Greystone Park Psychiatric Hospital (Images of America)
By Christina Mathews, Robert Kirkbride, Rusty Tagliareni. 2016
The Greystone Park Psychiatric Hospital was more than a building; it embodied an entire era of uniquely American history, from…
the unparalleled humanitarian efforts of Dorothea Dix to the revolutionary architectural concepts of Thomas Story Kirkbride. After well over a century of service, Greystone was left abandoned in 2008. From the time it closed until its demolition in 2015, Greystone became the focal point of a passionate preservation effort that drew national attention and served to spark the public's interest in historical asylum preservation. Many of the images contained in this book were rescued from the basement of Greystone in 2002 and have never been seen by the public. They appear courtesy of the Morris Plains Museum and its staff, who spent many hours digitally archiving the photographs so that future generations may better know Greystone's history.Rick Steves Best of England (Rick Steves)

be hard to know where to start with your diet. There are so many different cookbooks and recommendations, and few provide different options for different situations. That's where The Hashimoto's Healing Diet comes in!In this book, Marc Ryan, L.Ac., will help you deal with the changes that are frequently involved with chronic conditions like Hashimoto's. He shows you how to use dietary inventions strategically, so that you can adapt your plan in different circumstances. He'll guide you through the various complications associated with Hashimoto's, and the recommended diet and treatment protocols for each one, including Candida, histamine intolerance, intestinal problems, Epstein-Barr virus, and more. In much the same way Marc explored the five elements of thyroid health in his first book, How to Heal Hashimoto's, he will explore the five elements of digestive health here (earth, metal, wood, water, and fire). You'll learn a brief history of Chinese medicine and "yin fire," one of the most important concepts in internal diseases. Finally, Marc offers an action plan for readers to continue on their journey toward total wellness. This self help manual is for those for whom depression arises from the impact of exceptional circumstances such as childbirth…

By Vissanu Zumitzavan, Jonathan Michie. 2015
This book presents unique management perspectives from Thailand's Healthcare Industry. It focuses on the areas of Personal Knowledge Management, Leadership…
Styles and Organisational Performance. The book highlights the various business challenges that organisations face in the context of globalisation, which itself has produced new opportunities and difficulties alike. In addition, it also elaborates on how even large organisations with strong histories can no longer compete unless they are willing to adapt to changing conditions. Demonstrating how transferring and encouraging knowledge within an organisation can generate approaches that promote its continuing success, the book mainly focuses on the perspective of the Resource Based View, a broadly recognised method for maintaining the competitive advantages of an organisation. It also stresses the importance of making the most use of organisational resources. The book offers a valuable reference work, not only for practitioners and academic researchers in the fields of Business & Management but also for students taking Leadership Management, Organisational Learning and Organisational Performance Appraisal courses, serving as a sourcebook for the principles of successful management.Lactoferrin and its Role in Wound Healing
By Yoshiharu Takayama. 2011
Lactoferrin is an iron-binding glycoprotein belonging to the transferrin family. It acts as a defense in host animals against microbes…
and viruses, since it has a broad spectrum of antimicrobial and antiviral activities. Lactoferrin has been shown to regulate the growth and differentiation of many types of cells. The results of recent studies indicate that lactoferrin is a potent regulator of dermal fibroblasts, and promotes cutaneous wound healing. The collagen gel contraction, a model of wound contraction during wound healing process, and migration of human fibroblasts were enhanced by lactoferrin. LRP-1 (LDL Receptor related Protein-1) acts as a signaling receptor for lactoferrin that mediate fibroblast response to lactoferrin by activating ERK/MAPK signaling pathway. In addition, lactoferrin promotes biosynthesis of extracellular matrix (ECM) component such as type-I collagen and hyaluronan. Hyaluronan is a major component of ECM in connective tissue and promotes wound healing. The promoting effect of lactoferrin on hyaluronan production was accompanied by promotion of HAS2 (hyaluronan synthase 2) expression. These observations suggest that lactoferrin promotes the wound healing by providing an ECM that promotes fibroblast migration. Lactoferrin is also known for its anti-inflammatory and immune modulating properties. According to recent in vivo study, lactoferrin promotes wound repair by promoting the early inflammatory phase of wound healing. Based on this, recombinant human lactoferrin was subsequently tested clinically in a Phase II trial in patients with diabetic ulcers and was found to be effective. Lactoferrin should be further evaluated in patients with diabetic and other types of ulcers.Neighbourhood Effects or Neighbourhood Based Problems?: A Policy Context
By Nick Bailey, Duncan Maclennan, Ludi Simpson, David Manley. 2014
This edited volume critically examines the link between area based policies, neighbourhood based problems, and neighbourhood effects: the idea that…
living in disadvantaged neighbourhoods has a negative effect on residents' life chances over and above the effect of their individual characteristics. Over the last few decades, Western governments have persistently pursued area based policies to fight such effects, despite a lack of evidence that they exist, or that these policies make a difference. The first part of this book presents case studies of perceived neighbourhood based problems in the domains of crime; health; educational outcomes; and employment. The second part of the book presents an international overview of the policies that different governments have implemented in response to these neighbourhood based problems, and discusses the theoretical and conceptual processes behind place based policy making. Case studies are drawn from a diverse range of countries including the United Kingdom, The Netherlands, Australia, Canada, and the USA.What's that pig outdoors?

