By Mark Twain. 1902
Christian Science is a 1907 book by the American writer Mark Twain (1835–1910). The book is a collection of essays…
Twain wrote about Christian Science, beginning with an article that was published in Cosmopolitan in 1899. Although Twain was interested in mental healing and the ideas behind Christian Science, he was hostile towards its founder, Mary Baker Eddy (1821–1910). Twain's first article about Christian Science was published in Cosmopolitan in 1899. A humorous work of fiction, it describes how he fell over a cliff while walking in Austria, breaking several bones. A Christian Science practitioner who lived nearby was sent for, but could not attend immediately and so undertook to provide an "absent healing."The Adventures Of Elizabeth In Rugen: A Virago Modern Classic (Virago Modern Classics #397)
By Elizabeth Von Arnim. 1904
In 1901 the 'real' Elizabeth holidayed on the Baltic island of Rügen with just her maid, a coachman, a carriage…
piled with luggage, and a woman friend. From such unpromising beginnings Elizabeth weaves a captivating farrago around her encounters. There's the snobbish bishop's wife and her personable, handsome son, a dressmaker and, astonishingly, a long-lost cousin -- Charlotte -- who is trying to evade the pursuit of her husband, the maddeningly genial old professor. Here, with delightfully astringent humour, Elizabeth recounts the misadventures that befall her. And, as she immortalised her Pomeranian wilderness in the famous ELIZABETH AND HER GERMAN GARDEN, she now writes enticingly of this remote and attractive island. The Tales of Edgar Allan Poe

By Anton Chekhov, Larissa Volokhonsky, Richard Pevear, Richard Nelson. 2015
"Pevear and Volokhonsky are at once scrupulous translators and vivid stylists of English."--The New YorkerThere have always been two versions…
of Chekhov's heartrending and humorous masterwork: the one with which we are all familiar, staged by Konstatine Stanislavski at the Moscow Art Theatre in 1904, and the one Chekhov had originally envisioned. Now, for the first time, both are available and published here in a single volume in translations by the renowned playwright Richard Nelson and Richard Peavar and Larissa Volokhonsky, the foremost contemporary translators of classic Russian literature. Shedding new light on this most revered play, the translators reconstructed the script Chekhov first submitted and all of the changes he made prior to rehearsal. The result is a major event in the publishing of Chekhov's canon.Richard Nelson's many plays include Rodney's Wife, Goodnight Children Everywhere, Drama Desk-nominated Franny's Way and Some Americans Abroad, Tony Award-nominated Two Shakespearean Actors and James Joyce's The Dead (with Shaun Davey), for which he won a Tony Award for Best Book of a Musical, and the critically acclaimed, searing play cycle, The Apple Family Plays.Richard Pevear and Larissa Volokhonsky have produced acclaimed translations of Leo Tolstoy, Fyodor Dostoevsky, Nikolai Gogol, Anton Chekhov, and Mikhail Bulgakov. Their translations of The Brothers Karamazov and Anna Karenina won the 1991 and 2002 PEN/Book-of-the-Month Club Translation Prizes. Pevvear, a native of Boston, and Volokhonsjky, of St. Petersburg, are married to each other and live in Paris.Shakespeare on Love
By Stephen Brennan. 2014
William Shakespeare is ubiquitous throughout the Western world as the master of the written word, and the above-quoted "Sonnet 18"…
is celebrated as one of the most exquisite love poems of all time. Love comes in all forms--friendly, familial, unrequited, and lustful--and impressively, the bard's canon works with them all. His views on love--whether they be amorous and passionate or obsessive and unsettling--are provocative to the mind and imagination. The modern reader will recognize poignant turns of phrase; though still used today, they originated from Shakespeare--known for inventing much of the modern English vocabulary. Shakespeare on Love draws from the entire Shakespeare canon: love sonnets, plays, and songs. Romeo & Juliet, Hamlet, A Midsummer Night's Dream, and countless others all have their place. In one complete volume, discover the lyrical, the funny, the lewd, and the idolatrous passages on love as composed by the most influential writer of the English language.Beloved excerpts featured in these pages include:Sonnet 43:All days are nights to see till I see thee,And nights bright days when dreams do show thee me.As You Like It:Who ever loved that loved not at first sight?Hamlet:Doubt thou the stars are fire;Doubt that the sun doth move;Doubt truth to be a liar; But never doubt I love.A Very Russian Christmas: The Greatest Russian Holiday Stories of All Time (Very Christmas)
