By Antonio Ferreras. 2016
This atlas offers a truly comprehensive update on the use of imaging technologies for the diagnosis and follow-up of glaucoma.…
In addition to standard automated perimetry, gonioscopy, fundus photography, and stereophotography, other advanced, high-resolution methods for imaging the eye in glaucoma are explained in detail, including ultrasound biomicroscopy, confocal scanning laser ophthalmoscopy, scanning laser polarimetry, and spectral domain optical coherence tomography. The role of the various tests and the keys to optimizing their use in clinical practice are detailed with the aid of high-quality figures in order to enable the reader to achieve the best possible performance when applying these tools. The risk of developing visual disability and blindness as a consequence of glaucoma varies widely among affected individuals. Personalized testing strategies and tailored therapeutic interventions are required to effectively reduce visual impairment due to glaucoma. Glaucoma Imaging will assist residents, researchers, and clinicians in improving their ability to understand and integrate the information obtained using traditional techniques with the reports provided by computer-assisted image instruments.Pathologic Myopia

By Helena M. Tabery. 2011
This book presents in vivo captured high-magnification images of two conditions: keratoconjunctivitis sicca (KCS, or dry eye), an extremely common…
disease of the ocular surface, and filamentary keratopathy, a relatively rare phenomenon most commonly associated with KCS. The images of KCS represent the broad spectrum of ocular surface changes seen in the condition while the images of filamentary keratopathy clearly reveal the components of the ocular surface appendices, termed filaments. The photographs show phenomena captured in various illumination modes, without staining and after staining with diagnostic dyes, and the photographic sequences illustrate their dynamics. The images reflect the in vivo situation. Once aware of the various phenomena, anyone working with standard diagnostic equipment - the slit lamp and the diagnostic dyes- will be able to detect almost all of them. The book will be invaluable for all who deal with ocular surface diseases.Orbital Tumors

By Carlos Pavesio. 2017
This book offers a concise but comprehensive overview of scleritis, with up-to-date information on all aspects, including diagnosis and treatment.…
Fundamental features of the pathogenesis of scleral inflammation are first discussed as a basis for understanding the therapeutic strategies. Detailed descriptions are then provided of clinical manifestations, the complications that can arise during the course of the disease process, and the best way to manage them. An individual chapter is devoted to infectious scleritis and its management, this being an uncommon but serious condition that may result not only in loss of vision but also in loss of the globe itself. The diagnostic approach to and various management options for scleritis are then discussed extensively, with coverage of local and systemic therapy and new strategies, including biologics. Apart from the potential impact on vision, inflammation of the sclera carries a risk of association with systemic diseases, some of which can prove fatal if not promptly recognized and managed. This book is designed to allow ophthalmologists to easily identify the condition and the signs indicative of a more severe problem. It will thereby assist in safe and effective management, and help in preserving vision and life.Hereditary Retinopathies
By Matthew Campbell, G. Jane Farrar, Lawrence C. Tam, Marian M. Humphries, Pete Humphries, Anna-Sophia Kiang, Paul F. Kenna. 2012
The hereditary retinopathy, retinitis pigmentosa (RP), which affects 1 in 3,500 people worldwide, is the most common cause of registered…
visual handicap among those of the working age in developed countries. RP is a highly variable disorder where patients may develop symptomatic visual loss in early childhood, while others may remain asymptomatic until mid-adulthood. Most cases of RP segregate in autosomal dominant, recessive or X-linked recessive modes, with approximately 41 genes being implicated in disease pathology to date (RetNet). The extensive genetic heterogeneity associated with autosomal dominant RP (adRP) is an undisputed hindrance to the development of genetically based therapeutics. The Sclera
By C. Stephen Foster, Joseph Tauber, Maite Sainz de la Maza. 2012
The Sclera is the definitive text on the diagnosis and treatment of scleral diseases, with in-depth chapters on non-infectious scleritis,…
infectious sclertitis, non-inflammatory diseases of the sclera, and systemic implications of scleral disease. Basic physiology, anatomy, and biochemistry are addressed as well. Written for the ophthalmologist, the revised and updated new edition of The Sclera contains the most current information available on newer characterizations of the composition of the sclera, immune derangements of it, and success in medical and surgical treatment of the inflammatory diseases of the sclera.Herpes zoster ophthalmicus (HZO) is a common disease in the elderly and the immunosuppressed, with potentially devastating sequelae. Diagnosis of…
HZO is clinical but almost all its manifestations are non-specific. The exception is varicella-zoster virus epithelial keratitis, which is frequently the only indicator of the true nature of the disease. This book is unique in presenting high-magnification images, obtained by non-contact in vivo photomicrography, that capture the distinctive features of varicella-zoster virus epithelial keratitis in HZO. Both the morphology and the dynamics of the corneal epithelial lesions are splendidly documented, including in patients with HZO sine herpete and recurrent disease. Three rare cases of ocular surface involvement in acute HZO are included, and the final chapter carefully compares varicella-zoster virus epithelial keratitis in HZO and the lesions of herpes simplex virus.Evaluation and Management of Blepharoptosis
By David A. Weinberg, Adam J. Cohen. 2011
Posterior Capsular Rent
By Arup Chakrabarti. 2016
This book deals with a potentially sight threatening complication - rupture of the posterior capsule - during cataract surgery. This handbook covers…
the management of this problem from 3 perspectives: 1. Identifying patients at higher risk and measures to manage such patients by surgical discipline 2. Intraoperative management of posterior capsular rupture (PCR) to minimize long-term complications 3. Post-operative care for a patient who has a PCR Cataract surgery is the most commonly performed surgical procedure in ophthalmology and despite tremendous technical and technological advancements, PCR still occurs. PCR occurs both in the hands of experienced senior surgeons and the neophyte surgeons, although with a higher frequency in the latter group. Additionally, certain types of cataracts are prone to this development. If managed properly in a timely manner the eventual outcome may be no different from that of an uncomplicated case. However, improper management may lead on to serious complications with a higher incidence of permanent visual disability. Written for experienced and not-so-experienced eye surgeons alike to understand and manage PCR.