verbal of professions as a literary journalist. This new and expanded edition of Kisor's engrossing memoir recounts his life as a deaf person in a hearing world and addresses heartening changes over the last two decades due to the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990 and advancements in cochlear implants and modes of communication. _x000B_Kisor tells of his parents' drive to raise him as a member of the hearing and speaking world by teaching him effective lip-reading skills at a young age and encouraging him to communicate with his hearing peers. _x000B_Kisor updates the continuing disagreements between those who advocate sign language and those who practice speech and lip-reading, discusses the increased acceptance of deaf people's abilities and idiosyncrasies, and considers technological advancements that have enabled deaf people to communicate with the hearing world on its own terms.Nuclear Medicine Imaging: An Encyclopedic Dictionary
By Joseph A Thie. 2011
The rapidly growing area of nuclear medicine imaging receives only limited attention in broad-based medical dictionaries. This encyclopedic dictionary is…
intended to fill the gap. More than 400 entries of between one and three paragraphs are included, defining and carefully explaining terms in an appropriate degree of detail. The dictionary encompasses concepts used in planar, SPECT, and PET imaging protocols and covers both scanner operations and popular data analysis approaches. In spite of the mathematical complexities in the acquisition and analysis of images, the explanations given are easy to understand and many helpful concrete examples are provided. The book will be ideal for those who wish to obtain a rapid grasp of a concept beyond a definition of a few words but do not have the time to search the reference literature. The almost tutorial-like style accommodates the needs of students, nuclear medicine technologists, and varieties of other medical professionals.Innovationen verbreiten, optimieren und evaluieren
By Norbert Donner-Banzhoff, Stefan Bösner. 2012
Threshold: Emergency Responders On The U.S. - Mexico Border
By Ieva Jusionyte. 2018
Emergency responders on the US-Mexico border operate at the edges of two states. They rush patients to hospitals across country…
lines, tend to the broken bones of migrants who jump over the wall, and put out fires that know no national boundaries. Paramedics and firefighters on both sides of the border are tasked with saving lives and preventing disasters in the harsh terrain at the center of divisive national debates. Ieva Jusionyte’s firsthand experience as an emergency responder provides the background for her gripping examination of the politics of injury and rescue in the militarized region surrounding the US-Mexico border. Operating in this area, firefighters and paramedics are torn between their mandate as frontline state actors and their responsibility as professional rescuers, between the limits of law and pull of ethics. From this vantage they witness what unfolds when territorial sovereignty, tactical infrastructure, and the natural environment collide. Jusionyte reveals the binational brotherhood that forms in this crucible to stand in the way of catastrophe. Through beautiful ethnography and a uniquely personal perspective, Threshold provides a new way to understand politicized issues ranging from border security and undocumented migration to public access to healthcare today.Post-Anesthesia Care

presentation of perioperative complications is important to achieving optimal outcomes. By taking an approach to complications based upon signs and symptoms seen in the early post-operative period among adult patients undergoing non-cardiac surgery, this book aids the practitioner in the clinical management of surgical patients during the often turbulent hours after surgery. After a brief introduction to PACU organization, this manual discusses the common and most serious symptoms encountered in the post-operative patient, giving guidance on diagnosis of the underlying disorder and the treatment options available. The book also includes chapters dedicated to subspecialty patients, including patients requiring post-operative mechanical ventilation, pediatric patients, patients with implantable cardiac devices, morbidly obese patients and the complex pain patient. This practical manual is essential reading for all practitioners working in the PACU environment.Omgaan met een scheiding

By Emil DeAndreis. 2017
Hard to Grip, a memoir by native San Franciscan Emil DeAndreis is a love story to baseball that is also…
a frank, and humorous account of the author’s struggles with rheumatoid arthritis, the chronic illness that threw a curve into his life and dashed the hopes of becoming a professional pitcher in the major leagues that he had harbored since he was old enough to throw a ball. Scarcely out of Lowell high school where he was an up-and-coming star pitcher for his two-time championship team, Emil discovered the early signs of the disease were hampering his ability to compete, and it became increasingly evident to him as he played throughout his freshman and sophomore years in the D1 Leagues for University of Hawaii/Hilo that his lifelong dream to go pro was to be only that—a dream. Even as he was being courted by the big leagues and about to sign on to play pro ball in Europe. Hard to Grip is a personable, humor-filled and inspirational story of a robust, athletic young man who, barely into his twenties, must confront the reality of living with a physical illness, and the crushing disappointment of not being able to fulfill his lifelong wish, but, who at the same time learns to embrace that one thing he loves in order to forge a new life with a different perspective: as a high school coach for his alma mater, Lowell. Moreover, it is also a story of love for a girl, for his friends, for his family, hometown of San Francisco and the game itself.
