By Stephen E. Mawdsley. 2016
Today, when many parents seem reluctant to have their children vaccinated, even with long proven medications, the Salk vaccine trial,…
which enrolled millions of healthy children to test an unproven medical intervention, seems nothing short of astonishing. In Selling Science, medical historian Stephen E. Mawdsley recounts the untold story of the first large clinical trial to control polio using healthy children--55,000 healthy children--revealing how this long-forgotten incident cleared the path for Salk's later trial. Mawdsley describes how, in the early 1950s, Dr. William Hammon and the National Foundation for Infantile Paralysis launched a pioneering medical experiment on a previously untried scale. Conducted on over 55,000 healthy children in Texas, Utah, Iowa, and Nebraska, this landmark study assessed the safety and effectiveness of a blood component, gamma globulin, to prevent paralytic polio. The value of the proposed experiment was questioned by many prominent health professionals as it harbored potential health risks, but as Mawdsley points out, compromise and coercion moved it forward. And though the trial returned dubious results, it was presented to the public as a triumph and used to justify a federally sanctioned mass immunization study on thousands of families between 1953 and 1954. Indeed, the concept, conduct, and outcome of the GG study were sold to health professionals, medical researchers, and the public at each stage. At a time when most Americans trusted scientists, their mutual encounter under the auspices of conquering disease was shaped by politics, marketing, and at times, deception. Drawing on oral history interviews, medical journals, newspapers, meeting minutes, and private institutional records, Selling Science sheds light on the ethics of scientific conduct, and on the power of marketing to shape public opinion about medical experimentation. An Introduction to Global Health Ethics
By Andrew D. Pinto, Ross E. Upshur. 2011
The field of global health is expanding rapidly. An increasing number of trainees are studying and working with marginalized populations,…
often within low and middle-income countries. Such endeavours are beset by ethical dilemmas: mitigating power differentials, addressing cultural differences in how health and illness are viewed, and obtaining individual and community consent in research. This introductory textbook supports students to understand and work through key areas of concern, assisting them in moving towards a more critical view of global health practise. Divided into two sections covering the theory and practice of global health ethics, the text begins by looking at definitions of global health and the field’s historical context. It draws on anti-colonial perspectives concepts, developing social justice and solidarity as key principles to guide students. The second part focuses on ethical challenges students may face in clinical experiences or research. Topics such as working with indigenous communities, the politics of global health governance, and the ethical challenges of advocacy are explored using a case study approach. An Introduction to Global Health Ethics includes recommended resources and further readings, and is ideal for students from a range of disciplines – including public health, medicine, nursing, law and development studies – who are undertaking undergraduate and graduate courses in ethics or placements overseas.Eat London: All About Food

By Institute of Medicine, Board on Population Health and Public Health Practice, Theresa M. Wizeman. 2012
The number of women participating in clinical trials has increased during the last two decades but women are still…
underrepresented in clinical trials in general Some of the overall increase can be attributed to the greater number of women-only trials of therapies for diseases that affect only women Even when women are included in clinical trials the results are often not analyzed separately by sex On August 30 2011 the Institute of Medicine IOM Board on Population Health and Public Health Practice hosted the workshop Sex-Specific Reporting of Scientific Research The workshop explored the need for sex-specific reporting of scientific results potential barriers and unintended consequences of sex-specific reporting of scientific results experiences of journals that have implemented sex-specific requirements including the challenges and benefits of such editorial policies and steps to facilitate the reporting of sex-specific results Presenters and participants included current and former editors of scientific journals researchers and scientists and policymakers from government industry and nonprofit organizations Presentations and discussions highlighted the importance to both women and men of having sex-specific data the problems with sample size and financial constraints for conducting the research the appropriateness of sex-specific analyses and the limitations of journal policies to change experimental designs Sex-Specific Reporting of Scientific Research summarizes the presentations and discussions by the expert panelists during the IOM workshop The workshop s first session focused on why sex-specific reporting is important Panelists highlighted historical and current events that have hindered or helped to advance the study of women In the next session panelists in academe discussed the challenges of collecting analyzing and reporting sex-specific data from the researcher s perspective That was followed by two panels of leading journal editors who shared their experiences in developing and implementing editorial policies and the implications of sex-specific reporting policies for journalsRU486: Misconceptions, Myths and Morals

