John Ledyard’s Journal of Captain Cook’s Last Voyage
By John Ledyard, Helen M. Gilkey, Robert M. Storm. 2020
To the Pacific Ocean, and in Quest of a North-West Passage, Between Asia and America; Performed in the Years 1776,…
1777, 1778, and 1779Captain John Cook’s last voyage, his third to the Pacific Northwest, was a remarkable one, for his crew included several literate men, scientists, scholars, and specialists. Anticipating a rush into print after the voyage, the British Admiralty ordered all logbooks, journals, diaries, and notes of the crew members confiscated when the fleet returned to England. It has thus been presumed that John Ledyard, the young Yankee sailor, compiled this Journal from memory or from notes which he secretly retained. Aside from its value as an independent account of the Cook voyage, it was the first writing on the Pacific Northwest to be widely distributed in America.Sam Snead on Golf

By Gary A. Sailes. 1998
Research on African American athletes generally fo-cuses on negative stereotypes of physical prowess, and socially controversial themes. Most studies in-vestigate…
racism, prejudice, discrimination, and ex-ploitation experienced by African American athletes. Many studies contrast African American and white athletes on a number of variables that support pre-vailing elitist stereotypes and denigrate African Ameri-can athletes. But few studies investigate the diverse and complex cultural dichotomies within the infrastruc-ture of sport in the African American community. Gary Sailes maintains that it is crucial to develop a more eclectic and immersed cultural approach when investigating African American involvement in com-petitive sports. The contributors to 'African Americans in Sports' show that there are also intrinsic cultural paradigms that are evident, presenting an informa-tive and interesting narrative regarding African American athletes. The chapters that make up this volume were written by noted scholars who were selected based on their expertise in their specific academic areas. They write about different components of the experience of African American male athletes. Chapters and contributors include: "Race and Athletic Performance: A Physiological Review" by David W. Hunter; "The Athletic Dominance of African Americans--Is There a Genetic Basis?" by Vinay Harpalani; "African American Player Codes on Celebration, Taunting, and Sportsmanlike Conduct" by Vernon L. Andrews; and "Stacking in Major League Baseball" by Earl Smith and C. Keith Harrison. Many chapters were originally published as a special issue of the 'Journal of African American Men.' This volume should be read by all those involved in athletics, as well as by sports sociologists and African American studies scholars. The Wisdom of Theodore Roosevelt
By Donald Davidson. 2003
The men and women who shaped our world—in their own words. The Wisdom Library invites you on a journey through…
the lives and works of the world’s greatest thinkers and leaders. Compiled by scholars, each book presents excerpts from the most important and revealing writings of the most remarkable minds of all time. THE WISDOM OF THEODORE ROOSEVELT “Order without liberty and liberty without order are equally destructive.” Politician. Statesman. Conservationist. Historian. Lawman. Soldier. Writer. Husband. Father. These are some of the hats Theodore Roosevelt wore during the course of an extraordinary public life. Though most famous for his two terms as President of the United States, Roosevelt was one of the true renaissance men of our time, and his writings, both published (he authored more than thirty-five books) and private (he kept up a network of correspondences that produced well over 150,000 letters) provide remarkable insight to the depth of his thinking, and his utter commitment to making his country the best it could be. Edmund Morris’s bestselling biography has brought attention to this complex and often controversial figure who, many believe, created the 20th-century presidency. Now, The Wisdom of Theodore Roosevelt presents a carefully culled selection of his words and ideas on a range of subjects, providing a fascinating portrait of Roosevelt’s personality and beliefs as they evolved over time. By Herbert S. Parmet. 1998
Herbert S. Parmet's Eisenhower and the American Crusades is a major assessment of the American presidency during the critical period…
of America at mid-century. The book follows the career of General Dwight D. Eisenhower from 1952, when he decided to leave his NATO command to campaign for the presidency, to his retirement at Gettysburg nearly nine years later. His entry into politics was well-timed. A mood of conservatism was sweeping the country; surveys indicated that the majority of Americans felt it was time for a change from two decades of executive control 'by those who had permitted events to get out of hand.'Parmet based his study of the Eisenhower years on massive research, conversations with leading figures of the era, and previously unreleased documents. This wealth of material has enabled him to provide answers to questions frequently asked about the thirty-fourth president: Was Eisenhower the kind, fatherly man millions grew up to love on their television or was this an image created by a shrewd politician who knew what the country needed in a trying time?Did he choose Richard Nixon as a running mate or was Nixon forced upon him by political necessities? Was the president intimidated by the appearance of power of Joseph McCarthy, and did the Army-McCarthy hearings influence Eisenhower's decision to involve the United States in Vietnam? Was Eisenhower concerned with the lack of progress in civil rights? Was he the right man for the right time in history or was he merely postponing the major crises of the 1960s?Parmet offers a convincing refutation of the idea of the Eisenhower years as being placid or boring. 'No years that contained McCarthy and McCarthyism, a war in Korea, constant fears of nuclear annihilation, and spreading racial violence, could be so described.' For Parmet, Eisenhower was a stabilizing force in a time of conflict. He may not have been a political genius, but he knew perhaps better than anyone else around him exactly what the people wanted and how they wanted it.Pisgah Inn (Images of America)
By Marci Spencer. 2020
Around 1919, George Weston left New York to return to his boyhood home in the Arden-Fletcher area of Western North…
Carolina. The US government had recently established Pisgah National Forest by purchasing 80,000 acres from Edith, George Vanderbilt's widow; lands deserted by logging companies; and other tracts. While superintendent of farms at the Biltmore Estate, Weston had admired those mountainous landscapes. About two miles from Mount Pisgah and a mile from Vanderbilt's private Buck Spring Lodge, Weston constructed Pisgah Inn on property leased from the US Forest Service. Visitors came from across the country and around the world to stay and dine at Pisgah Inn. By the 1940s, the construction of the Blue Ridge Parkway brought drastic changes across the narrow, isolated Pisgah ridgeline. Today, a more modern 1960s lodge welcomes guests to its grand views and preserves the history, charm, and natural setting of the original Pisgah Inn.The Waupaca Chain o' Lakes (Images of America)
By Zachary Bishop. 2020
The Waupaca Chain o' Lakes are a series of 22 interconnected spring-fed lakes in central Wisconsin. The lakes' crystal clear…
waters, steep tree-covered banks, and other unique natural properties have long attracted people to their shores, starting with the pre-Columbian mound builders and Menominee Indians. European American settlers realized the lakes' potential for recreation in the 1870s and transformed the Chain o' Lakes and nearby city of Waupaca into major vacation destinations for tourists from all over the United States. Numerous businesses and attractions delighted vacationers throughout the late 19th and 20th centuries, including beautiful resort hotels, rustic inns and cottages, religious camps and retreats, family-run restaurants and shops, marinas, tour boats, natural areas, theme parks, the Wisconsin Veterans Home, and even an interurban railway. Thousands of people, especially families, still enjoy the Chain o' Lakes today.Sport, Policy and Politics: A Comparative Analysis

