Multiculturalism in Turkey: The Kurds and the State
By Durukan Kuzu. 2018
Over the past couple of decades, there have been many efforts to seek a solution to the often violent situation…
in which Kurdish citizens of Turkey find themselves. These efforts have included a gradual programme of political recognition and multiculturalism. Here, Durukan Kuzu examines the case of Kurdish citizens in Turkey through the lens of the global debate on multiculturalism, exploring the limitations of these policies. He thereby challenges the conventional thinking about national minorities and their autonomy, and offers a scientifically grounded comparative framework for the study of multiculturalism. Through comparison of the situation of Kurds in Turkey with that of other national minorities - such as the Flemish in Belgium, Québécois in Canada, Corsicans in France, and Muslims in Greece - the reader is invited to question in what forms multiculturalism can work for different national minorities. A bottom-up approach is used to offer a fresh insight into the Kurdish community and to highlight conflicting views about which form the politics of recognition could take. Approaches multiculturalism in Turkey in an original light, going beyond existing approaches to offer a new critical perspective; Bridges the gap between political theory and social science in the context of self-government and national minorities; Addresses the political accommodation of the Kurds in Turkey.Recursion across Domains
By Tom Roeper, Andrew Nevins, Luiz Amaral, Marcus Maia. 2018
Recursion and self-embedding are at the heart of our ability to formulate our thoughts, articulate our imagination and share with…
other human beings. Nonetheless, controversy exists over the extent to which recursion is shared across all domains of syntax. A collection of 18 studies are presented here on the central linguistic property of recursion, examining a range of constructions in over a dozen languages representing great areal, typological and genetic diversity and spanning wide latitudes. The volume expands the topic to include prepositional phrases, possessives, adjectives, and relative clauses - our many vehicles to express creative thought - to provide a critical perspective on claims about how recursion connects to broader aspects of the mind. Parallel explorations across language families, literate and non-literate societies, children and adults are investigated and constitutes a new step in the generative tradition by simultaneously focusing on formal theory, acquisition and experimentation, and ecologically-sensitive fieldwork, and initiates a new community where these diverse experts collaborate.Managing Uncertainty in Crisis
By Xiaoli Lu. 2017

formulates and applies an institutional sense-making model to explain the selection of strategies for coping with uncertainties during crises to answer the question why some organizations select a rule-based strategy to cope with uncertainties whereas others pursue a more ad hoc-based strategy It finds that the level of institutionalization does not affect strategy selection in the initial phase of responding to crises that three rigidity effects can be identified in the selection of sense-making strategies once organizations have faced the failure of their selected strategies that discontinuities in the feedback loop of sense-making do not necessarily move organizations to switch their sense-making strategies but interact with institutionalization to contribute to switching sense-making strategies This book bridges the gap between institutional thinking and crisis management theorizing A major step forward in the world of crisis management studies ----Professor Arjen Boin Leiden University the Netherlands In a world of increasingly complex sociotechnical systems interacting in high-risk environments Professor Lu s analysis of how organizations manage uncertainty is both timely and profound ----Professor Louise K Comfort Director Center for Disaster Management University of Pittsburgh USA Prof Lu greatly enhances our understanding of how organizations cope with uncertainty and make sense of their challenges under the pressures of catastrophe ----Dr Arnold M Howitt Faculty Co-Director Program on Crisis Leadership Harvard Kennedy School USA This book provides not only a theory of crisis management but also a key concept around which research and practice can be conducted ----Professor Naim Kapucu Director of School of Public Administration University of Central Florida USA A generic institutional model for analyzing and managing hazards disasters and crises worldwide ----Professor Joop Koppenjan Erasmus University Rotterdam the Netherlands This book has done an excellent job in opening the black box of how organizations make sense of the crisis situations they face and develop strategies to respond It should be read by all of us who wish for a peaceful and safe world ----Professor Lan Xue Dean of School of Public Policy and Management Tsinghua University ChinaCell Formation in Industrial Engineering: Theory, Algorithms and Experiments (Springer Optimization and Its Applications #79)
By Panos M. Pardalos, Boris Goldengorin, Dmitry Krushinsky. 2013
This book focuses on a development of optimal, flexible, and efficient models and algorithms for cell formation in group technology.…
Its main aim is to provide a reliable tool that can be used by managers and engineers to design manufacturing cells based on their own preferences and constraints imposed by a particular manufacturing system. This tool could potentially lower production costs by minimizing other costs in a number of areas, thereby increasing profit in a manufacturing system. In the volume, the cell formation problem is considered in a systematic and formalized way, and several models are proposed, both heuristic and exact. The models are based on general clustering problems, and are flexible enough to allow for various objectives and constraints. The authors also provide results of numerical experiments involving both artificial data from academic papers in the field and real manufacturing data to certify the appropriateness of the models proposed. The book was intended to suit the broadest possible audience, and thus all algorithmic details are given in a detailed description with multiple numerical examples and informal explanations are provided for the theoretical results. In addition to managers and industrial engineers, this book is intended for academic researchers and students. It will also be attractive to many theoreticians, since it addresses many open problems in computer science and bioinformatics.Matrix Analysis And Applications
By Xian-Da Zhang. 2017
This balanced and comprehensive study presents the theory, methods, and applications of matrix analysis in a new theoretical framework, allowing…
readers to understand second-order and higher-order matrix analysis in a completely new light. Alongside the core subjects in matrix analysis, such as singular value analysis, solving matrix equations and eigenanalysis, the author introduces new applications and perspectives that are unique to this book. As a very topical subject matter, gradient analysis and optimization plays a central role here. Also included are subspace analysis, projection analysis, and tensor analysis, topics which are often neglected in other books. Having provided a solid foundation to the subject, the author goes on to place particular emphasis on the many applications matrix analysis can have in science and engineering, making this book suitable for scientists, engineers, and graduate students alike.Calculus With Applications (Undergraduate Texts in Mathematics)
By Peter D. Lax, Maria Shea Terrell. 2014
This new edition of Lax, Burstein, and Lax's Calculus with Applications and Computing offers meaningful explanations of the important theorems…
of single variable calculus. Written with students in mathematics, the physical sciences, and engineering in mind, and revised with their help, it shows that the themes of calculation, approximation, and modeling are central to mathematics and the main ideas of single variable calculus. This edition brings the innovation of the first edition to a new generation of students. New sections in this book use simple, elementary examples to show that when applying calculus concepts to approximations of functions, uniform convergence is more natural and easier to use than point-wise convergence. As in the original, this edition includes material that is essential for students in science and engineering, including an elementary introduction to complex numbers and complex-valued functions, applications of calculus to modeling vibrations and population dynamics, and an introduction to probability and information theory.Engaged Buddhism in the West

