By Nathalie op de Beeck. 2020
In the early decades of the twenty-first century, we are grappling with the legaciesof past centuries and their cascading effects…
upon children and all people. Werealize anew how imperialism, globalization, industrialization, and revolutioncontinue to reshape our world and that of new generations. At a volatile moment, this collection asks how twenty-first century literature and related mediarepresent and shape the contemporary child, childhood, and youth.Because literary representations construct ideal childhoods as well as model therights, privileges, and respect afforded to actual young people, this collectionsurveys examples from popular culture and from scholarly practice. Chaptersinvestigate the human rights of children in literature and international policy; thepotential subjective agency and power of the child; the role models proposed foryoung people; the diverse identities children embody and encounter; and theenvironmental well-being of future human and nonhuman generations. As a snapshot of our developing historical moment, this collection identifiesemergent trends, considers theories and critiques of childhood and literature, and observes how new technologies and paradigms are destabilizing pastconventions of storytelling and lived experience.By James F. Masterson. 1985
This volume was first published in 1967 with an initial reissue in 1984. It is addressed to students of adolescent…
psychopathology in general and to students of the borderline and narcissistic personality disorders in particular. It was the first systematic research to challenge and place in perspective the then prevalent "adolescent turmoil" theory: the growth process of adolescence was producing symptoms which would subside as the patient grew older. This view had led to a tendency to deny the seriousness of psychopathology and, therefore, to postpone necessary treatment.By E. W. Tomlin. 1985
Originally published in 1985, this distinguished and constructive critique of modern culture introduced into our language a brand-new term, ‘PN’,…
standing for ‘psychic nutrition’, which at the time promised to become a household expression. Drawing on his first-hand knowledge of oriental civilizations; on discoveries of Jung, especially his concept of psychic energy; on the ideas of the cultural anthropologists; and not least on the New Science implicit in microphysics and microbiology, E.W.F. Tomlin, whose philosophical books have been translated into several languages, shows how the human psyche requires its own kind of nourishment just as urgently as the body needs food. In the industrial societies of the West, this need has often been ignored. Reformers, in their earnest though sometimes inept endeavours to create a better world, have too often exposed us to the dangers of psychic starvation and the noxious effects of what may be called ‘neg-PN’. Here lie the roots of violence and the lack of direction so conspicuously afflicting modern man and woman. Examples of PN, positive and negative, are given, lending the book an immediacy and practical character often lacking in studies of this kind. In the new scientific approach here adopted, the divisions between matter and life, and life and mind, are discarded, and the old conflict between science and religion shown to belong to an out-of-date world view. The result is a radical reappraisal of the nature and function of religion and art, the two great psychic forces in history. Indeed, the present crisis is shown to originate in the psychic sphere rather than in the political and economic order. Deeply felt and elegantly written, yet not lacking in wit and humour, the book ends with some concrete ideas on how a more balanced culture may be achieved.By Elizabeth Stanko. 1985
First published in 1985, this book looks at the victimisation of women, focusing on the four main areas of incest,…
rape, physical violence, and sexual harassment. Elizabeth Stanko’s work is based on original research and interviews with police forces, victims and others involved. It examines women’s experiences of male violence and looks at the reactions of those to whom women complain, including police officers, judges and union officials. The book analyses the decision making process of the criminal justice system and of administrative personnel at the time of publication, and Stanko shows how such institutions can be carriers of a male point of view.By Sergey Petoukhov, Matthew He, Zhengbing Hu, Ivan Dychka. 2021

The 1980s saw an alarming revival of protectionism among Western countries, as a result of a decade of persistent economic…
crises, slow growth, industrial decline and rising unemployment. The two major actors, the US and the European Community, between them bore the major responsibility for the breakdown of the liberal world trading system. Protection in the 1970s and 1980s took the form of replacing free international markets by bilateral agreements. This book, first published in 1986, examines the European Community’s Generalized System of Preferences, whereby the manufactured exports of developing nations would have duty-free access to the markets of the EEC, and the consequences to this System of the new protectionism.By Abraham H. Halevy. 1986

