Lying in Bed
By Polly Samson. 2010
Do you cover up or reveal it all; seek revenge or just reassurance; let the truth be naked as the…
day or cloaked in a night-time story? The men and women of Polly Samson's debut fiction all have stories to tell, pasts to forget, futures to forge. Manipulative or meek, used or using, all are aware of the power of truth, deception and little white lies to get what they want or sometimes what they deserve. Some are concerned with the economies of speech, those little 'kindnesses' which protect our loved ones but really ourselves; some investigate the warped logic which adults serve out to children to keep them 'innocent'; all are concerned with the beds we make and the lies we tell in them. . .Flappers and Philosophers

By Bruce Coville. 2001
What is the source of our obsession with half-humans? Why do we still, in our modern technological age, find ourselves…
fascinated by mermaids and their ilk? Perhaps it is a recognition of our own divided nature. For all our wit and courage, our striving, stargazing, and philosophizing, we are still made of flesh, still have our animal nature -- and we need to remember that to live in our own skins. But we also yearn to escape our bodies' limitations. Who, watching our animal cousins, hasn't longed to be able to run like a horse, swim like a dolphin, soar like an eagle? Who wouldn't want to slip away, for a time at least, from the cares and troubles that bind us as humans and feel wild and free once more?Lord Arthur Savile's Crime and Other Stories
By Oscar Wilde.
Lord Arthur Savile's Crime and Other Stories is a collection of short semi-comic mystery stories that were written by Oscar…
Wilde and published in 1891His first attempted murder victim is his elderly Aunt Clementina, who suffers from heartburn. Pretending it is medicine, Lord Arthur gives her a capsule of poison, telling her to take it only when she has an attack of heartburn. Reading a telegram in Venice some time later, he finds that she has died and victoriously returns to London to learn that she has bequeathed him some property. Sorting through the inheritance, his future wife Sybil Merton finds the poison pill, untouched; thus Lord Arthur's aunt died from natural causes and he finds himself in need of a new victim. After some deliberation, he obtains a bomb from a jovial German, disguised as a carriage-clock, and sends it anonymously to a distant relative, the Dean of Chichester. When the bomb goes off, however, the only damage done seems like a novelty trick, and the Dean's son spends his afternoons making tiny, harmless explosions with the clock. In despair, Lord Arthur believes that his marriage plans are doomed, only to encounter the same palm-reader who had told his fortune late at night on the bank of the River Thames. Realising the best possible outcome, he pushes the man off a parapet into the river where he dies. A verdict of suicide is returned at the inquest and Lord Arthur happily goes on to marry. In a slight twist, the palmister is denounced as a fraud, leaving the moral of the story to show the power of suggestion. The story was the basis of the second part of the three-part 1943 film Flesh and Fantasy.Jamie and Brad (Éveiller Drive Ser. #4)

By Katherine Vaz. 2008
The stories in this prize-winning collection evoke a complete world, one so richly imagined and finely realized that the stories…
themselves are not so much read as experienced. The world of these stories is Portuguese-American, redolent of incense and spices, resonant with ritual and prayer, immersed in the California culture of freeway and commerce. With lyrical prose laced with vivid detail, acclaimed writer Katherine Vaz conjures a captivating blend of Old World heritage and New World culture to explore the links between families, friends, strangers, and their world. From the threat of a serial killer as the background for a young girl's first brush with death to the fallout of a modern-day visitation from the Virgin Mary; from an AIDS-stricken squatter refusing to vacate an empty Lisbon home to a mother's yearlong struggle with the death of her synesthetic daughter, these deft stories make their world ours.Girls to the Rescue: Tales of Clever, Courageous Girls from Around The World (Book #1)
