitimation in the struggle of the early heterodox Mahayana movement for authority and legitimacy. This emphasis on vision also served as a resource for the abundant mythical imagery in Mahayana sutras, imagery that is ritualized in Vajrayana visualization practices. McMahan brings a wide range of literature to bear on this issue, Including a rare analysis of the lavish imagery of the Gandavyuha Sutra in its Indian context. He concludes with a discussion of Indian approaches to visuality in the light of some recent discussions of "ocularcentrism" in the west, inviting scholars to expand the current discussion of vision and its roles in constructing epistemic systems and cultural practices beyond its exclusively European and American focus. This book examines the adaptation of Buddhism to the Australian sociocultural context. To gain insight into this process of cross-cultural…
adaptation, issues arising in the development of Diamond Sangha Zen Buddhist groups (one of the largest Zen lineages in the West) in Australia are contextualised within the broader framework of the adaptations of Buddhist teachings and practices in other Westernised countries.