This volume addresses three major issues: What are the circumstances in which people elect to protest; what are the forms…
of such action; and how do people organize to do so? Phrased differently, what are the contexts of protest (collective behavior), personal readiness for protest (conversion), and finally joining together for protest in movement organizations and movement strategies. The key to the book's value is its theoretical sophistication. These studies address in a systematic way fundamental alternatives to organizing protests and outline in detail options for structuring units of social movement. The author deals especially with movement organization locals, including "corps" and "cells." Such units are examined in terms of how they coexist and how they exist sequentially through time. Several case studies of movement organization are included, such as the Unification Church and Mankind United. The work places a heavy emphasis on protest action or strategy. In the final section four chapters examine the entire gamut of strategic possibilities, ranging from polite politics to violent action. Protest is a distinctive and complex strategy. The work carefully evaluates varieties of protest that have become significant in the 1980s. In each section of the book Lofland draws out underlying themes and issues that interrelate the studies and places protest in the larger context of political and social change and theories to date.By Glen W. Davidson. 1985

This book focuses on novel and state-of-the-art scientific work in the area of detection and prediction techniques using information found…
generally in graphs and particularly in social networks. Community detection techniques are presented in diverse contexts and for different applications while prediction methods for structured and unstructured data are applied to a variety of fields such as financial systems, security forums, and social networks. The rest of the book focuses on graph-based techniques for data analysis such as graph clustering and edge sampling. The research presented in this volume was selected based on solid reviews from the IEEE/ACM International Conference on Advances in Social Networks, Analysis, and Mining (ASONAM '17). Chapters were then improved and extended substantially, and the final versions were rigorously reviewed and revised to meet the series standards. This book will appeal to practitioners, researchers and students in the field.By Cynthia Schellenbach. 1986

Critiques of traditional urban planning are numerous. The debate about direction within the profession and why urban planning seems to…
be in a state of despair continues. However, and as Milan J. Dluhy and Kan Chen note, the more critical issue is the future direction of planning, particularly interdisciplinary planning. In this regard, they note five principal areas of concern: planning is action research, planning is knowledge driven, planning is both process and technologically oriented, planning is interdisciplinary, and planning is adaptive to emerging concerns.Reviewing the literature and empirical studies on roles and attitudes, the editors note that planners seem committed to symbols and expressions of advocacy as well as traditional planning doctrine. This emphasizes rational planning and neutral policy roles for practitioners. Without a guiding theory to give a unified approach to practice, planners remain free to select the role most compatible with their personal background and training. This volume asserts that diversity need not be a drawback as long as careful analysis and open planning processes are used. This title will be an invaluable resource. Part I illustrates the critical dilemmas in planning, Part II focuses on planning skills and orientations, the third part focuses sharply on planning roles, while the final section answers a fundamental question: can interdisciplinary planning offer a more useful perspective than others on how to achieve more successful planning outcomes?First published in 1985, this book explores the ‘lived culture’ of urban black students in a community college located in…
a large northeastern city in the United States. The author immersed herself in the institution she was studying for a full academic year, exploring both the direct experiences of education, and the way these experiences were worked over and through the praxis of cultural discourse. She examines in detail the messages of the school, including the ‘hidden curriculum’ and faculty perspectives, as well as the way these messages are transformed at a cultural level. The resulting work provides a major contribution to a number of debates on education and cultural and economic reproduction, as well as a leap forward in our understanding of the role schooling plays in the re-creation of race and class antagonisms. This work will be of great interest to anyone working with minorities, particularly in the context of education.By Michael D. Coogan, Pheme Perkins, Carol A. Newsom, Marc Z. Brettler. 2010

On its publication in 1985, this book offered a fresh analysis of the problems faced by the Soviet economy by focussing…
on the key issues in the economic planning system. David Dyker considers the available options for reform during the 1980s and the most likely developments. Discussing the origins of the Soviet economic planning system and the theories which founded it, previous attempts to reform the organisational structure and the particular problem of agriculture, Dyker presents a picture of an increasingly bleak future for the Soviet economy. This is a comprehensive title written by a renowned expert on the Soviet economy, which will be of particular value to students and academics researching the political and economic development and history of the Soviet Union.