to women around the world, this book reviews the unusual history of the French abortion pill RU-486. Critical of the positive claims made for RU-486, it argues that its promotion is filled with myths and misconceptions. Scrutinizing the science and politics behind RU-486, this account examines how the pill benefits the medical profession, drug companies, and government health economies and offers no advantage to women. Topics include the safety and effectiveness of RU-486, whether or not RU-486 privatizes and de-medicalizes abortion, and the dangerous effects of prostaglandins. This updated edition includes a new introduction.Kevin Guest House (Images of Modern America)

That's not a…
theoretical question for journalist Lizzie Stark's relatives, who grapple with the horrific legacy of cancer built into the family DNA. It is a BRCA mutation that has robbed most of her female relatives of breasts, ovaries, peace of mind, or life itself. In Pandora's DNA, Stark uses her family's experience to frame a larger story about the so-called breast cancer genes, exploring the morass of legal quandaries, scientific developments, medical breakthroughs, and ethical concerns that surround the BRCA mutations. She tells of the troubling history of prophylactic surgery and the storied origins of the boob job and relates the landmark lawsuit against Myriad Genetics, which held patents on the BRCA genes every human carries in their body until the Supreme Court overturned them in 2013. Although a genetic test for cancer risk may sound like the height of scientific development, the treatment remains crude and barbaric. Through her own experience, Stark shows what it's like to live in a brave new world where gazing into a crystal ball of genetics has many unintended consequences.Rheumatoid Arthritis: A Self-help Guide To Getting On With Your Life

A behind-the-scenes view of cutting-edge medical research and discoveries that are helping people with disabilities regain control, this book is…
an insightful look into the possibilities of technology and the associated ethical, political, social, and financial controversies. By Andrew Skerritt. 2011
By focusing on a small town in South Carolina, this study of the HIV/AIDS crisis in the South reveals the…
hard truths of an ongoing and complex issue. Skerritt contends that the United States has failed to adequately address the threat of HIV and AIDS in communities of color and that taboos about love, race, and sexuality--combined with Southern conservatism, white privilege, and black oppression--continue to create an unacceptable death toll. The heartbreak of America's failure comes alive through case studies of individuals such as Carolyn, a wild child whose rebellion coincided with the advent of AIDS, and Nita, a young woman searching for love and trapped in an abusive relationship. The results are most visible at the town's segregated burial ground where dozens of young black men and women who have died from AIDS are laid to rest. Not only a call to action and awareness, this is a true story of how persons of faith, enduring love, and limitless forgiveness can inspire others by serving as guides for poor communities facing a public health threat burdened with conflicting moral and social conventions.Clinical Fluid Therapy in the Perioperative Setting

By Alexander Kelle, Markus Schmidt, Agomoni Ganguli-Mitra, Huib De Vriend. 2009
Synthetic biology is becoming one of the most dynamic new fields of biology, with the potential to revolutionize the way…
we do biotechnology today. By applying the toolbox of engineering disciplines to biology, a whole set of potential applications become possible ranging very widely across scientific and engineering disciplines. Some of the potential benefits of synthetic biology, such as the development of low-cost drugs or the production of chemicals and energy by engineered bacteria are enormous. There are, however, also potential and perceived risks due to deliberate or accidental damage. Also, ethical issues of synthetic biology just start being explored, with hardly any ethicists specifically focusing on the area of synthetic biology. This book will be the first of its kind focusing particularly on the safety, security and ethical concerns and other relevant societal aspects of this new emerging field. The foreseen impact of this book will be to stimulate a debate on these societal issues at an early stage. Past experiences, especially in the field of GM-crops and stem cells, have shown the importance of an early societal debate. The community and informed stakeholders recognize this need, but up to now discussions are fragmentary. This book will be the first comprehensive overview on relevant societal issues of synthetic biology, setting the scene for further important discussions within the scientific community and with civil society. The Villa: Escape to Sicily with the Number One Bestseller