By Noam Chomsky. 2006
This is the third edition of Chomsky's outstanding collection of essays on language and mind, first published in 2006. The…
first six chapters, originally published in the 1960s, made a groundbreaking contribution to linguistic theory. This edition complements them with an additional chapter and a new preface, bringing Chomsky's influential approach into the twenty-first century. Chapters 1-6 present Chomsky's early work on the nature and acquisition of language as a genetically endowed, biological system (Universal Grammar), through the rules and principles of which we acquire an internalized knowledge (I-language). Over the past fifty years, this framework has sparked an explosion of inquiry into a wide range of languages, and has yielded some major theoretical questions. The final chapter revisits the key issues, reviewing the 'biolinguistic' approach that has guided Chomsky's work from its origins to the present day, and raising some novel and exciting challenges for the study of language and mind. This proceedings volume is based on papers presented at the First Annual Workshop on Inverse Problems which was held in…
June 2011 at the Department of Mathematics, Chalmers University of Technology. The purpose of the workshop was to present new analytical developments and numerical methods for solutions of inverse problems. State-of-the-art and future challenges in solving inverse problems for a broad range of applications was also discussed. The contributions in this volume are reflective of these themes and will be beneficial to researchers in this area. Here's the perfect book to use when you're traveling to Spain or Latin America for business or pleasure -- or…

By Vigen Arakelian. 2018
This book presents the latest results in the field of dynamic decoupling of robot manipulators obtained in France, Russia, China…
and Austria.Manipulator dynamics can be highly coupled and nonlinear. The complicated dynamics result from varying inertia, interactions between the different joints, and nonlinear forces such as Coriolis and centrifugal forces. The dynamic decoupling of robot manipulators allows one to obtain a linear system, i.e. single-input and single output system with constant parameters. This simplifies the optimal control and accumulation of energy in manipulators. There are two ways to create the dynamically decoupled manipulators: via optimal mechanical design or control. This work emphasises mechatronic solutions. These will certainly improve the known design concepts permitting the dynamic decoupling of serial manipulators with a relatively small increase in total mass of the moving links taking into account the changing payload. For the first time such an approach has been applied on serial manipulators. Also of great interest is the dynamic decoupling control of parallel manipulators. Firstly, the dynamic model of redundant multi-axial vibration table with load has been established, and, secondly, its dynamic coupling characteristics have been analyzed. The discussed methods and applications of dynamic decoupling of robot manipulators are illustrated via CAD simulations and experimental tests.Doing Excellent Small-Scale Research

These studies…
show that neoliberal economic policies have harmed many sectors of society, weakening the state and undermining clientelistic relationships that previously provided material benefits to middle- and low-income citizens, who are then motivated to organize coalitions to work for greater social justice and equality. Recognizing this important role played by civil society organizations, Jon Shefner goes further and analyzes the variegated nature of the interests represented in these coalitions, arguing that the differences among civil society actors are at least as important as their similarities in explaining how they function and what success, or lack thereof, they have experienced. Through an ethnographic examination extending over a decade, Shefner tells the story of how a poor community on the urban fringe of Guadalajara mobilized through an organization called the Unión de Colonos Independientes (UCI) to work for economic improvement with the support of Jesuits inspired by liberation theology. Yet Mexico’s successful formal democratic transition, won with the elections in 2000, was followed by the dissolution of the coalition. Neither political access for the urban poor, nor their material well-being, has increased with democratization. The unity and even the concept of civil society has thus turned out to be an illusion.Transitions in the Early Years: Working with Children and Families

solid environments. The renewed interest in Brownian dynamics is due primarily to their key role in molecular and cellular biophysics: diffusion of ions and molecules is the driver of all life. Brownian dynamics simulations are the numerical realizations of stochastic differential equations that model the functions of biological micro devices such as protein ionic channels of biological membranes, cardiac myocytes, neuronal synapses, and many more. Stochastic differential equations are ubiquitous models in computational physics, chemistry, biophysics, computer science, communications theory, mathematical finance theory, and many other disciplines. Brownian dynamics simulations of the random motion of particles, be it molecules or stock prices, give rise to mathematical problems that neither the kinetic theory of Maxwell and Boltzmann, nor Einstein's and Langevin's theories of Brownian motion could predict. This book takes the readers on a journey that starts with the rigorous definition of mathematical Brownian motion, and ends with the explicit solution of a series of complex problems that have immediate applications. It is aimed at applied mathematicians, physicists, theoretical chemists, and physiologists who are interested in modeling, analysis, and simulation of micro devices of microbiology. The book contains exercises and worked out examples throughout.