By Samantha N. Sheppard. 2020
Sporting Blackness examines issues of race and representation in sports films, exploring what it means to embody, perform, play out,…
and contest blackness by representations of Black athletes on screen. By presenting new critical terms, Sheppard analyzes not only "skin in the game," or how racial representation shapes the genre’s imagery, but also "skin in the genre," or the formal consequences of blackness on the sport film genre’s modes, codes, and conventions. Through a rich interdisciplinary approach, Sheppard argues that representations of Black sporting bodies contain "critical muscle memories": embodied, kinesthetic, and cinematic histories that go beyond a film’s plot to index, circulate, and reproduce broader narratives about Black sporting and non-sporting experiences in American society.Surfing Virginia Beach and the Outer Banks (Sports)
By Tony Lillis. 2020
Virginia Beach and the Outer Banks share an incredibly rich surfing history. Virginia Beach is home to major surfing institutions…
so iconic and long lasting they are simply referred to as "ECSC," "WRV" and "17th Street." Of course, the Outer Banks has the consistent waves. The barrels. The lighthouse. Its beaches have been the setting for iconic moments in the history of the Eastern Surfing Association. Local surfing historian Tony Lillis chronicles the rich history of surfing along Virginia Beach and the Outer Banks from the early twentieth century, when world travelers brought home tales of Hawaiian surfing, through the heyday of the 1960s and into the twenty-first century.Kenyan Running: Movement Culture, Geography and Global Change
By John Bale, Joe Sang. 1996
1997 British Society of Sports History - Lord Aberdare Literary Prize for Sports HistoryThe record-breaking achievements of Kenyan athletes have…
caught the imagination of the world of sport. How significant really is Kenya in the world of sports? This book, the first to look in detail at the evolution and significance of a single sport in an African country, seeks to answer these and many other questions. Kenyan Running blends history, geography, sociology and anthropology in its quest to describe the emergence of Kenyan athletics from its pre-colonial traditions to its position in the modern world of globalized sport. The authors show the qualities of stamina and long distance running were recognized by early twentieth century travellers in east Africa and how modern running was imposed by colonial administrators and school teachers as a means of social control to replace the indigenous fold traditions.Making Men: Rugby and Masculine Identity (Sport in the Global Society)
By John Nauright, Timothy J. L. Chandler. 1996

man" in societies influenced by the ideals of Victorian upper and middle classes. It shows that rugby has been a means of promoting male exclusivity, but also been a means of cultural incorporation.
